Imo David did it. He was “the chosen one” by his unwell mother. He didn’t appear to have any motivation for his own life. He wanted to be in control of everything. He could easily then blame his mother’s mental illness and get all family insurance.
Honestly poor Robin, it seems like he was just trying to support his family.
As someone who has lived in Dunedin my entire life and can clearly remember this murder happening, I fully believe David did this. And if he did, his sentence was an absolute joke. 5 lives for barely more than a decade, WTAF. Our justice system sucks!
I totally agree! I have always thought he did it and this solidified my thoughts. Free man and money gets to live his life with a wife and kid. Our justice system is a joke and this was a complete botched investigation. Why the heck did they burn the house down 2 weeks later. Mind blowing.
Agreed. I'm from NZ too. He did it, so many things were just not right. Disgusting. And he's got a family now. Convinced a man he was innocent & he got him released. Major manipulator.
New Zealand is a small place, one of my primary school teachers was one of the two that worked with Robin in Dunedin. Thank you for covering this case, it means a lot to us kiwis! A couple of other great nz cases are the Lundy family murders and the Olivia Hope and Ben Smart murders
@@MizzTrinieFyreit’s such a sad case. The daughter was so little :((
The Lundy's lived around the corner from my house and I went to school with Amber. I was a year younger but i still remember the day i went to school and there were tv cameras everywhere. I walked past her teacher sitting outside her classroom bawling their eyes out because theyd just been told. We had an assembly to tell the students she had passed away. It was such a weird thing.
As long as she doesn’t be the next person to do the bloody Crewe murders!
It’s crazy the amount of people who believe in his innocence that he was eventually released and paid compensation! It really had people divided on whether he did it or not but it’s too circumstantial to not be him let’s be honest. Knowing that he’s out living a fairly cushy life is so weird, except he is a pretty distinct looking person so it’s not like he would be able to blend in. I hope wherever he is people give him side eye
The issue is that because there is all that technology nowadays if we can't prove without doubt, it becomes a problem. Justice is not justice today despite all the progress.
I remember laughing at people who thought he was innocent back in the 1990s and hitting them with facts and watching their mental gymnastics or try and deny them. Basically their argument usually boiled down to the fact that he wore glasses and looked like a nerd, this he didn’t seem like a familicidal killer, about the stupidest argument ever. Did meek old Robin look like one either?
Oh no. This woman sounds severly narcissistic and later psychotic. Hoarding is a trauma symptom. She obviously had some mental issues. There's a genetic aspect to narcissism so I wouldn't be surprised that David seems to have inherited it. Robin was probably a normal guy / possibly quite insecure which is why he was susceptible to be sucked into this kind of manipulative relationship. Their family life sounds like a nightmare for everyone involved.
@@princesaa__ Research says otherwise..But Research is really just percentages 🤷♀️
I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I say: WE ARE OKAY WITH AN EXTRA LONG VIDEO. I love hour long or more true crime videos. I wanna hear EVERYTHING. This is why we are true crime consumers. We want it all. We love you and want lots of you 🫶🏻🫶🏻
To whoever is reading this keep going, you're doing fine! No matter how slow your progress, each new week is filled with tiny steps forward. Be proud of yourself you got this! ❤
You gave so much more context to this case than in the other videos I've watched on it. Thank you!
i actually interpreted the suicide note to be david apologizing to his mother for killing her, saying “you were the only one who deserved to stay.” while it doubles as a cover for him to pin his dad for the murders, i feel like there might have been a personal message behind it. maybe he only killed his mother so he could set up his dad and get away with murdering him/the rest of the family members?
I think he said that because he’s a narcissist and wanted people to think he was so much better than the rest of his family, and a good person so he’s the only one who deserved to live. And also to make himself appear like a good person to police to help him get away with it. Just my thoughts!
I know someone who knew his lawyer and David had to stay with them for a bit. The lawyer’s wife and children were so scared of him. They used to catch him watching them while they slept. The lawyer’s wife told the lawyer that if he didn’t get rid of him then she would leave with the kids.
That sounds like made up fiction.
David never stayed with his trial lawyer. And his retrial lawyer was Joe Karam.
Got so much info here that I haven’t heard from others. Clearly this was worth the wait! This is a very thorough description without making any of the details confusing. Love your videos so much, Bella!
