- The Haiboxing (HBX) 16890sa is the newest and most updated version of one of the most durable and best known RCs of the budget RC world.
Besides the size of the battery tray, the biggest complaint I've heard on these is that they aren't fast enough. The requests have been answered and this model can accommodate a 3S Lipo! Still just as durable as before but with even better looks!

I have the older version of this car and has gone up to 57 mph on an upgraded motor and ESC…. And it also did 34 mph on a 3s (stock - but it was pushing that ESC to its limit). A lot of fun for sure!

Yes the older models could kind of handle 3s. Mainly because that little red brick esc was death proof lol. I still would get little weird glitches when I tried it, but if I feathered the throttle, it worked ok. This new one is actually designed for it, that’s the only real difference lol
@@DerbyCityRC I would get the same glitches and have to ease into mine as well! When I ran much larger tires, I could not use it at all on 3S because it would create a higher amp draw and literally be like you jammed a stick in the gears when you demanded too much from the ESC… The car would come to a screaming halt!
I did it once with medium tires and it worked pretty well actually lol.

Is there a way to add speed control to this one? Bought it for my 5 year old and I to share…but without speed control don’t think it makes much sense. Thanks
Crazy enough I don’t think there is. I tried binding it to an older hbx remote that does have speed control and it didn’t work. It bound but the car didn’t know what to do and throttle was completely wacked out. Seems like an oversight on their end. If you like this car, the most similar one with a speed control remote would be the 16890a with the yellow body. Looks like a pretty good price with an extra coupon right now: amzn.to/3RIXpu3

I like the 2997a more. It’s bigger and has the center diff. More controllable and almost just as durable

@liamrobinson1890 I’ve never tried, but probably wouldn’t be too hard to find one that works. Since it has the center diff, it helps keep it from pulling wheelies like I showed in that video. That’s why it doesn’t come with one.

Awesome video! The 3S HBX rips. I love that it has a Hobbywing esc. Did you try hooking up a program card to see if any settings can be changed? Those are great shocks too. I put those same ones on my original Hyper Go to replace the crappy ones it came with. The one thing I wish HBX would do is put the servo on the other side and mount the esc on top of it like MJX does. That way we could have a bigger battery tray.

You can program it. Come with the hobbywing manual and you can program with the set button if you don't have a card. Pretty slick!

This is the 3s I used, but it’s not a perfect fit. Usually strap it to the upper plastic brace or put a block of foam in the battery tray and lay the battery on top of that and the servo and strap it with two Velcro straps or one longer one.amzn.to/4a3BdDh

I have the 16890a....I ran it on 3s a lot. I wore out the gears. Hopefully this version has better gears. Might get that version at some point.
No it’s got the same gears. These have very good gears in them actually. Of course with enough heavy driving they can still wear or break.
I have broken a spur gear once when on 3s with an older model, but I think just the once.

Love your vids! I've picked up a 16890SA for my son and a 2997A for myself! Do you know what kind of diffs those come with? Are they sealed and take diff fluid, or are they not sealed and take grease? Any difference between the 16890SA and 2997A in that regard (sealed vs. unsealed diffs)? Thanks!

Thanks! It’s extremely similar to the older 16890 and the 16889a models. It’s basically the same. The rear upper control arms are different on the 16890’s than they are on the 16889’s

I also think it’s one of the best and I’ve got Tekno, Arrma, Losi, Serpent, Kyosho, Redcat, Team Redcat, MUGEN, Hpi, and so on! Let’s hope it doesn’t Disappoint on 3S. Oh, and I bought another Redcat MT10 😢😂. I also got a ton of parts coming and I’ll have 2 now. The new one I’m gonna keep at stock height and add sway bars as well as the aluminum front and back skid plates and aluminum servo saver. Center diff and Mount should be ordered soon as well. I’d love to see how you feel about raising the stock height by moving the shocks over on the A arms! That’s how I set it up after the 3rd run and was much more happy. A lot of bashers moved to the harder red springs so that’s another option at stock height but Redcat told me moving to 60wt shock oil with the stock springs is ideal so I’m gonna try that at some point with stock, soft, and hard springs… 😂

@@DerbyCityRC I’m going through depression man… Anxiety, fear, anger and a sense of hopelessness. I feel lost and I’m so worried all the time! I feel this is something that we need to talk about more in the RC community! I mean, I know I’ll be OK and the separation anxiety will hopefully one day fade away, but in the meantime I guess I’m just gonna be like the rest of us and wrench, and play, and decide which RC’s are the most important in my fleet and work on my time management skills. It’s just all I can do right now while dealing with this feeling of loss and hopelessness that the REDCAT MT10E is gonna one day be a fleeting and elusive dream! 😊 😂 😢 Remembering the 1st time I saw it back in 2018, and how I debated about buying it for the Next 3 years while my Arrma, Serpent, Losi, Tekno, and Mugen fleet kept growing…. Until 1 day I realized how much I loved my Kaiju and my Dukono and how silly I was for the blatant disregard for this fine machine! Then in the Summer of 2021 that all changed when it arrived at my door step. Skate Park here we come! With a raise of the arms one notch my life forever changed when I found the 1 RC tougher than the Arrma Granite and Tekno MT410. 😢 😂

