    I can totally relate Jane, I have not done a video in a while and need to get back into the swing of things, your onions are looking amazing! The ones I have sown from seed have also come on well. What a lovely surprise on Mike’s plot, a fantastic polytunnel! Just amazing, so many ideas and room to plant some exciting things!

    • @JanesGrowingGarden

      It's tricky isn't it - especially with such an odd growing year. Yes at least the onions have done well so I'll take that over the beans disaster! I'm sure the polytunnel will fill up at an alarming rate - who knows what with! Looking forward to seeing you back behind the camera. Thanks Amir x

    What a fabulous video. I’d never have thought you’d feel a bit anxious to start filming again after a little break. 🤗
    The polytunnel is amazing. I can’t believe it was all up in 5 hours. Duncan and I were still arguing over getting the base marked out square for our first 5 hours 🤣🤣
    What a fabulous space for Mike to grow in. I love the “no plan, plan” for it. Can’t wait to see how it evolves over the coming weeks and months.
    My beans were so slow to get going but are producing now. I really think the woodchip paths slowed the slugs down a bit here. My worst affected beds are bordered by grass.
    Lovely to see the growth explosion though. Everywhere is looking so productive

      Honestly it was amazing watching them put the tunnel up - Mike and I had all but divorced after we put up our other one! Yes I think the beans will be put back in the middle next year against the woodchip path - they can't do any worse! Looking forward to showing you around soon. Thanks Clare x

    Ooh, tres jealous of that gorgeous polytunnel. Given I am of a similar vintage to Mike I would def go with raised beds. I would actually have some two pallet collar deep. I have harvested precisely one tomato - a sungold. Rest are green and still have loads of flowers. Had a rubbish potato Year with most getting blight. Had a great pea year.all the best. Mags

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  Před měsícem

      I agree. The raised beds we put in by the chicken coop are doing way better than anywhere else at the moment. We need to find a cheaper source though - they are currently going for £8 each around here - that soon adds up! Glad that your peas have done well - we're starting to get a few but they are immediately eaten! Thanks Mags x

    Hi Jane, Glad you are feeling better.
    Beans and toms are doing fine, sorry. Great poly tunnel, so many options to chose from, may be looking at how you want to water either by hand or drip feed system will help with the layout.

      @JanesGrowingGarden  Před měsícem +1

      Well now that's a good point. Mike's looking at gravity watering (is that right) so it might be a combination of both. Hopefully you'll be able to see it for yourself soon! Thanks Ady x

    Wonderful video Jane, and love the polytunnel. I agree about the beans, my runners are fab but my cobra beans are so poor and I had pounds of them last year. My autumn raspberries were whoppers but all came out in July!! My tomatoes have only just got flowers! Such strange weather hasnt helped. Up here in Scotland, we've had days of rain , and even when the south has been having a heatwave it's still been cool here apart from a few warm days. Ah well....that's gardening!! Can I ask the variety of white onions you grew? Mine were so poor. Lovely to see you back x

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  Před 29 dny

      Yes it's my Cobra beans that have suffered the worst which is a shame as I love them! I keep thinking the weather this year has been a bit of a blip but time will tell - I think I'm definitely going to have to adjust some of my planting and sowing times. I can't remember the names of the first onions I showed but the giant ones are called Mammoth - all from seed. Good luck with the tomatoes! Thanks Jenny.

    So, because I'm older than you both I can say.....raise it up if you can. I had stone raised beds put in that I can sit on the edge to work. I don't regret one penny spent....I can age well with my garden because I made that choice.

It's a weird time of year as well though isn't it - the weather doesn't help! Hope you've been able to get out and enjoy some decent harvests. Thanks Tony x

    Hi Jane, im with you on the beans, ours failed miserabley this,season too. The weather has veen so unpredictable this season. Lovely poytunnel, i have 4 lined pallet collars in my polytunnel. Its 10ft x 10ft and was bought from first tunnels & yes, we paid to have it built too. I also have staging supports, recently bought awaiting for a friend to build me some wooden shelving to be attached. I love it, woman who is 61 soon to be 62 and age was in mind for me 😊 ive had mine for 2 years and love it. I grow winter lettuce, they survived last winter, spring onions too. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊

    Loving the new poly tunnel😍.
    If it’s any consolation, my tomato plants in the greenhouse also have many flowers and have had good growth. Being in the south and a few weeks ahead possibly, a few of mine started to ripen and have now been eaten. However, I think the extremely changeable weather has played havoc and my gut feeling is the pollen has been blown and stunted the plants. Many of the flowers are now drying up and falling off the plants. Luckily I’ve grown many of the suckers outdoors and they look perfectly healthy, albeit some weeks behind. I’ve also experienced botrytis/grey mould on a couple of plants too and appear to have stopped it with spraying a hydrogen peroxide mix. It’s definitely been a challenging season hasn’t it!😂

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  Před měsícem +1

      Oh now that's a thought about the pollen. I'm also thinking that it might be the bees and other pollinators have arrived later than normal - it makes you realise how dependent we are on them! Thank you.

    Yes, Tomatoes in NJ very late to fruit. We've had a record breaking heatwave from June 15th onward though, should account for it
    Great idea to use this opportunity you've been given to set yourself up to "age" wisely into gardening, Mike.
    I think I'd do a combo of some raised beds with some ground grown items in the poly tunnel. Make room in the aisle for your walker (Zimmer frame )! 😂

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  Před měsícem +1

      Yes too much heat tends to stop the growth as well - not that we'd know at the moment! I'll pass your advice about the width of the path on - he could have a rocking chair at one end for his afternoon nap as well ;) Thanks Anne x

    My beans were not great this year. The rabbits ate half of them as soon as they came up. That polytunnel looks amazing, but I wouldn't know how to grow in it. Where we live, the summers are so hot everything would just bake to a crisp. It would be handy for starting things earlier in the spring, or running the fall season later into the winter. I'm harvesting, and processing tomatoes like crazy, right now. It's not a bad situation to be in, though. We've got enough for meals for years, now, I think, lol.

    Our tomatoes grew ripe from December til May in our summer in New Zealand and I think because it was a really hot summer for us, that’s why they were ripe over the summer to autumn with huge crops. I wonder if your summer is not hot enough? We get between 20 and 35 degrees Celsius for most of the summer.

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  Před měsícem

      I think it's probably the quality of light as much as anything, even on warmer days the light has been quite poor. I'm just hoping that we get some in before blight arrives! Thank you.