Thank you so much for covering this case, I’m one of the people that has been requesting this case for the longest time (sorry!) because it’s such a crazy case that I found hasn’t been spoken about much outside of New Zealand. Growing up in NZ I always thought it was Robin but as I got older and really looked at the evidence, I now believe it was David. I can’t wait for part 2!
Wow. The mom reminds me of Lori Vallow. Very scary! It amazes me that in their “past lives” they are never anyone ordinary. One’s a goddess and the other was Winston Churchill’s wife. Just crazy.
One of my uni friends dad was one of the crown lawyers! 100 percent David did it!
I firmly believe that David committed the murders. He was his mother’s “chosen one.” But regardless, this is heartbreaking case. I hope that the Bain family is resting in peace. 💗
yay my home town! always wanted a big channel to cover this story thanks you bella
David looking very guilty imo.
Hi Bella!!!❤❤ I would love it if you looked into the burari family deaths that occurred in india a few years ago. It is hands down one of the most bizarre and dark cases we've come across in India. There's even a Netflix show based on it. It is a twisted and an unsolved tale....
Yes indeed it's one of the most bizarre cases heard. I personally feel cases that are not as known should be looked into as the famous ones already have a lot of videos or content made on incase we want to know about it.
Hi Bella! I just wanted to tell you that I really love you and your videos. The way you talk about these cases makes them even more interesting, and your dog Mia is adorable! I'm really happy for you. Moving to a new country is the beginning of a big adventure. I hope you enjoy it to the fullest!
And, if it's okay, could you please cover these cases from India:
- Geeta and Sanjay Chopra kidnapping case
- The Nirbhaya Case
- The Tandoor Murder Case
Sending lots of love to you and your family ❤️
thank you for covering this bella!! its so good to see this finally covered by a bigger true crime creator!! i grew up in dunedin hearing my family always talking about it, my theory has always been that robin killed his family then david came home, went into a blind rage and killed robin after realizing his family was dead.
To anyone who is wondering, yes, driving past the land where the house was is indeed, really really airy and creepy!!!
Here's a point everyone seems to have missed: When David Bain was first charged with the murders he entered "no plea". You would think if he had not committed the murders (which he clearly did) HE MIGHT HAVE SAID SO.
Yup I remember telling people who thought he was innocent that back in the 1990s. They would usually say: “Oh he was still in shock” or “oh he thought the case against him was so out there”. Yeah right.
Then I would tell them about the washing machine cycle, Stephen’s blood on his shorts, the bloody footprint, the fact Robin had a full bladder, that Robin’s body had clearly been moved, that there were no contact powder burns where the bullet entered Robins skull, and how it was almost impossible for Robin to have shot himself from that angle. Their mental gymnastics when faced with it all still makes me laugh remembering now. Their argument usually boiled down to: “oh he wears glasses and seems nerdy and like a nice guy”, about the weakest argument possible.
the family member possession thing reminds me of lori vallow
Omg please do more NZ cases!!! My friends and I have been wanting you to do one forever, thank you so much 🫶🫶🫶
i’m so glad you posted. i’ve watched every single one of your mystery mondays 😭
The notification that you posted 3 min ago just made my day!!! Thank you for being the most amazing, talented, incredible true crime content creator ever. I’ve been watching you since 2017 and have seen every single one of your videos😋 you’re the best
This case reminds me of the Amityville murders here in America... The son definitely did it!
Here in Punta Gorda Florida USA… waiting for hurricane Idalia. Thanks for another great story to take my mind off the rain and wind outside !!!
You did a great job telling this story!
Timed it well now I'm having dinner watching part one and two...blessed.
David: “They’re all dead hurry up.”
Operator: “It’s alright…”
This is my first time watching your videos, in about two years. I've been watching you since the very beginning. Your channel has grown, exponentially! Also, your camera quality is just amazing, now. Its so clear & HD. I cant wait to see you go even further. I am SO proud of you, Bells ❤❤❤❤
Kiwi here, thanks for covering this case!!
