BIG Trip into Flooded River to Fish for BROWN Trout [New Zealand]

- In the first of a 3 part trip, my buddy Dean and I put on the big packs and head into the hills for a few days after some massive rain. The rivers were up and big but we have a plan that, if it works out, could see some great fishing!

The huts must be nice in the rain. We had the option of using one on a back country trip we did but since the temps were good and the skies clear, chose to sleep under the stars. But when it rains...
One local told me that many of thee rivers get "rearranged" during heavy flooding, changing channels, braids and boulders. I'd love to see some film of a non hydro release flood. Driving along the SI east coast we saw what the hydro releases do, so that gave us an idea of what he was talking about.

I am always amazed at the size of the trout found in New Zealand waters. The thing that is difficult to grasp is how they achieve the sizes they do feeding on small insects that you are fooling them with using flies. I always assumed the reason you didn't catch a lot of smaller trout is that the majority of them get eaten by the larger ones.

Have you tried "Avon skin so soft" as a sandfly deterrent. Along with a permethrin clothing spray I was rarely bothered by the buggers back in the day. Maybe 2023 we will be able to get back, fingers crossed!!

Awsumness bro.. I've just got my first Fly rod after more than 25 years spin fishing and absolutely love it.. First go got nothing just trying to learn how to cast.. 2nd go in the waipunga by Tatarakina I got 5 small ones and absolutely stoked.. I've finally seen and understand what my Fly fishing brother's were telling me about 😎👌

Really enjoyed this one. I know it’s a revisit of “this could be my favourite river” from a year or so ago. But the change in conditions and tweaking of tactics was really cool. How versatile is your dry dropper system. Have to say you’ve converted me to the poly leader too.
