The Pop Tarts had just produced a demo record for Albert called "All", and Albert was presenting it for the first time to the public this night. Video by Nelson Sullivan
I can’t quite explain it but I watch these videos almost like it’s a time machine; I imagine what I was doing at the moment Nelson was filming these videos. I would’ve been 10, so yeah a little young, but I would have seen The Lost Boys during the past summer, and I try to remember what I was doing in November 1987. I remember school that year, friends and meals with family. It’s strange but these certainly help me remember the past.
They were dancing to Madonna Commotion I was about 13 and a group of friends and I saw who's that girl. That's what remember about that year. Such cool times in the 80's. Every year of the 80s seemed to have a new theme or fashion music was so diverse. Since we entered a new millenia everything seems so homogenised! For me the last 20 years have been not so memorable.
It's a Time Machine for me too! I was 16 in '87. That summer was amazing! I had my own 15 minutes of fame and was so fearless and happy then! I wish I could find that person again. In November, I was in school too, but kept busy with music and dancing besides several boyfriends that year. My art teacher planned a trip to New York in early '89. It fell through. Now I realize how much we all missed! Incredible to think about.
It was only regional fame, I did lots of television and public appearances as an ambassador for a local organization. I got to meet dignitaries from all over the world, rock & country musicians, Miss America and all kinds of cool people everywhere! When I went back to school after the summer of '87 was over, people treated me differently because I'd been on TV. Ha! I doubt many people outside of the Memphis tri-state area would remember this though (if any by this time)! The only thing that haunts me is that there is videotape out there, somewhere, people have told me but I've yet to see it, that could resurface - including one crazy Cablevision appearance, which was actually my favorite! I never know when I might find something cringe-worthy right here on good ol' YT! ;)
Wow, Baby Wants To Ride by Frankie Knuckles playing in the background. Must have been so cool living in those times during the birth phase of house music. I love it.
Yes, of course. And dancing at the end, too. Yup saw it. He was close to Nelson and lived with him so he shows up in a lot of the videos. Rupaul dressed Nelson in drag. He's in a ton of these videos. Nelson filmed RuPaul's earliest gigs. We know.
It was 1987, I was a 16 year old boy in rural Virginia, reading about these people in the nightlife section of Details magazine. I eventually made it to NY and lost my sweet mind on the dancefloors of the city. Viva la House Music!!!! Thanks, Nelson
How I wish I had filmed my friends at parties we went to. Sadly 2 of them passed in their 40s. Wish I had captured us having fun♥️ would love to hear their laughs & voices again♥️This really captures life I the 1980s Thanks 👍
Nelson and Liz were so beautiful and their friendship was absolutely authentic. Just look at the way they talk and the way she looks at him with such love and admiration as she was talking to him about his mixtapes ❤🗿
OMG thank you Nelson for this video. I used to go to the tunnel and I thought I would never see it again. One of the best clubs back in the day. Loved all the floors, all the different kinds of music and let’s not forget the parties. Thanks again
I went in 1998 while on a trip to new york.. it had just been reopened after the guiliani administration had shut it down. After my friend got kicked out for trying to buy some party "stuff", we went to Twilo.. another awesome club.. but I don't know if, like tunnel, it was around in the 80s.
I used to party with Madonna before she was famous. I know she was famous by now, but we used to have such amazing times in all the clubs. This brings back those memories!
Happy birthday Nelson. Thank you. Always so glad to see more of Liz and Nelson - and the camera just loves her. The bit where he was embarrassed and proud as she was rambling on and on about his mix tapes made me smile. Their relationship seems to true, not fake. And I love all the bits of talk we get with other people, dropping in and out. And the little vocal performance by the Pop Tatrs and whoever that woman was - great harmonies.
Even though Nelson died of a heart attack by the sores on his face at the end it’s easy to see he had AIDS it’s sad to think about how many of the people in these vids succumbed to aids. Scary time
wow, the Vendart machine @4:10 in The Tunnel ! originated here in Montreal. Could buy Village Voice for 1.50$ read Musto and listings and ads. Original Details Magazine was important. Nelsons work is priceless.
@MilesAndHeights I saw your recordings on Nelson. Thank you for doing this. This was very kind of you. I especially appreciate it. And too out of your own pocket. I'm sure the whole journey was expensive. Glad you had a safe trip to NY and back home. Hope you and your family are well. Hello from Atlanta Ga. 12.26.2023
im a 44 year old man completely dissatisfied with my sexless marriage, for some reason have been coming back to this video more and more recently and it becomes more appealing each time.
Oh my! Seriously, if you have never had bleached platinum blond hair, a light coloured faux fur jacket and fishnets whilst taking taxis to sketchy clubs? You haven’t lived! (Yes, I’ve done exactly that....the grunge 90’s...I also had to carry my heels when the blisters get too much! Having smeared red lipstick is also a must!) I’m actually kinda glad that I experienced it organically. This vid makes me grin from ear to ear... oh the memories!💋😍😋
Hi. I lived in my heels. In Chicago in winter I had my mini skirts leather coat and heels. My coat longer than my coat in 40 below too. I graduated in 1987 and went to the school where breakfast club was filmed. Maine north.
Unlike the subtitle says, this show wasn’t hosted by Pop Tarts but by my good old friend Rob Fernandez, one of the most famous NYC promoters who passed away in 2015.
Hahaha! Ru thought chick was drunk and said "have you had a couple of cocktails?" Chick's face got so serious, "I don't drink" Ru-looks at her like wtf? And says "oh? it must be the atmosphere" nope, she is just a ditzy blonde!🤣😂
Are any of these people other than ru still alive? I would love to hear from them!! I’m not a ru’s drag race watcher but I might if lahoma is ever featured :)
I feel I got shafted... insert joke here... but there's people who wished they grew up in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s..I don't think there's really anyone who says "I wish I was growing up in the 90s, 2000s, or the 10s, and really I don't blame them... Hell I think it would of been more interesting to grow up in the 1910s and 1920s even with the struggles people had at the time
I think the only people I would trust to every just save my place in line would of course be Nelson, Lehome, Dick, maybe back in the day pop tarts... Or it would just come down to anyone it seemed Nelson trusted with the exception of Christine (not that she would intentionally do anything with malice, but she unfortunately had her demons who seemed to be in the driver seat)
@@winecrimesfoodandtime7119 i hate musto. But he is true he was around way before the clubkids were a thing and wasn’t quite cut out to actually be a clubkid. Rather than just the rat in the corner making articles about the clubkids.
From seeing and reading how the 80s was depicted. I always thought no way, it must be an exaggeration. There’s no way it could have been like that. Now I’m beginning to think the stories are actually pretty close to the truth.
Feels like yesterday. It is a dose of normality in this awful world we find ourselves in where no one can hold a conversation anymore.

