11 years later but yes...that's how the market works. Remember pen drives/SSD drives? They were costly once upon a time and now they are dirt cheap. DVD players were once costly and you can get one for 15 bucks now.

Records were fun. They have a warmth to them that you just can't get in digital music. In an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, Raymond couldn't understand why his dad preferred his old jazz records over the same albums on CD. It took Raymond a while to "get it", but I knew right away:)
wow, electronics were not cheap then! I really do love your catalogue videos, and this was my favorite. Thank you for all the work you put into your channel. You've gotten me through some pretty rough nights of homework (if i can't sleep, this is the next best rejuvanative thing)
Wow, brings back memories... Equalizers, big speakers, record player, record from cassette to cassette (and from radio to cassette) and even a walkman...

In the early 80's when I was 16, I bought a pair of Bose 301's. I liked them so much that I never parted with them and actually rebuilt them 5 years ago and they sound just as impressive as the day I bought them. Always clean your records and stylus every time you play them...lol

Remember those stereo rack systems! I paid over $400 for each speaker! That system would crack the windows! Wish I still had it!

It's amazing how pricey things were back then. Just 5 years ago I bought a used record player for 20 bucks at a flea market almost identical to the one I saw in the catalog at 12:59sec in the top left hand corner for $300! I always love watching your videos, they are so unique, relaxing, and educational.

For what its worth, I bought a radio shack reciever around that same time. I hooked it up with Monster Cables to the rear speakers on the other end of the living room and ... not much sound.. A friend of mine from work took came to the house with a Sony reciever and hooked it up. Great sound all around the room. I gave him the RS reciever for helping me.

Out of all the page turning catalogue vids u do, i constantly come back 2 this 1. I lv looking at vids of old electronics, there so cool. I lv me tablet and me iPhone, but I have gr8 memories of using the Sony Walkman when I was a teen in the mid and late 80s. Opening the Walkman and slotting in the cassette then closing it. Cd walkmans was gr8 also. But the cassette walk was the best. Also I miss the Hi-fi. The one we had in my family home about 1980-82 when I was a kid of 7-8 was terrific. I recall i played shakin Stevens Green door on it, alot 😂 . Later on about 1987 my parents at Xmas upgraded and bought 4 the family a more modern system. I didn't know anything bout it till Xmas morning when it was sitting under the tree all wrapped up obviously. There was this huge present bside the tree and I knew straight away it was gonna b something cool inside. I loved the cassette doors on the system, the slow open. Later on when I was about 19 I bought myself for my bedroom a Sony mini Hi-fi with the cd unit ontop. I bought it in Dixons.

I can't tell you how much I love your videos. Many other ASMR videos (especially page turning, which is my trigger) are rushed through, and so they don't feel "real." I love how you take time and look through every page - and your soothing, avuncular voice really adds to the sensory experience. Great sound quality as well... you get me to sleep every time!
I just love how varied your interests and hobbies are. Keeps every video new and intriguing, filled with all sorts of new insights and ideas.
I imagine you'd be a very interesting person to speak with in person.

I think I remember this publication. I almost bought the 800 buck system. I mean the way it looked in that magazine, it had to sound good. I got sidetracked by someone though that directed Me to Hifi Corner where I bought a 33 watt Onkyo receiver, 2 Acosuti Phase speakers and a BIC turntable. Not to trash the Realistic gear, but I am glad I got sidetracked. This was 1977

I love that this triggers my ASMR, an then puts me to sleep within 10 minutes. That gives me three or four uses out of this video in one play-through. This is one of the best ASMR vids aroudn. I love people inspecting/explaining things quietly...subbed, and def gonna check your others out. Thank you.

