A Better 12-volt Diesel Heater In A Box?

- So, here's my take on building a portable 12-volt diesel heater in a box. I know there are plenty of other similar videos out there, but I incorporated a number of good ideas from some of them to build mine.
I built this one primarily to heat my Frabil Predator ice fishing pop-over that I have been modifying to use as a sleeper shanty. Check out the initial build on my channel and watch for an updated video where I show the additions and further mods to use as a pretty comfy sleeper shanty. However, the very compact size and portability of this heater build makes it great for use in any winter or cold weather camping anywhere including use with a roof-top tent when overlanding or a ground tent for posh glamping setups.
Major credit and kudos to John McK 47 who has a fantastic series of CZcams videos on his channel that walks you through all you need to know about these units. All of the problems others have mentioned having with their diesel heater builds would have been avoided if they first watched all of John's great videos.

Glad I found this video! I use those Plano boxes for most of my gear and this will make everything stack neatly together. I'll try to make a metal box for the inside (but that's just me). Also, If I can find aluminum flanges instead of the plastic ones, I 'd be happier too. I am sure the plastic ones hold up to the heat well enough but I can be a little rough on things. Nice job.

Great job. Muffler needs to slope for drainage and the hole in the muffler housing needs to be down also

Thanks for taking the time post this, really nice all in one build. Have you had any issues with the plastic heat exhaust flanges melting? One of the flange reviews indicates they had that problem.

Your build is one of the best ones I've seen on YT to date. I have two questions though. 1) Could you have made the outlet air end 4 inch like the inlet end and why didn't you do it that way. 2) Could you please list any additional parts you used and where you sourced them and size of your box. And lastly just for the record at this time there are only two sizes of these particular heaters available for sale. A 2 Kw and 5Kw and John does go over this in one of his video's and explains the differences. Again very nice build should give you years of service and keep you nice and toasty while fishing!
The main reason in keeping the air effluent the same size was to ensure the air coming out maintained the max flow pressure and resulting velocity. Bigger vent would have the same volume of air coming through but the pressure and velocity would drop a little. I wanted to ensure the air coming into the ice fishing tent was able to reach near the opposite side before dissipating to help avoid it being colder on that side....which is where I sleep....basically making sure warm air made it to the sleeping side.
Everything I purchased was on Amazon except the box which is the small Plano Sportsman Storage Trunk (24x12x15) available all over the place.
@@hardh2ofishin857 I did not consider the pressure/volume ratio your absolutely correct! I'll be heating an 8.5 X 18 cargo trailer camper. I do want to go with a bigger storage box so I can use a bigger fuel tank.

I think a metal box would work better (plastic can be brittle and melts dealing with higher temps) I would go that route if used outside for ice fishing or camping.
The Plano boxes don't get brittle and nothing hot touches the box to melt it.

I would add a fuel shut off valve that way if you suddenly loose power it won't fry the ECU.

I've noticed you didn't provide any ventilation for the box. How hot does it get inside with lid closed?
You could take the intake filter and put it on directly onto bottom of the heater intake. Just provide some ventilation.
Hcalory came out with pre installed heater in a case. Some what flimsey.
I think I'll use Ridgid tool case for mine.
Yeah, I had planned to redo the combustion air intake to be inside the box with just a vent installed on the side of the box....but to be honest it has been running perfectly so it is low on the priority list. I would like to eleominate the need to plug that intake filter on when setting up. The heat inside is actually minimal...like just above body heat range.
Awesome video. I am planning on doing the exact same thing in a Ridgid Pro 2.0 medium tool box. The part that has me stumped is the different rigid fuel line kits out there. The most recommended kit I have seen seems to have 2 different sizes of tubing, one 4mm OD and one 5mm OD. I am not sure why you would need 2 different sizes when the ID is the same. This would also require different sized connecting rubber tubes. What kit or list of parts did you use? Also, what fuel filter? Thanks.
Didn't have to get a separate kit..I made sure the heater that I purchased came with the rigid fuel line already. Fuel filter came with it as well.

The simplest way is to buy one of the portable all-in-one heaters - which will by definition have everything you will need. You're only throwing away the metal casing.
The tank in this video is from one of the 'squat' portable heaters. There is another type of tank (more like a long rectangle, square section) - & this will be found in the 'tall' all-in-one heaters.
Only caveat is, do buy a fuel filter, as many of the all-in-ones seem to omit this.
I say 'buy an all-in-one' as opposed to a normal separate-pieces heater, because for this project, you're concerned with the fuel tank shape. The normal heaters come with really large tanks, which wouldn't work so well for a project like this.

