  • Common gallinule chicks look like aliens and do the funniest things at Circle B Bar Reserve and Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. This season's video montage was so much fun to collect with favorite selections of baby "chick" missteps, bickering, sibling rivalry, and parental discipline. They may be "common," but when you look at these gallinules close up they are anything but ordinary...they truly are extraordinary!

Wow! Do those babies ever have big feet! Big feet, tiny wings. Phrases come to mind- "so ugly he's cute," or "a face only a mother could love". They really are adorable. Now that water looks like there may be alligators lurking about. Thank you for the sweet sweet video! 😊🦆🦆🦆🦆🐊🐊

They certainly do have big feet! Like they always say, "they'll grow into them!" 😁 I've heard that phrase "so ugly, they're cute" often when talking about common gallinule chicks. I think it's the funny things they do that make them so endearing. Have a great weekend!

Maybe those faces and funny little wings might help keep predators away. Just kidding, interesting look though.

😁Maybe if they weren't so little they could keep predators away. If they were our size or larger I think they'd be pretty scary and intimidating. I like them this size...strange-looking, cute little roly-poly balls of downy feathers. Have a great day, Frank!

While filming, you must have been sitting still for hours in the swamp. Don't you become a victim of those monstrous giant mosquitoes «gallinipper» ( Psorophora ciliata) which, as I know, inhabit Florida?

I did spend hours watching this common gallinule family. I wear high socks and fortunately don’t get bothered much by mosquitos. However, red ants are another story. I brushed up against some vegetation on the edge of a trail to film a gator eating fish in the lake the other day and didn’t realize I was stepping in a red ant hill…ughh. I was itching for a few days afterward and have the sores remaining a week later. One time I was bitten by chiggers and the marks on my legs lasted a few weeks - very uncomfortable!