Awesome video as always. I tend to watch alot of your videos at the same time and just wanted to let you know, you really help me fall asleep and i am very grateful to you.
It's interesting to see some stuff that was released before I was born. :D
My grandma has a record player that is more than 50 years old - and it still works. She forgot how to use it and I helped he out, so we enjoyed listening to a couple of records some months ago. I can't remember if the needle was ever changed since I was born, it is pretty messed up, but I enjoyed the sounds though. I always listenend to those records when I was a child. I got my first CD player very late. ;)
Just thinking about those last couple of pages and computers; it really is amazing how things have progressed. I bought my first PC in 1995, aged 30, having saved up the money after giving up smoking. I just set up a new bank account, and transferred near enough 100% of what I would have spent on smoking into it. After a while, that bought me an intel Pentium running at 75mhz, with 8mb of RAM and a 2mb graphics card. It was impressive at the time, trust me. :)
I remember those days alright. My first was a Tandy TRS-80 with like 128Kb of memory lol. Thought I was too cool for school when I got my hands on a Compaq LTE notebook with 8086 16 bit system running DOS. Used a 9600 baud modem to connect to wildcat BBS systems and thought that was the cat's meow. First windows system was a Packard Bell 60MHz pentium with 540Mb hard drive that ran version 1 of NASCAR racing rather well in DOS mode. Next system was 120MHz pentium with 32MB of Ram and 1.2Gb hard drive. People said it was waste of money to have hard drive that large as I would never need that much room lol:) Those were the days.
My parents came up to visit not long after I bought the PC I described above. They just couldn't comprehend why I would want one in my home. To them, computers were huge, possibly scary things that needed to be controlled by very serious people wearing white lab coats. Those were indeed, the days..;)

I just got my first record player and am starting to build my collection, mainly jazz and analogue electronic music. My dad helped me by giving me his own (small) collection to start. Great videos man!
I have been shopping at Radio Shack most of my life and I remember those catalogs that's when radio shack really had lots to show for today you walk into a RadioShack store and they hardly have anything like they used to before Radio Shack is not what it used to be back in the 80's the stores only carry so much the rest you have to order online I wish they still printed those catalogs now these days you go shopping for a computer there's only one or two models to choose from we're back in the 80's they had several models to choose from boy how time changes.
I would have loved an hour and a half video of all the audiophile details! The boombox part of this video made me laugh, and I think my dad would enjoy this video, i'm glad I found this. I love all of your video's, but this combines my ASMR and audio obsessions and is really "hi-fi" ;)

I just love looking back at those old catalogs they really do show how crappy the electronics age has come . we have all in ones now and they are in my opinion all in the garbage units . crosley units are a perfect example of trash electronics thank you so much for helping me to relive the past in electronics I will look for more of your great videos thank you again and happy new year
Just for the record, I would love to hear your in depth talk on audio equipment/specifications. I find people talking in depth about things especially when it's about a subject I enjoy. Such as your cigar and ink pen videos. Another great video, I can always count on your good audio quality and thorough delivery. Now, off to sleep

Sweet. My mom bought our first VCR in the mid 80s, I was about 10 years old. VHS, don't remember the brand, but it had a CORDED remote. Cord plugged in, was about 20 ft long, and had all of four buttons on the remote.

Yeah, vinyl truly has a deeper, richer sound than CDs. It's called the "loudness war". Even the way music was recorded was "better" back in the day because now they compress the crap out of it and boost the volume for some insane reason.

thank you for sharing this great vintage Radio Shack catalog I have a Radio Shack 8 track tape recording deck and it sounds amazing just like a clear cd . it all depends how well you care for a piece of electronics and that will determine the sound quality . it has never been repaired it was bought in 1979 and it works great not like the crap of today . Radio Shack was over priced on lots of things they thought that it was worth it to pay that much well people want great but not at break the bank prices that is one major reason they went belly up. I also still have a power supply that I bought for my computer from them in 1989 and it is wonderful . so radio shack was a great parts store as well as a place to get things you needed when on sale thank you for sharing this
I myself had the Realistic TR 802 8 track deck. it was a quality unit for sure. Had one of their receivers as well as a pair of large speakers but don't remember off the top of my head the model numbers.

my dad had stacks of these when i was a kid. i used to love flipping thru them, reading all the fine print... that was one of my earliest asmr triggers.. funnily enough, avon catalogs left around at work also give me the same trigger. i read all the color names, all the descriptions, and even model numbers... probably the most avid avon reader who never actually buys anything. lol. anyway, thanks for the vid. it's great.