I'm getting "little prince syndrome" from David
I went to Otago University, which is in Dunedin, and there is a David Bain drinking game. Wearing your ugliest sweater, you take shot in every room then run around the block, and first one to bring home a paper wins
I have this cozy, ugly sweater and without fail every time I wear it my boyfriend will be like “ok David Bain” 😑
@@chiinyecerezo_ Chill out FFS. It’s not like we know the people involved personally.
Part 2???? Nauuuurrr🤧💔
You're awesome Bella
YASSS! I’m from NZ & have requested in the comments that you cover this case, i didn’t realise it had been highly requested & FOR A HOT MINUTE i thought you were dedicating this video to specifically me 🤣🤣🫣
Love YOUUUU BELLA 👸💞
Have you already covered the case of:
MALCOM NADEN?
It would be awesome for you to cover this case since it’s a Australian case.
I am from Dunedin and this was a massive and controversial case and verdict!
I was just thinking about watching one of your videos and then this popped up! I've never been this early!
Bella your skin looks amazing in the video, you look sooo happy (when not covering the case, obviously) it’s always nice to wake up to one of your videos ❤ lots of love
I am looking at part 1 before two. I don't want to miss a thing.
Oosh been waiting for this! Thank you Bella for all you do 😊
No one ever tells the same story with this case. I’m so confused. I have never wanted to do my own research before like I do with this one!
Hi Bella! Thank you once again for such an informative video! I was wondering, have you done a video on Jill Meagher? I searched your channel but I don't think you have, please correct me if I am wrong. Also when the case is resolved, it would be amazing to have a video on the mushroom poisoning deaths/attempted murder (allegedly) that are currently being investigated in Melbourne AUS. Love your work xxx
You’re my favorite content creator everrrrrrr 💜 I am so excited to listen to this story even though I’ve heard it 800 times you’re the best at telling stories hahaha
Yay Do As many parts As Needed its A Lot of info
Thanks so much for covering a kiwi case!!!
i'm so happy this turned out to be a 2 parter actually, i need to know more!
Hi Bella!!! So excited to see you are doing this one and I eagerly watched part 2. I have always thought he did it and now I'm 100% sure he did. Mind blowing how botched this investigation was. David should be in jail for the rest of his life!!!!!
OH my Days Better I've seen this case Glad your covering it
I’ve been waiting for this one!!
Ma'am, how could you leave us hanging?
The whole case is sad when a son kills the whole family, that's just horrible. The whole burning of the house makes no sense, at least till after a conviction.
Any time I see one of these stories and only one family member survived…they did it 😬
Yeah. Reddest flag ever. It's always the one who survived unless someone survived cause they weren't present.
Aaah saving my wednesday morning with a new upload!!
I love your makeup, it is so clean and pretty and fresh! I’d love a tutorial of the look, or to know what products you use ! :) Xx
I have lived in Dunedin for 3 years, never heard of this case and having this video on in the background and hearing "dunedin" completely threw me wow
i remember this when i was a kid. got scared when i saw how many bains were in the phone book.
After Part 1, I can't see how the murderer could have been anyone else but David based on overwhelming evidence against him. Will watch Part 2 to see if my thoughts change.
I was just thinking of your channel and boom new video.
Hi Bella! Love your channel. I'm writing this on 9/2/23; it's the anniversary of the unsolved case of Gail Matthew's, 23 & her 5 year old daughter Tamara Berkheiser. It was committed in 1994 in Williamsport, PA. One of the suspects dated my friend back in 94. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks. Keep up the amazing work you do!!
Hey Bella, hope you’re having a wonderful week! I definitely am now that you’ve posted ❤
Hi Bella Hope you're doing well i've never been this early! I'm looking forward to this
Thank you giirl for your efforts your videos make my days ❤️
pls put these into podcasts😊
the mother and father, wow, I do not even recognize them as they aged. They aged so poorly. Very odd family. "who was the most possessed" oh no, sounds like Lori Vallow Daybell.
Love how he got KFC when he got out of prison 😅😂
Not the cliffhanger 😮💨😩
Yess asked for years I love u doing this please keep nz in ur options more often please ❤
There’s no way David didn’t do it !!!
30 miles [50 kilometers] commute is nothing in the US. i used to commute up to several hours, living in rural towns and working or going to school in the city.
