I get around 8 hours on battery, and I can completely power down the Nvidia 1660TI when using Linux on this model (something I couldn't figure out how to do on Windows). My Legion 7 gen 7 should be arriving today, and examining the dedicated GPU (how much power it uses, if it can be manually powered down, if it automatically powers itself off when not needed (Runtime D3, or RTD3) etc etc etc...). Will also do a deep-dive into the coders the Radeon 6700m has etc... If I can get 6 hours on battery (regardless of the power draw of the Radeon 6700m), then I'll be a very happy camper.

@@kazmiee The amazing thing about the Ryzen 6000 series silicon is the rDNA integrated GPU (Radeon 680m). For an iGPU, it's amazing!! It's such a pity more OEMs don't exploit this by releasing productivity laptops with the Ryzen 7 (6000 and now 7000 series chips) without a dedicated GPU. You're a 100% right; initially with this advantage edition, I had many issues; games like uncharted kept on crashing; on Nvidia, no problem!; Older drivers on Radeon were actually performing 10-15% better in comparison to recent ones. It was all a big mess. WAS. was.. I mean. Sure, the odd bugs still tend to pop up but AMD has been constantly updating their software; every week, id see an update with big changes; and along the way, over like 8 months, I saw even worse drivers, but as it stands today; everything seems to be working absolutely awesome. amazing performance, good compatibility; even FSR has improved well thanks to Steam Deck and Ally using AMD based SOCs. I do believe AMD is constantly rising; Ray Tracing is still obviously a pain point, but honestly, it has not bothered me alot at all. :)

I've had mine a couple of months now. Overall experience is "good", with a few issues. First off, about a month in, noticed my power button had started to recess into the laptop body, leftward/down. I assume one of the screws wasn't fastened enough or thread stripped out, which prevented it being held tight and level to the piece of surrounding metal. I treat this laptop like a baby, very gentle, so 100% didn't slam the button or damage anything. It still works fine, but frustrating to have that quality control issue with a pricey laptop. Speaking of this button, I am so frustrated Lenovo decided to not allow us to dim the LED. It changes colors, and pulses and cuts off.. so it should be able to be controlled, but it isn't. This light is super distracting, especially using performance mode, with the red color. Of course you could place anything over top of it, but I shouldn't "have to" do that for a Legion 7 laptop.
I did have some initial software issues. I would lose sound when I opened windows settings, if I was watching a video, etc. The fix was ultimately re-installing the Realtek audio driver; also got rid of that additional audio software it came with just cause.
Another quirk with this laptop, is if you disable hybrid mode, the display will randomly cut off while watching CZcams, or whatever. It might go days and not do it, then it does (pretty random). It then has to be hard powered off, then it's fine. The fix is keeping it in hybrid mode, then it never does it. But.. this really shouldn't be the case.
Build wise, I've been super happy with it, excellent materials, great keyboard and all. Performance has been very good for me, as I could generally care less about the most absolute recent games. Temperatures are very manageable; I end up limiting my FPS a bit, if I happen to play a game that's slightly too demanding at 100-160 fps, to be easier on the laptop. Overall, happy with it, with exception to my power button issue.

Hey Geoff! I am so sorry for a late response to this. I had written out an elaborate response (me thinks) a few days ago and then the page refreshed and I lost it all. Anyway, I am really sorry to hear about your experience; I would hope you have raised this with Lenovo and are seeking a resolution especially for the shoddy power button, that definitely sounds bad. Did not realize that the ring light could be distracting to users. Generally I find it useful to know which mode I am in with it. All legions unfortunately do not offer a mode to turn it off completely, even the latest 6000 CAD 9i that I am currently testing these days (to my disappointment). As for the sound and random display cutting out, I have not had such issues till date at all; not sure which variant you have, is the same AMD 6700M one? Because I have primarily not had the hybrid mode on and everything is hunky dory. Like, ZERO issues. It is actually one of the best laptops I have gotten to date; so I am really surprised to hear about your experience. too many things going wrong with it; perhaps you should claim it from Lenovo and get an evaluation done from them? get a replacement maybe?

