A Year ago, I made a little DSi style FPS 3D game called Stop the Tropi-Choppa in Unity for a game jam. I spent 10 months remaking and improving upon the game in Godot. This devlog is the story of the game development related troubles I faced along the way.

The story telling in this is incredible
Hi AIA
"The feeling that I can do something is, nothing, compared to the feeling that I have done something." Wow, powerful. This is helped me get a little but more motivated to create myself. Great video
Yo man congratulations. The "Sticking with a game beyond the initial spurt of inspiration" is very relatable. It's the reason I often stop a new hobby I've been doing after a week or two. I hope you'll continue making gamedev vids! They're very entertaining
ADHD gang
I love the DS/3DS Era so much! This game is so cool!
I would really love more to this cause the concept is great and would watch. 24/7 if this was a series keep up the work :)
Its been a long journey and it was very cool to watch the game grow and even change engine, thanks for the devlongs :D
I really love this game concept! I'm glad you were able to finish it, the enemies are actually pretty creative!
This channel is one of those where I’m like yeah this is definitely gonna blow up if it keeps going the way it’s going. The kind where I binge all the content and then come back to the channel to see if you’ve made any more. Great job dude
I really enjoyed watching this! It's inspiring to see how you stuck with it and found a way to stay interested
This is one of the best devlogs I’ve ever seen. Looking forward to your future games!
I love that you kept on and made an awesome game in the end, I love the style :)
This has gave me the motivation I need to start my book again thank you so much
I really like your game it’s interesting and sounds fun I think this is a good foundation for any future game that will take longer than any game jam (I’m not a game dev at all)
this is poggers, I am learning Godot as well XD good job with your game!
I'm glad that I've found this video... I was _burned out_ with my project, but your story helped me to refresh my will and take over the challenge once again :)...
This is really impressive. I think you have a bright future ahead of you.
I love the style of the game , and you should be proud of finishing the project . Congratulations!!
I cried and i really dont know why , maybe the fact that i feel stuck with my own game development , maybe the fact i feel i am faking it or the whatever , that doesnt matter , I i am thankful for this video and for you to do such a thing , amazing job random guy on the internet!
This is great man
Awesome job
Thank you man for sharing this stuff
just found this now, this video was incredibly well put together and amazingly produced. fantastic stuff sir. downloaded and played through the game too. it is now in the hands of my 5 year old little brother who is addicted to new soup ds. hes lovin it lmao.
It's very motivating to hear you struggling with the engine - I know, sounds weird, but I come from unity and learned Unreal for the last few months. Mainly environment stuff like creating master materials, how blueprints work and overall performance stuff for large game environments, besides all the 3D stuff.
I wanted to dive deep now with Unreal since I have one month of free time and create my own game - isometric top down - and thought I might be prepared for the task, since I know some coding and gameplay implementation from unity - and struggled for two days to learn how to even move an actor with a mouse click!
Great video and inspiring to keep at it, we all can make it (implement motivational workout music)!
This journey is very telling, thank you for sharing
This channel deserves WAAAAY more subs!
Your videos are very motivating!!!
Congrats for your finished game :D It must be a quite journey.
Been really enjoying these videos, and just realized I wasn't subscribed yet! Keep it up, this was a very well put together video
This is a really good video. I think I'll go back to working on my game.
I really like this game's art style. Btw, I feel your pain of living with school and game dev at the same time. This video is really fun to watch btw
very inspirational, thank you for sharing!
Very insightful video! I've wanted to begin gamedev for a while and this gave me a little more inspiration to maybe finally start on what I dream of doing. :)
Congrats on the release! This is an inspiring story. Not only do I feel more motivated now to get more games made and released, but I also feel like I should probably go and refactor my code.
I love this video! it's incredibly inspiring. I've been making games on and off for over 10 years now and I've never finished a single game! I set myself a goal at the start of the year that I wanted to release a finished game this year, regardless of how good or long it was. So far I have the basic mechanics down, and then I needed to come up with a story and art and thats where I've left it for the last 3 weeks, I haven't touched it. I think this is the inspiration I needed to load up my godot project again.
Looks awesome!
Great video, been inspired to make art like this since I seen it, just wish I had your skills
Great video!
