  • In early 2021 Mark and Caroline headed to Costa Rica in search of a gravel cycling adventure. After some of the toughest training rides they had ever done, they embarked on a challenge to ride across the country from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean in two days.
Over 270km of mixed riding through the incredible landscape of Costa Rica with 6500+m of ascent ensued with lots of drama thrown in.

Mark & Caroline, great film totally awe-inspiring. The trip looked amazing a real arduous super human effort. Can’t wait to see your next trip.

We're hopefully racing the Xtri in Nepal next (April) and the Everest Marathon. I hope to film this as well, but we're both racing so it's going to be a little more challenging.

Hi Mark and Caroline, been saving this film for a bit of cycle motivation over the festive period and you certainly delivered. Great filming and editing, really brought the whole adventure to life. I watched on the turbo, so will be revisiting to watch again and again, no doubt. Congratulations to you both.

Really enjoyed your video! What an adventure. Is the route you took available somewhere?

Amazing accomplishment and it is astonishing to me that you were able to document it in this great video. Based on your experience I would want to run a 55-65 mm tire like the Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge or Terravail Ehline 2.2 inch on a bike with a slacker HTA and more stack. In dry season would run a suspension fork and lock it out on those long climbs. A dropper post would make the descents faster and safer and Mudhugger mudguards more comfortable. I’d also go for flat pedals and shoes. But congrats for preserving through adversity and prevailing despite significant under-biking.
What time of year was your trip?

John, this was Jan/Feb. We we were limited with bike options but my road bike did well all things considered with a set of 33mm cross country tyres. We'd have certainly gone with SPD peddles and shoes next time.