Luke Dodge Me too but I was there. Nothing will ever compare to these times. It was even better than the videos let on.

I was 6 when this was filmed lol. But I was in New York too. Would kill to go back to this time and be grown, and experience this.

If time travel ever happens, I want to go to this exact spot and chill with Nelson and the gang.

Way ahead of your time. The original legend
way ahead of our time^^
This looks like it was the most fun night! The alternative crowd was actually alternative in the '80s.
I used to party with Madonna before she was famous. I know she was famous by now, but we used to have such amazing times in all the clubs. This brings back those memories!
A young Rupaul before fame. Love these old school videos. Everything was so fresh and more down to earth.

Love Albert💗I hope he is doing well.
Late 80's was like no other time. Just amazing. DC, NYC, RVA. Many good times
These videos are so beautiful. They make me so emotional and a bit sad that I am starting to avoid them whenever they appear in the suggestion…..😥
Can't believe this is a young RuPaul towards the end this is a real time machine
80s music was the best.

The quality of these videos is amazing I can't get over it; even watching a professional VHS is not as clear.

"I'll pinch that wiener!" - best line ever. LOL.

awesome line 😂
Albert didn’t give a shit about anybody he said what he wanted 🤣🤣
Iconic 🙏🏻

Liz was/is a photographer so she sees.

People seemed so much cooler in the 80's, and the gay communities back then seem great.
I grew up in the 80s and everything just had more substance and people dance more at the club
Wow!! I used to hit Tunnel in the early 90s. Definitely one of the craziest clubs In the City.
I wonder if Ru Paul has ever watched these. Nelson is someone I wish I could have been friends.
I love the Pop Tarts as well
I wish there was only camera and no social media things, ppl were more in touch, and closer
Omg Madonna's song causing a commotion! Forgot all about that song
Right. She has so many good ones!
Albert was so cute....and so HUNG!
Just watched this while sitting on the balcony at the Whitney. Mixed emotions, but great footage. ❤
The lady in red gassing up nelson. Was such a vibe. She knew he have amazing potential!
Lovin' me some Albert!! Great song and sweet moves!
Baby wants to ride. The beginning of house music

Cool how Albert says “how can you distribute 4,000 invitations?” On social media of course! Crazy how back then we didn’t even think of the Internet