The Arrma 4s is awesome. I had the OG 4s Outcast which is the real v1 from 2019 and it was my 1st Arrma I didn’t like so as soon as the Kaiju dropped in 2019 I sold the Outcast. I don’t have either updated 4s Outcast but I’ve ran the V1 and it’s awesome! You should love it. And although I’m a MT guy for sure the 4s Mohave looks amazing to me. I’m also a bit surprised you don’t have a Kaiju! It’s wicked fast stock, and all I remember it needing is one metal upgrade and then you can widen it and it handles amazing with a tough body. Stock wheels are great too!
Hey, great video as usual. Question: would you buy this truck over the Hypergo H16BM on 3s? I love my old HBX and want to get another truck thats just as good but faster.
Definitely this one. The 1/16 scale hypergos aren’t as durable. The 1/14 HyperGos are a little better but I feel more comfortable with this one.
You still prefer the 16890sa over the 1:14 MJX 14210 or the upgraded H14BM?
I purchased a couple of 16889a pro's after watching your videos. Having a lot of fun with them. Unfortunately we stripped the spur gear (the end cog that connects to the differential). Is that a common problem? What causes that? Just ordered the SA version here - looking forward to that.
Awesome! No that’s not a common issue that I’ve ever heard of! Finally after two years I broke a couple teeth off my spur gear when I had oversized tires on it for most of its life and ran it on 3s when it happened. So who knows it most likely won’t ever happen again lol

How does this compare to the 2997a? Im pretty much decided one one of the two. Im also slightly confused what exactly the differences are between all the models but eh 160 ish for one of these two is great.
Sorry for the late reply. I definitely prefer the 2997a. It’s quite a bit bigger, faster, easier to control, has the center differential and nearly just as durable.

I would choose the 2997a. Bigger, faster, handles much better, close to the same durability.
So I just pick one of these up for my brother to get into rc fun but I have noticed that the brake suck on it when full throttle then I brake it take like 2 to 3 ft to stop it and most of the time I hit at wall or a object

It’s possible the throttle trim is turned too far forward. Could try turning it slightly counter clockwise. Hopefully that does it!
Man i used to have nitro rc's and your videos have inspired me to get my first electric. Im either going to get the 16890sa or the hyper go. Which do you reccommend?
I’d get this hbx over any 1/16 HyperGo. Probably still over the 1/14 scales too. These are just so durable. However if you want to go slightly bigger, check out my video on the hbx 2997a. That one has a center differential and is also built extremely well.
Get this and the 2997a or the newer Rlallo cf and will be happy with any or all imho .

I’ve don’t it on my original 16890 and on my 16889a pro. It works but was always a little glitchy. Had to feather the throttle or it would cut out.
Ya it works on the older models but can be glitchy. This new esc handles it a bit better lol. Wish they added a center diff lol

Could you please check if this new separated esc and receiver work with the standard brushless 2s transmittor/remote? i am planning to buy on amazon the combo new esc and receiver to upgrade my 2s pro in order to run it on 3s batteries
They don’t unfortunately. I’ve tried already and due to the old remotes having a speed knob and the new ones having a throttle trim knob instead, it did not run correctly.
@@DerbyCityRC its a shame...because on amazon they dont include the transmitter in the bundle so it is useless for me...have to find a bundle with esc, receiver and transmitter that fits the chassis and runs on 3s

It’s so similar it might as well be. The rear upper control arms are different, but if you find them, you can even get the 16889a pro arms if you ever break one. I haven’t. This is probably the best of all of them due to the better esc. Only thing about it is, you can’t turn down the speed. Kind of weird and had to be an oversight but it’s stuck at full speed besides just controlling the trigger. Full throttle is full throttle.

I really want bigger tires on it, as it will help some with ground clearance (and looks), I just don’t want to stress the motor or drivetrain. @kendallwilliams8135 I’m not sure if the gearing is different, but I actually put the tires from my 901a on my 18859a a long time ago and it was fine, so I’d say do it!
Possible you may need some small hex extenders to keep them from rubbing the body, but maybe not. The bigger the tires the more strain on the drivetrain but these gears are tough!
I think I’ll go for it. Parts are pretty cheap, so why not, haha. I saw that video; those tires looked sweet if it’s the one you’re talking about (reinforcing the bodies). I appreciate you, sir.

Of course they’d have another version and slightly cheaper a month after I got the 16890a 😂 Is the ESC the main difference? I love mine so far. It has taken quite a beating too!

They’re the same other than the esc. The SA model is actually rated for 3s. The A model will take it and work ok, but it’s not really supposed to lol
So I can try the 3S battery you recommend on the A-model… but you wouldn’t recommend it? I just ordered the 3S battery in your video for the SA… but have you tried it on the A? Just don’t want to blow it up! :D. PS: love your channel! @@DerbyCityRC
@steviev2504 correct lol. It would likely be ok but they’re not rated for it lol. I did it in my old 16890 from 2 years ago and my 16889a pro. Basically the same electronics. It can be a bit glitchy but never caused a malfunction. I didn’t do it very often though.

To me the SA would be worth it. Better ESC, paddle tires, better looking body in my opinion. Only issue is you can’t turn a knob to slow it down. You can control it with the trigger of course but you can’t lower the top speed with a knob like you can on the “older” models like the 16889a. Hopefully that helps!

Well those upgrades are pretty much all already on the 16890A and the SA so you shouldn’t need those (if I’m right on what you’re talking about)
You really don’t need both of those, I’d choose one of them, the 89a, 90a or 90sa, and then for your next car get something different. Those three are all pretty similar.

Yes this is new. I don’t have the previous version but it wasn’t supposed to be 3s capable, though some say it works.
This one is actually designed that way.
Only other difference I believe is the body color. This is the 16890SA, older model was just the 16890A lol

I don’t really get that on these unless I put bigger tires in them. It could certainly happen though. I actually need to find a better servo for one of my upgraded 16889, but haven’t really looked yet unfortunately.

Yup! They’re very different cars, this one just doesn’t have as fast of a motor

What is the largest wheels I can fit on the 16890SA without having to re-gear? The S3 battery makes it so fast. Lol

I’ve used these on the original 16890 and loved them. Heats the motor up a bit quicker though, so be careful. amzn.to/3IFliyS
