  • A review of the Esterbrook Estie Fountain Pen and so much more! Beautiful scenery at the beach, midcentury architecture. The question, is a resurrected brand worthy of its name? So much more!

    Love this! Esterbrook has a special place in my heart. I bought a vintage J at an auction with my Dad when I first got into the fountain pen hobby many years ago. It's a special memory I have of he and I going to auctions together. I use it once and awhile but it's got some quirks that all vintage Esties do. I've been thinking about getting a JR in a matching colour to use more regularly and am glad to hear they write well.

    Lovely video Hemingway! I’m looking forward to getting my hands on an Estie in the near future. Although the honeycomb will look very similar to my orange Conklin All American, the little gold detailing really elevates the design. I could imagine a character from an Agatha Christie novel signing a will with an Estie before getting bumped off by a scoundrel!

I was not the most caring boy and my parents had to buy a new pen quite often. Most of the time an Esterbrook. Esterbrook and Sheaffer will forever be my special sentimental favorites for many reasons. The classic vintage pens, to be sure. Sheaffer hasn’t made a great modern pen excepting the Legacy I & II. And the ‘reborn’ Esterbrook is nothing like the old, original, very distinct, varied, affordable, all-American classics that the vintage pens undoubtedly were -- and still are. In the past, I’ve rightly slammed today’s Esterbrook for cavalierly cashing in on the pedigree and nostalgia of the old Esties by slapping the name of the venerable old brand on new pens that were essentially very pretty but mere Jowo nib holders, at over-the-top prices.
    Those criticisms still hold quite true. But I have since softened my attitude somewhat by buying a modern Estie, liking it a lot, and buying two more.
    I have three oversized Esties; Ebony &
    chrome, Scarlet and Sunflower.
    I will concede the pens are excellently made and I have no regrets buying three of them. I didn’t expect them to feel so good in hand. Two of my Esties have the custom nibs (Journaler and Scribe) and one has a broad Jowo. All of them look and feel absolutely top-class. And write quite wonderfully. I also bought the M-V Nib adapter ($40)..I still think they ought to have included the adapter for free at the prices they are charging for the Esties. But the adapter affords me the opportunity to use my array of the superb Esterbrook vintage nibs I have. To be honest, as lovely looking as the Esties are, I would never have bought one if there was no nib option available other than a run-of-the-mill Jowo.
    Alas, Esterbrook has taken a harsh turn recently by ordering all retailers to charge the full MSRP for the entire line of Esterbrook’s pen models today.
    So, the standard Estie you showed here, Hemingway, now costs msrp $195 (with stock Jowo nib) instead of the already high $156 it did prior to July 1, 2022. But the Esties are eminently so popular that they continue to sell swimmingly well. The constant release of attractive new colors ensure the interest and demand are kept alive.
    An Esterbrook you should consider trying out is the Camden. I think it’s my favorite ‘reborn’ Esterbrook pen today.

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  Před rokem +2

      Thank for for the very thoughtful comment. I really appreciate it. I have shared many of your same opinions and was hesitant until I started writing with one. They really do craft a lovely pen and they are trying to provide an excellent writing experience. I agree that the Jowo nibs feel generic at times on pens, but this one writes beautifully. I don’t know if I am beguiled by how beautiful the writing experience is, but the nib feels a bit extra. I have since picked up an oversized with the Estie Flex, so you will see that on the channel soon! The big news is that Bryan Hulser of Esterbrook will be on my LIVE November 2nd, so get some questions ready for that event and we can talk about it. Thanks so much for watching!