I've also had issued using the 12v cigarette plug for power. What did you use to run it off your jackery? Could you include a link to what you bought?
I have an old (2014) Apple Server Tower that would have made an EXCELLENT case for the heater...go rid it 2 months ago :(

See the another video on my channel of the field test. No issues and currently wouldn't change a thing. I do run an air hose to recirculate the air and so I usually only need to run on setting 2 or 3.

Take a look at the box I put together.
Make sure your Jackery is capable of 150w output in DC as the startup is approximately 130w with the glow plug and shutdown about 100w..
Once started, power draw is from 6-40w.
IMO, given tents are generally not insulated, recirculating the air is not necessary.
The mufflers don't really quiet it down much of any..
My field test camping on the ice yielded different results (see the field test video). The Jackery worked great. I noticed a difference adding the second muffler...not a lot..but noticeable. Really liking the unit and glad I built it. Will post another updated field test video after I run it with the recirculation setup and see how much I can drop the fuel and power consumption.
What gauge wire does the controller need? Like to run it 10 to 15 feet.
Good luck with that noisy thing, you do understand that the more noise you make on the ice, less fish your going to catch. Setting that thing on the ice next to your tent is no different then running a noisy generator but it's your tent would just stick to the silent buddy heater.
Note: the sound captured on the build video is intensified due to the camera. With the lid on, and the added sound dampening I added, the heater itself is super quiet. You'll see in the field test video that you can't even hear it anymore. Had no problem catching trout, burbot, and Perch everything I used it.

Yep no issues. The outer edge that touches the plastic box barely gets warm.

any reason you chose this specific diesel heater over another?
Jackery 500 has had no problems. I bought a foldimg 100watt solar panel from Amazon that has no problem recharging the Jackery during the day even with limited sunlight.
You may not notice the sounds but the fish are gonna hear the vibrations through the ice good luck with that.
People run generators for their fish houses and dont have a problem scaring fish. Just saying
How did you mount the box under the heater to the Plano box?
4 pan-head screws up through the bottom of Plano box and into plywood box. Placed them in the molded recesses of the plano box so the don't hit/scratch any surfaces.

Did the jackery power this ok? I have the same heater and it shuts down my Ecoflow Delta during powerup. Its pulling about 138watts. I ran mine full power for about 13 hours and used 9liters of diesel.
Yep...no issues using the Jackery. Have used it 7 times now camping on the ice with no issues at all. Usually only run it at about 50% and it burns about 3 to 3.5 liters over about 12 hrs.

Do you have a add-on parts list? Also how are the plastic hose flanges holding up? I want to do the same thing but was worried about them melting on the output side.
The flanges are holding up fine. I got them on Amazon and they are designed/marketed specifically for heating/AC applications. No melting.

No...I just freehand something close to the dimensions of the heater itself. I connected the hoses using the hose clamps that it came with per the heater installation instructions.
How did you attach the air inlet for combustion to the container?
@@The1KMnO4 I fashioned a pass through using standard PVC couplers glued to each other through the hole I drilled in the box. A 3/4 inch male threaded PVC coupler fits perfectly with just a little sanding in the inlet air tube that came with the heater and then I glued a 1" to 3/4inch adapter/coupler onto it through the hole in the box. The 1" opening on that adapter is the perfect size to attach with a friction fit to the inlet filter when setting it up.
I’m looking to get a 2 or 3kw all in one unit. Do you think it could run the night on a Jackery 240?

What's a good way to get the hot air into a truck canopy. I assume you have to drill a big hole for the ducting but is there some sort of port that seals up when not in use?

Why not just buy an All In One heater already set up in a box for about the same price as just the heater

The heat comes out at about 180 degrees your going to cook inside that tent this is not a heater for a small tent ! Trust me it’s waaaaaaayyyy over kill
Why don’t you buy the already build in a box Chinese diesel heater? They are the same price.
A couple of reasons.. #1 Wanted a larger fuel tank. #2 The pre-made ones often come with the cheaper fuel lines (you want the thinner diameter hard lines not the softer green lines). #3 Assembling myself allowed me to get to know the unit better. #4 Satisfaction in building it myself.
