I have no curfews on my black box, just sticking to the speed. the contract is for 12 months then I get rid of the black box. and my insurance should go down cause my driving is ok :) maybe its your size engine? mine 1.2

The only thing that happen to me in the first year, was to scratch a parked car because it was parked on a tight turn. The cars were both ok and I could clean the scratches with my bare hand. What I would recommend is to always be patient while driving in the first two years of owning a driver's license. What can cause a crash is usually a lot of confidence and speeding. My only advise for new drivers is to take it slow and to drive safe.

  • @HarmonicaMustang
    @HarmonicaMustang Před 6 lety +54

Never had an accident in my first year. I had 2 understeers on a horrible bend in my area (luckily no one was coming in the opposite direction and I corrected in time) and I shocked myself into never even taking a peek at my phone (I was going 30 mph and my phone was ringing, so I wanted to check if it was from work or a friend, I looked down, looked straight up again and I was dangerously drifting to the other side of the road. I threw my phone to the passenger seat and I promised myself to never even think of looking at my phone unless completely stationary). I've only been driving for 1.5 years so I'm happy I remain accident free so far.

True! I passed my driving last year June. Got my car in end of Sep and in October got hit by a learner driver, who broke red light on junction, taking his test with examiner. My car got written off.He accepted liability but my confidence got shattered. I recently bought another car after gathering courage in one year but my insurance also went really high :( I'm still scared while driving on the roads cos of that accident which wasn't even my fault. I still think that I should take few hours lesson to raise my confidence to get back on road with kids.

I've been driving for 11 years, still not even a slight accident, it might be because roads around my town and nearby places are pretty straight forward, but we have heavy winter in canada.
Just make sure you're always focus on the driving, stop texting and space out, defensive driving is key.
Road rage? If you accidentally did something that pissed someone off,
then they're being very aggressive and seems to start harassing you,
just stay calm, take it like a mature person,
give them a sorry hand gesture, then let them go,
and you move on like usual.

My first year of driving was fantastic. Never crashed (scraped my car in a very very very tight driveway though). I lived in a small town with very narrow, very windy roads, with quite a few potholes and lots of snow in the winter. In some rain, I did some power slides in a parking lot in my ‘02 Tacoma (first car). Funny thing is, I was ‘homeschooled’ and didn’t take any driving classes except the required 8-hour class. Passed my written test first time and driving test first time. I love driving.

I started driver's training when I was 14, got my license when I was 16, and now I'm 19. I have a 2006 Ford taurus. I am super surprised nobody has ever hit me and I've never been in an accident. I've almost been rear ended multiple times and people constantly blow stop signs. There was one time where a road was crumbled on the sides and a car riding the shoulder shot up a large rock into my bumper, which did nothing except there's a tiny crack on the bottom lip. I definitely do agree though, if I was distracted I would have dozens of accidents. It sucks because teens have to pay super high insurance because it's so easy to pass the test so there's a lot of new idiots on the road. Also dash cams are super helpful, not only can you use them as evidence against a crash or road rage, but they can prevent them too. As I'm in college the stupidity I see on the roads has definitely gotten worse.

I got rear ended 4 months after getting my first car. Approaching a green light which then turned orange so i slowed down but the taxi driver behind didn’t keep the correct distance ON A WET ROAD! Medium hit to the bumper but no damage at all (was really surprised) on both cars. As soon as i got out all i see is a police van slamming on the breaks and one of them jumps out screaming it’s my fault. Said i should have just went through the lights but told him so you can get me done for running a red light?
When i explained to him that 9/10 anyone who read ends you is at fault he asked when i got my license. When he found out it was only a couple of months he started saying “you’re new driver that’s why you know your stuff” which i responded back “doesn’t matter how long I’ve had my license, I’m not some imbecile 17 year old driving.”
Then he admitted i was not at fault and went on to blame the taxi driver.
It was some experience i tell ya that.

Even after replacing most of the car, the steering wheel kept falling out, the boot had to be taped shut, the drivers' side wiper fell off on the motorway in heavy rain and the brake discs actually shattered as I approached a junction (although that was because I already had another car and didn't bother to replace the pads when they were already gone).

Best thing to do in your first year is do an advanced driving test or do some advanced driver training. Passed the Diamond in my first year and joined the Rospa in my second year. About to take the Rospa test soon. Do some driving commentaries as well always very good to pick up on hazards before they come a problem

The closest I've been to crashing is jumping my 1.1 206 over a crest and destroying a bearing. It's now sitting in the drive rotting away.

