  • Dana White talks with Vivek Ramaswamy about the fight business. White explains that boxing follows a "going out of business sale" financial model, meaning that there is limited leftover money to be re-invested after fighters and expenses have been paid. He explains how this can be a problem for boxing fans, who are often the ones hurt by sport politics.

Boxing is obviously the better sport to be a top athlete in. HOWEVER... Fighters having superior leverage makes exciting match-ups happen less often. While I want fighters to be paid... also want competitive and timely bouts.

that's not because of fighters leverage. And the fact you hint at that is awful to do. Thats because of corrupt sanctioning bodies and promoters. If the ufc continue going the way they do with pay. They will lose their belts due to congress threatening to put bills in like the Ali acts etc in the sport. getting a fair share shouldn't have anything to do with leverage.

He's fought while having undiagnosed Lyme Disease, once he started getting treatment, his performances improved and he has been a pioneer, as well as a good professional representation of what an honest, hard working, mixed martial artist should be. TKO does and, before that, it belonged to WME and Zuffa. Ownership has final authority on payouts and they're going to base it on how much an individual fighter brings into the company-- hence the payouts that Conor and Jon Jones mentioned and why most of the guys in the company get much less comparatively.
And Say what you want about boxing, but guys like Canelo and Floyd who are responsible for some of the biggest PPV sales in history (their fight alone outsold every single UFC event history by a significant margin, UFC 229 notwithstanding) are also going to make big money because of it. The UFC is literally the lowest paying (percentage wise) sports company there is. Fighters are "independent contractors" yet aren't allowed to fight for other promotions or do boxing just so that he doesn't have to provide health care, among other benefits. TJ (there are countless examples we know of, even more that we don't) fought with a hurt arm not only because it might've been his last title shot but also because that's the only way the UFC provides healthcare. The first contract a UFC fighter gets makes him less than 10k a year if he gets to fight 3 times which is kind of unrealistic since with that kind of income from the UFC you probably have to get a day job on top. This is the same Dana White who despises Randy Couture for wanting a better fight contract and who left the UFC to fight in another MMA Organization for better payment.
Randy helped put the UFC on the map as a legitimate combat sport.
And Dana used to praise Randy….until Randy wanted to get paid like a high level athletic champion.