    • @GeoffiNaw
      @GeoffiNaw Před 8 měsíci

Thanks for the reply. Before I continue, I did enjoy your videos about this laptop as they gave me extra info to help make a decision to purchase it. Some other channels have all of the typical talking points, lots of "production" but lack super in-depth details/comparisons (just the same stuff parroted over and over).
Problem is, I was out of the states when the power button issue started, and I'll be gone a while. I know there are Lenovo repair centers in Vietnam, but I'm just hesitant, as the button still works and don't want to end up making something worse somehow, ha. If I was home, definitely would have contacted Lenovo. I guess I still have quite of bit of warranty period to address it.
Yeah the power buttons with an LED dot, that many of the other Lenovo laptops have, don't bother me, just the ring one. I do like the light, I just simply want to dim it in some situations, and possibly even turn it off in low light, night conditions. My frustration was, such an elaborate RGB laptop, custom lighting zones but zero control over that light.
I had read of a handful of others online experiencing the blacking out issue, was even afraid of a defective component initially, but so far I have put a good bit of hours gaming into it, in both modes hybrid/non-hybrid and have had zero crashes. It has been a stable laptop overall, just that one very specific issue I had. Just the other day, I finally jumped over to the newest AMD drivers from AMD's website directly. Everything works great so far. I will be testing it by leaving the laptop in dedicated/non-hybrid mode and see if I ever get that blacking out issue again. Yes it's the 6700M.
Luckily as I said, the strange/random issue with audio cutting out was brief and resolved with a simple driver re-installation. I really don't fault the laptop or anything for this. Overall still greatly enjoy the overall build quality, performance and user experience with this one. I'll also say the display has all of the brightness I could ever need. @@kazmiee

Personally I enjoy being able to help people find a device that works well for them. Gave to keep the spirit of PC master race alive hehe.
I DO recall though, initially when I got this laptop, I had issues with the device randomly restarting / BSOD and games crashing, I had almost returned the device but kept it just to test out how the "advantage edition" stands the test of time and I am so glad I kept it because with every driver update it kept getting better. Who knows perhaps a little reset of the base drivers might help? Hope you get a chance to visit the US again soon and get the device all fixed up.
The RGB situation, yeah is quite piss poor now, nothing has changed since Legion moved over from a corsair interface to their own. I like that we can quickly change profiles and that the setting are baked in at a bios level but in 2023, they should have updated things a bit, we don't even have layers in here, kinda sucks. But apparently, the Legion method helps save battery. But I agree, giving us control over the ring light would be nice. Thank you again for taking the time to write down your thoughts. Honestly I love the AMD system, It has treated me really really well over the past year; especially after all the driver updates they have been pushing out. It may not be able to render videos as fast as an intel equivalent; adobe software is a little friendlier towards Intel just because they are more popular, but as a heavy gamer, that 6850M would be awesome! and even with 3d design work, that extra VRAM on the 6850 (12 Gigs) + the 192 bit interface instead of the 128 bit one on the 4060 might actually come very much in handy. and that 4060 on PAPER only says 140Ws, You will RARELY see it creep over a 100W TGP; atleast that has been my experience. Apologies for the late reply! Hmmmm, as far as I understand, architectural software would bank on a blend of CPU and GPU usage. For E.g. AutoCAD, front what I have read, will tend to favor single core performance, which is where Intel will tend to take the lead. You may also be tempted to go for a larger screen as well obviously like a 17inch display; this is a 16inch one, BUT, is is a 1600P / QHD+ display; which you would appreciate when analyzing diagrams in detail. I think a 4k display would be overkilll; so no matter which device you choose, id say, stick with Intel, Nvidia, and get a 16:10 aspect screen at QHD+/1600P; also, ensure you get atlest 32gigs of ram to manage massive file sizes as well. FOR THIS SPECIFIC device though, I think it is an AWESOME machine; all your software will still work very well, and you should also get great discounts on this. great value for money; but if every processing second counts for you, Intel / Nvidia; otherwise, I love the Gen 7 Legion 7. Hands down!

Brand new?.. the same 6800H with 6700M?.. I would say yes!.. absolutely! You COULD get a lenovo Loq with a 4060 for that price which might get you close enough performance but that is jyst the end of it. You would be wayy worse off in everything else. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response ended up making my purchase. Also did you have encounter any black screens when just searching through web ? Been hearing rumors that the Amd versions have this issue.

@@tonyc77 Hey Tony. Glad to hear it! Which device did you end up purchasing? Also, yes, with the AMD version there used to be major driver issues that have been mostly resolved.. no black screens for me.. BUT..the only problem left for me is that.. if my device is unplugged and I start putting a heavy load on it..like playing a AAA game.. or sometimes even just simple video editing.. especially in balanced mode.. there is a chance that will just... restart. Plugged in though, never any issues.. and that is how I usually use it so overall I still really REALLY like my Legion 7 gen 7. :)

I ended up catching a sale on the 7i with i9-12900HX and 3080 Ti for $1,650 on the lenovo site. It has been a joy and I'm loving mine.

This wasn’t a good comparison. You chose the worst performing 3070ti and 3070 laptops to compare it to, you should’ve compared it to laptops that actually perform well like the 3070ti legion, etc.