Had a crash (bumped a kerb coming out of a junction a little too fast on a snowy day): ✅
Realised my car is comically slow (struggles to get to 70mph with just me in it. Don’t stall it regularly with any number of people in it tho) ✅
Had the temptation to text while driving ❌
Giving or receiving end of road rage (both) ✅

My 1st trip in my own car was very scary, I even forgot my seatbelt lol. I also had no way to place my phone for navigation and I was in a completely new to me part of a city. Had to check navigation during traffic light stops.
Nice tips, rly. As for the 1st car, thats why I got myself 16yo Subaru Outback, that 2.5l engine has enough power to merge safely even if you misscalc a bit. Even with friends. And half the house worth of goodies))) Love that trunk. Just today I had to aggressively slow 100 km/h to 60 km/h on a highway cause some guy decided to jump into a main lane from a junction ignoring the acceleration lane and the right of way too (sorry if I mess up the terms in English). Good thing I had no trucks behind me...
About road rage and agression. It depends on country rules, but here in Russia pepper spray is the way to go. Its totally safe for both you and the opponent, yet removes any will to fight. However, don't use them against a driver while he is riding. It may cause crash.
Dashcams are a must. The ones with high angle and rear view cam.

When my first car wouldn't start because of dead battery, I tried to start it by letting it roll backwards and letting the clutch out in reverse. I didn't realize that the power brakes don't work when the engine is off so I crashed into a tree :D it was only a small bump so I wouldn't really call it a crash, however last winter I was driving on a road fully covered with snow for the first time, went too fast into a corner and flew through the oncoming lane into a pile of snow on the side of the road. If that pile wasn't there, the car would be in a tree and totaled. A kind man pulled me out of the snow and the car suffered no damage whatsoever. Learned my lesson though :D So that happened in my first year of driving

    2 things I remember,
I was picking my cousin up from school and the car park was this real steep hill, I rolled back into an 04 Corsa, the owner said it was just a banger and didn't want to claim or anything... besides, there wasn't really any damage, I just felt pretty guilty.
2, I was in a Tesco car park and forgot to put my handbrake on, on a tiny incline in front of a brand new Mercedes, wasn't really an issue until I got back in and the weight caused it to pick up speed... no collision so I didn't have to do anything but it spooked me that I could have been screwed over.
Not really in my first year, and I wouldn't call it my fault, but I checked my mirrors, indicated, go to turn left into a side street, and a motorcyclist just appears as I start to turn and his mirror hit mine... both of us a bit spooked but no claim or anything as no damage

I went into the back of a brand new 320d sport at around 5mph, maybe less on my first year of driving, luckily for me I bumped the nicest guy ever, he was more concerned of how shaken up I was rather than the little scratch on his bumper.
Sadly my insurance is now even less affordable than it was in the first place and apparently the tiny chip on his bumper cost £1700 which fucked me over when I came to renew.

(I'm from the U.S.A. so excuse any currency or speeds as the only conversions I know is 100 KMH is about 60 MPH): When I gotten my first accident (which, if you were to ask the insurance company they'd be like "what accident?" since it was so minor, I didn't actually report although looking bad I was seeking a ticket with the state the vehicle was in) I was being a little fun drifting the car when I made a turn at the same time drifting, I forgot slamming on the brakes does not help you and slammed into the curb, bent the trailing control arm. I decided to foot the bill with the assistance of my parents who I told I hit black ice and slid into the curb and only had to pay $100 out of the $200 bill. Yeah, if your going to be drifting make sure you got plenty of space so you don't drift into a curb, another car, a person, a building, or a light pole. My skills have greatly improved drifting in a better space, in fact, even though the skill seems non-sense to those who haven't ever drifted before, it does help when you suddenly lose traction and the back of the car decides to slip out since very rarely do you get to practice any slide control until you slide off the road. I've avoided an accident of sliding into a ditch and destroying both of the wheels on the car still going about 35 miles per hour by at least knowing how to control the slide, although it wouldn't have saved the ghost car that was in the lane I crossed into. Rather I just got stared at and had an embarrassing situation at hand. To all the folks out there with their new licenses. Take it easy, drive carefully, if you want to have any fun try to mitigate as much risk as possible (don't speed down the highway at 125 MPH in a 65 MPH, good way to lose your license instantly and if not, your insurance). By the way, I'm still learning as if you don't count learning how to drive with parents or instructor, I only have 10 months of solo experience, outside of that it would add up to 2.5 years. Have fun guys and keep the rubber side down.
TL;DR: I drifted my car into a curb and gotten my first accident. No insurance raise since I didn't really report the accident because of how minor it was. For future teens who decide to go drifting, do it in a parking lot with plenty of space, better to spin out and just ruin some ego than drifting into a James' Subaru WRX and disabling both your car and theirs.