For my first serious game project I decided to do the same as you did (rewrite the code with all the knowledge I acquired since the beginning) but ended up putting it on ice because it was way too big of a job! Hahaha Started my second game project and it's coming along pretty well. I am curious to see your next project!
Man. You just gave me inspiration to go back to working on my book
Gotta say that was inspiring, i just released my first game for a game jam, and just like you said was it the best, no but well i completed it
wow. thank you for the amazing video
I've gotten quite bored of the game dev youtube space in recent years, but your videos are a fresh take on everything and really enjoyable... Also game looks great!
great job man!
Great video! I love your stupid rootbeer rhyme. Great mix of personal humor/insight and story telling.
I'll keep a lot of this in mind when I eventually make my own 3D project, to get familiar with the engine through some other project before jumping into the one I've dreamed of.
Also, those are some based level inspirations.
Bro you should have wayyy more subs your video was amazing!
This is such an incredible video
First video I've seen of yours I've seen and its great! I think I may do something similar as, despite the massive amount of time I've put into game dev, all I've ever done with what I've learned is make tutorials and I've never actually published a game.
Sheesh this looks great!
aw this is really something man pat yourself on the back. theres so much character and love poured into this, really cheers you're gonna go far.
I like how you listed all your ideas in a text file, the exact same way I've been doing it lol
Holy crap this is an amazing channel
Great video, thank you
I love the style of this game and the graphics reminds me of the old days
So, are you staying with Godot? Also, a large part of my first 100 hours with Godot was trying to figure out Raycasting. 😄
I'm actually editing a video about the experience right now. While I'm making it, I started wondering, "Are people actually going to sit through a ~20 minute video about game development?” Heh, but that's what I just did right now. While taking a break to eat lunch, I watched this video. It was nice. 🙂
well are you?
@@carsextendedwarranty I like Godot. I'm currently trying to build the “Hedging” game with it. The software is impressive. So much so, that I have to move up the 3D artwork / animation piece of the project. While I don't know exactly how much time and effort is required for the development side, I feel confident that I can finish the game with Godot. That's when I had to stop and wonder - can I actually make the art for the game? 😄
Sorry, second comment I’m leaving here but I just gotta say I just found your channel a few days ago with your godot for 100 hours challenge and I love it! I really like your humor and overall quality. You definitely earned a new sub! Great videos man!
Dude, that outro hit me hard
i love the look of your game
i love the ds inspired style! i kinda want to work on my own ds style game maybe even try out godot for this
Half crying, half screaming, half searching for solution on StackOverflow, half screaming in happiness when something works, half breaking your game
DS graphics are sooo underrated, maybe it's just the nostalgia, but I absolutely it and this game looks exactly like it could've been a DS game
I am kinda late but Great job dude I am so happy for you
Someone sent me this, and this is adding on to my motivation of wanting to make a DS game. Thank you
looks authentic :)
this is the best character arc
The art direction is so incredible! such a unique yet familiar style!
this is incredible
I’ve been making a game for awhile, and I finished it a bit ago, and I just haven’t uploaded it yet. I should do that sometime soon.
Good video
It's nice to see someone else struggle with their own human limitations. Sometimes I forget I'm not alone out there when it comes to struggling to finish projects or getting burnt out.
I love watching your videos, they are so well executed and you are very well spoken, how much time do you take to edit these?
This feels so relatable to my first finished game
Wow bootiful and inspirational storu
*story
Omg I remember playing this when I made a game for the same game jam!
Damn I feel this, especially the ending I’ve released of 30+ game jam games but I personally don’t view that as a release titled. Even after releasing 4 games on android /apple I still can’t finish my projects too. One thing that was holding me back was my morality of copying. Wanting to be so different and trying too hard. Taking a step back and just creating. I’ve released 3 games now in 8 months and i feel so much better and confidence is at an all time high. I urge others to not try so hard and start small
Hey! i recognize your name from the VR Jam! you made the Platforming Volcano game! Great to see you on my home page haha
Actually love the low polygons and mild textures of the DS era.
If you want to give multipe enemies a simmilar behavior I'd recomend using custom resources. They are easy to set up and can be swaped in and out like Legos and and are great at preventing dry code. Pefeper has a great short video on them.
