I drove through the park more than a decade ago. Two things I can still remember. One is the white clay dunes/painted desert and the other is a Navajo lady chef in the cafeteria. She stayed just a little late to make sandwiches for two hungry tourists.

Great to drive through the park with you today Russ. As a photographer I wish they would open earlier so you could take pictures before the colors wash out. My favorite trail there is Crystal Forest--I think it has the most big logs to see. The Rainbow Forest Lodge at the southern end used to have an old-time soda fountain---I had one of the best chocolate malts in my life there on a hot afternoon. See ya down the road...happy trails!

WONDERFUL VIDEO !! I think you just saved me a trip West this summer ... lol ! When I was visiting Petrified Forest in 2019, a tourist was wondering aloud "what kind of chainsaws the Park Rangers were using to cut those hard stony logs" ... Those trees fell 180 million years ago and were buried very rapidly. The minerals in the soil seeped inside the wooden cells and turned them to stone but the shape of the original trees remained. Erosion then revealed them relatively recently for us to see. Now, to the White Mountains and fresh air ! RICHARD

Hey Richard, that story reminds me of a similar story it the book 'Hey Ranger." It tells of a woman looking into the Grand Canyon & remarking to a Ranger, "It's neat they put this canyon so close to the road!"

We stopped and saw the old car, drove through the Petrified Forest, Painted Desert, Meteor site, Grand Canyon, Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam and Lake Meade on our week stay out west. We had a nice time and a ton of pictures while stopping at all the various sites.

I remember back in the 60's people used to stop and pick up a bunch of the petrified wood there along side of the road there. A big NO NO back then. You
would probably get a huge fine today if they caught you doing that.
I don't know if they still do it, but they used to check people's trunks for petrified wood.

"check people's trunks for petrified wood." Nope because less than 5% of drivers on I-40 BOTHER to drive through the park and those are the ones that CARE enough not to mess with nature. In the 60s EVERY car drove through there so all the ne'er do wells would steal whatever they could.

The petrified forest was a place that was spoken about while in high school or if you took science classes in college. However, I never knew where it was located; now, I know thanks to your visit. The tree that fell across the gorge was impressive with the support of a concrete base and posts. I’d like to have seen how that was fabricated since the surrounding area was pretty rocky. Too bad that people had to take souvenirs, of the petrified wood from the park. That seems to be general trend. Thanks Russ, enjoyed this visit.

Well, this is now the 2nd of your videos I've watched since discovering your site just yesterday. Another good one! I've been to the Petrified Desert/Painted desert twice, once in the early 1980s & another time in the 1990's. The 1st time was on a road trip from Pennsylvania and then a fly rent-a-car deal. One memory that burned into my brain was the drive from New Mexico into Arizona; it seemed like driving from one scrub brush planet into a Mars-like red rock planet! On my 2nd trip, my life long friend & hiking and travel buddy found out the hard way not to pocket pebbles! Needless to say, he got busted & fined by the NP rangers. When the rangers asked me if I picked up anything I said "No, it's bad luck." They didn't bother to check me; I suppose they had glasses on us. I said after to my friend, "didn't you see the signs?" He shugged & said he thought it meant large chunks of petrified wood..haha. Anyway, another good video & I intend to gradually catch up with your older ones. Good stuff!

🤣 People have been taking remnants from the Petrified Forest for so long, it's a wonder there's anything left. My mother took several football-size pieces back in the late 50's, when I was just a little kid. I believe she still has them on display in her living room, along with other things she took from various national parks.

Back in '67, while on family vacation, we toured north eastern Arizona. While on the Navajo res, we had collected some real pretty rocks. A day or so later, we visited the park. Guess he was worried about the "under penalty of law" signs at the entrance, Dad told the ranger about our rocks, and where we found them. He told us that they were, indeed, petrified wood. He then put them into a paper sack, folded the top down and stapled it closed with a business card. On the card, he wrote "not collected in park". He then told us (mainly to us kids) to not open the bag until after we left the park!
Side note - am I the only one that noticed the lizard sunning itself on the signboard at 3:56?