I for one would love to hear you talk about the Watts per channel, RMS and all that other stuff. Its enjoyable to hear someone discuss the many facets of electronics that we had to be aware of back in those days. Then again I am a bit of a geek :)
Still have my Minimus 7 speakers. Use them all the time and sound just as good as they did in '82.
I have my pair of Minimus 77 that I bought around 1991 that sounded pretty good once upon a time. They are on my workbench as we speak. It seems that the woofer foam surrounds have deteriorated. I don't really want to spend $50 or $60 to replace the woofers so I am considering buying a couple of foam surround replacement kits and possibly doing a video of the replacement.
Amazingly, the $1,849.00 stereo system that models are drinking Champlain over can be had today off of eBay for around $500.00, not bad for a 35 year old system in this digital age!
Good stuff. The Radio Shack in my town closed its doors last year (2016) some time in the fall well before any Christmas deals could be purchased. Sad to see them going out of business. Looks like Sears may be next. I remember Radio Shack and Service Merchandise as well, where I could spend time (several hours) just browsing. Thanks for your video.
I live in Canada and Radio Shack closed up in Canada in 2007 most of the stores were sold to a Circuit City subsidiary called The Source, now owned by Bell Canada. Seas Canada closed up for good in January of this year, 2018. I miss both but Sears Canada fumbled the ball too much and were caught off guard by Internet shopping and providing crappy service particularly on appliances, you would go to the Sears looking for a type of appliance and they would be out of stock and they would order it but it would take weeks and most people would go to another store to buy it.
this is great. love your videos. the little comments are what matter. its crazy how the price to power ratio was so high back then. I remember my sister paying 600 dollars for a vcr from video concepts. now....I can get a blu ray player for under 100. the good old days.

I'm just now realizing just hoe much my dad shopped at Radio Shack. I picked out 5 or 6 things he had. For sure found his stereo/record player/speaker combo. We had one of the intercom systems. If memory serves me right he had the bio feedback device. We had a CB as well but not sure if it was one in this catalog. He also had the Megnetic Bulk Tape Eraser. That thing would buzz something fierce when you used it. I remember using it near a TV and thinking I ruined it permanently, that's when I found out what degaus was.
Wow, he had the battery tester and short wave radio as well.

Some of the these things I would buy for full price even today
This was a treat. In '82 I think I was in grade school and I remember the first real stereo system my mom got. I loved the tape deck that had a record level dial so I could get just the right saturation of the mix tapes I made. Amazing to think it all could have cost a grand or two in 80s money. Keep doing these man, really cool and very relaxing.

you skipped the coolest thing in the catalog. the realistic concertmate mg-1. a synth RadioShack commissioned Moog to make for them. it's a gem. it was the cheapest great synth then, and it was for many years after. just within the past couple of years the price has shot up and it goes for more than a lot of the new analog gear. more than the Odyssey or ms-20 minis that korg has put out, for instance.

1:54 - Video Disc Player. That was a CED player, not a LaserDisc. Capacitance Electronic Discs were developed by RCA, with similar theory to a record player with direct contact. 60 minutes per side, a film more than 120 min had to include a second disc. It was mostly dead by 1985. Laser Disc was popular in the 90's, finally DVD's by 2000's.

Because it was new technology, with new manufacturing techniques, and microprocessor technology in general comes down to transistor density per mm². You can put millions of transistors into a single squared millimeter these days. Back then you might've been able to fit a thousand.
