  • In this video we are going to take a peak inside of three separate high school Chemistry curriculums at three different price points! This video is coming from the perspective of someone who took 3 years of high school science and 2 science classes in college, but has a social science background.
‪@Arleneandcompany‬ is a CZcamsr with a science background, and I am sure will be coming out with additional high school science curriculum information. She already has several videos where she discusses different curriculums and online interfaces! I recommend heading over there for her additional perspective!
In this video, we will take a look at:
    (1) CK12 Chemistry Intermediate and Elemental Science's support materials and links, which can be found here (extremely low cost or FREE for books):
    elementalscience.com/collecti...
    www.ck12.org/book/ck-12-chemi...
I'll show you the textbook, the teacher text book, and the tests and quizzes.
After filming I was thinking that you may be able to access quizzes and things by going to the CK12 main page and clicking on chemistry, versus going straight to the "flex text." I would try and investigate that before publishing, but we are having a major bandwidth problem at the moment!
    (2) Focus On High School Chemistry Set ($145 for new books):
    www.homesciencetools.com/prod...
We look at the textbook, the teacher manual, and the lab guide.
    (3) Oak Meadow Chemistry Matters ($315 for new books):
    www.oakmeadowbookstore.com/ch...
We take a look at the textbook, the course book, and the lab manual.
I saw that the teacher manual for this edition is currently for sale on clearance. So if you are interested in using this edition and want to get the teacher manual, that is still an option!
If you are curious to know more about why RS4K is not considered secular by some, here are some links for further information. The beauty of homeschooling is that each family can do their own research and reach their own conclusions.
"Does Real Science-4-Kids have a Christian or secular worldview? All of the books introduce real science to students and this means scientific facts and theories that are currently accepted by the scientific community. However, the books also introduce students to the philosophy of science and encourage students to explore opposing viewpoints when it comes to interpreting what these facts and theories may mean to individuals, groups, and the larger community."

Ty for sharing! You know what team I’m in 😂 But I have the current edition of OM science. Not sure how much has changed. I’ll be sharing our OM HS course soon ish, but I’m definitely not looking forward to chemistry…from anyone 🤣 Chem brings me bad memories.

    Okay,first of all great video.
I’ve never even looked at Focus On Science before.
So my 15yo said that Oakmeadow was a lot of reading and not enough experiments.
Focus On she liked the color in the book and looks very approachable, especially if a high schooler didn’t like science she would go with this one. That it looked easy enough.
Elemental Science she liked that it looked challenging enough and that she could choose a schedule. The CK12 added was a bonus. Has plenty experiments.
She would go with Elemental Science.
I think Elemental Science has more flexibility. I like the memory work in ES and that it does look like it will be a bit more challenging then Focus On.
On the other hand Focus On looks like it would be somewhat fun and looks pretty open and go.
Oakmeadow Chemistry reminds to much of a high school textbook for some reason. I didn’t care for it.
    Looks to wordy and difficult😆

Thank you so much for this video!! It was really helpful and would love to know what you ended up choosing later on and what worked and didn’t work for you.

Oh good, I’m glad it was helpful! I will definitely post an update. As of right now I am leaning towards CK12 online, but I will likely have my daughter look more closely at the options and see what she’s inclined towards. She’s currently doing a program where you read from the text and watch recorded lectures, so that mix of book and online seems to work well for her.

Such a great video. Every now and then I like to watch videos for Middle School and High school. We've always used Real Science but from just a quick glance I had had the impression that the HS Chemistry seemed so much lighter than most other curricula for that age.. but I think it looks good for someone like myself who is so intimidated by Chemistry. I have been thinking that I will probably use Sassafras with my daughter later on but I am really liking the Memory work that Elemental Science uses throughout their programs. I love the flexibility with structure that we have with Curiosity Chronicles and I have been thinking love to have something like that for Science. However, my son loves RS4K and does not want anything else. So, we'll see for my daughter.

Thanks for watching! I agree about it seeming less in depth but also more approachable. 🤔