This is awesome
idk if people care but my problem with making games is that when ever i make a project and develop it for couple weeks, i just lose motivation and that is the reason i rarely do games even tho i would want, the feeling of losing motivation isn't good.
I have a similar problem where i lose interest for a genre of game super fast. So if i start making a platformer, 2 months from now i will want to make a boomer shooter or something. So i just end up with 20 prototypes. Its annoying.
People Care. I suggest making a really simply game that takes 2-4 weeks to complete, and that comes from somebody who spend 5 years on a game XD but I would often stop when I encountered a problem that was too big or difficult for me, causing me to loose motivation, we just need to keep it simple.
Time to rewatch this every time when I feel like quitting.
Rewatch #1
this should have way more views
i wish u kept VR support lol this looks like itd be fun af in VR
You should make a video or a playlist with the resourses that helped you with the journey to learn godot
W video as always bro
Any resources anyone could recommend to learn how to model and texture 3d levels like seen here?
Congrats ofn finnish a big project! Which I have done many things in my 27 years on this Earth... completed a game is not one of them... Yes I have 7K videos people enjory to watch and learn from, I have self published a novel, I make pixel art that people enjoy to look at on Devainart and I have made a Comunity around shared vaules... But I never completed a game... I have 3 I am working on the first is the bigest and is almost half way done, the 2nd is just waiting on final art and playtesting, and the 3rd is not a Table top game but a video game made in RPG maker so still not on your level... Thanks for this it's really inspering to see some one younger then me do someone I am chuging away on.
Mike, you da bomb.
It's nice to see someone documenting their active learning rather than an experienced professional talking about how they struggled at first.
Very paradoxal game, not lazy at all after clicking so many times
Well done champ 👍
Could I recommend a simple development cycle for indie games?
1: Concept and vision, maybe something like a design document. Figure out a time budget for the demo, make bullet lists;
2: Grey-box the core mechanics with coding the first version of the play systems (this will be rewritten a couple of times regardless of how well you think you do it, just code it rough and hacky);
3: Work out application systems(menu options, save/load, maybe multiplayer, maybe ad integration) - make these as self-contained and general as possible as they should be reusable for your other games down the line. Or maybe use community systems if available and more robust, but your own will sometimes be more efficient to work with;
4: Demo/Vertical Slice : you get to work on 2d art, models, animations and sound for one level. Play test. Rework the game systems if necessary. Get it to a reasonable amount of polish if it has the smallest chance to become a commercial project. Get it out there and step away;
5: Figure out if you want to push it further, you're at the stage when you can approximate what it takes to finish the full game. Don't be afraid to completely re-think it or scrap it. What you coded and even some of the assets should be useful for a next game project. If it still seems promising, go to step 6.
6: Actual development starts here. You are most probably going to need to redo everything better - start with the design document and a time/resource estimate for the final game. You might be able to get some funding at this stage and pay for some of the development.
Dam you blew up
W
SOO COOL
criminally underrated
Fucking awesome bro
I know im a year late but you just go recommended to me. i use godot, so i know mw my way around it a bit. you overcomplicated the bird enemy. the easier route would have to have a raycast on the bird and extend downwards. check if it hits the pinapple, then if it does have an animation play of the bomb falling or have a physics body off the bomb spawn at the birds location. either way, have it do damge to the pineapple. in the check for the raycast colliding with the pineapple, have the birds rotation point go up. heres the code for this:
var Bird = $birdpath
var Raycast = $raypath
var Bomb = $bombpath
func _process(delta):
if Raycast.is_colliding():
var target = Raycast.get_collider()
if target.is_in_group("pineapple"):
Bird.rotate_x(5.0)
var Bombspawn = Bomb.instantiate()
Bird.add_child(Bombspawn)
target.health -= 25
again i know this is a year old but just letting you know
goodjob!
I now want to make a ds style game except I have no clue how to code
Super teacher
This game, really does sell the vibe of being a ds game. It really looks like a ds fps running on an emulator with higher resolution.
Cool.
The oranguclang sounds like a psi-zombie from the STALKER series. Good job. lol
wake up babe, lazy alarm uploaded a new video!