This case happened about a 3 min drive away from where I grew up
i was just watching one of ur old videos!!!😍😍😍😍
Thanks much Bella ! PLEASE LOOK INTO IRON CANNON CASE AKRON OHIO !!!!
I’m thinking it was David. If it was the dad I believe he would have done it when David was home also.
I think David did it but if he was the favorite why did he kill his mom? So no one else could speak out against him?
I don't think he was very attached to his mum / cared if she lived or died. What I find interesting was when Bella mentioned that Maragret had the family members assessed by a psychologist and the psychologist attested David with worrying little empathy (aka psychopath). Also, often the ones who request assessments of their close ones, have great issues themselves and are just projecting. So personally, I think the mother had big issues as well as David, both on the BPD / NPD spectrum. Hoarding is also a telling symptom of severe early trauma. I think, David seized an opportunity to get rid of his family and "become free". And his family members dying for that was a sacrifice he was willing to make. Even the ones he didn't mind. Did in such a clumsy way, makes me think, he's either not very smart or the murders weren't premeditated a long time ahead.
Police stuffed this case. With the glasses. Came out that the police moved the glasses.
Love a Bella video!!❤
i love the way you pronounce “drawings”
something about that message on the computer makes me believe that Margaret planned this out. “you are the only one who deserved to stay..” sounds like something margaret would say to david, since he was her favourite. It makes me think that Margaret must have gotten David to do all this and in the end NOT kill himself because she loved him the most. hence, the message on the computer. considering all the mental health issues these people had, it could be very much of a possibility :(
yayy u finally did a nz case! I love this case its so interesting
Thank you!
Off topic but where is your bedding from?
I am surprised that not more people are aghast at the very destructive role that Margaret has played in the Bain family.
When i knew her in PNG her youngest son (Steven) was the same age as my eldest son. Margaret had a happy but forceful personality. She was very talkative and I remember her smiles. The family was "alternative" and Margaret was always exploring things. She told me that she mainly lived at night. Robert was very quiet, I remember him leading the singing at a campfire with his guitar. He did that very well. I also remember him giving Margaret a shoulder massage, when I was at their home. They both cared very much for their children.
How sad to read what became of the family!
I think that Margaret opened herself up to some strange forces when she was dabbling in traditional healing in PNG. When that happens there is only a downward spiral.
Her life became more and more dysfunctional. She was very entitled and controlling, letting everyone else do the work. There was always conflict around her and she was rigid in her thinking. She had a favourite child (David) and Robin became her victim. Does this ring any bells? Robin stayed and kept on providing for the family, but he became a shell of a man, belittled, empty, depressed and destroyed.
As many of you I have had to deal with a person similar to Margaret in my life. Get away, however hard it is, don't become like Robin!
You should cover the case of Bonnie and Clyde
the ranking of the family members and the obsessed spirituality sounds like lori and chad daybell
why ON EARTH and WHO in their right mind decides to burn down an entire home that IS a murder scene so soon after the murders- that’s like sabotaging the case on purpose
Hello Bella. I miss the funny earrings. Just curious why you are not wearing them for your videos anymore.
Margaret sounds soooooo much like Lori Daybell Vallow
Waiting for for part 2
Missing you bella!
Thank you for saying Dunedin correctly !!
I can't wait! i'm SO interested!!!
I've never been able to get used to our Bella talking only about nightmarish crimes. With pleasure, I remember a wonderful video of her cooking meat. I love her, so I would like to suggest that she (of course, if she doesn't mind) made a blog about her life in England.🥰
The week is always great when you post !! 🫶🏾
Was there ever any theories around the mother being possessed or having had voodoo placed on her from their time in PNG . I have read about traditional voodoo practices in PNG very interesting !
If she was gullible and superstitious enough to believe in that stuff, then she could very well have convinced herself that she was able to “see” the devil. She clearly made her family’s life exceedingly stressful and disfunctional. Such a sad story.
She was clearly mentally ill, maybe suffering from schizophrenia. She was a hoarder so had probably had some trauma in her early life as well. If her family had sought medical help for her years before then things might not have turned out like this.
Left with a cliff hanger! How dare you Bella! lol ❤😂❤
I was watching you while getting ready waiting for you to post😭🩷
Wow I've never been this early!! I love your videos!!
The poor dad seems to have lived an abused life with his wife
