- Learn how to grow sprouting broccoli with this easy to follow video tutorial from Quickcrop with expert veg grower Klaus Laitenberger. The word broccoli means 'little sprouts' in Italian. It is part of the Cabbage family of vegetables which also includes cauliflower, cabbages, Brussels sprouts, turnips and many of the Asian greens. The words 'broccoli' and 'calabrese' are different varieties of the same vegetable. In general terms, Calabrese produces green heads whereas broccoli produces purple or white heads. The most common in the UK and Ireland is 'calabrese' which annoyingly, is sold in some of the super markets as 'broccoli'

Absolutely adore your backdrop of the mountain and the ducks waddling in the distance Klaus.... You lucky thing! Love the video too
Cabbage root fly was my nemesis but some wood ash sprinkled soon stopped them and after a couple of years they haven’t come back! Great video.
I really like this video. It was informative and it took me from planting to harvest in a few minutes. Thank you.
Glad it helped, best of luck with this years veggie crops
I always come back every year to remind myself how to grow my Purple Sprouting Broccoli ! thanks and please do more ! :) x
Great video leds
Ooh good one - it's only 7 years later, but i've just put my 12 healthy sprouting broccoli homegrown seedlings out under netting in Australia. Due to the covid lockdown in Australia I was delayed, so got them out in late spring. They've all gone in along with all my other brassicas. They're my favourite family of veggies. I've got kohlrabi, purple sprouting broccoli, red cabbages, green cabbages and swedes. YUM 🥦🥬
i went and saw them today - they're all flopped over - healthy but wonky. my red cabbages, green cabbages and kohlrabi are going well, as is the purple sb, but it's falling over..
Best gardening site on the net, thank you.
i love sprouting broccoli, i am growing green, purple and white sprouting broccoli! such a long growing season but so worth it when they produce in the Hungary gap
Surely you mean the hungry gap. Hungary is a country in Europe. They may have a few gaps, who knows!
@@ChrisJohnson-pd4hh lol that's autocorrect helping out again lol
Are the plants supposed to have a oil like film coming off them when u water them??
I also noticed that during the beetroot video you only mention borax as a cure to boron deficiency but ive noticed that glacial rock dust supplies enough boron for beets to thrive and not get scaby.
Hi, I have the small heads formed and look like they might open soon on green sprouting broccoli. Should I harvest these now to prevent going to seed and encourage more heads? Not sure on the right time to do this. Thanks.
Hi and thank you for the video. Is the sprout broccoli perennial plant ?
thank you 😊,Kalli Eastbourne East Sussex
I've ready to plant my first early purple sprouting broccoli how many plants would you recommend as I have plenty to put out. We have a family of 6.
Can you please tell me what zone climate you are in
Thanks for the upload, very interesting. I live in South America where the Spring and Summer months are constantly over 110 degrees, will broccoli and cabbage be ok under shade cloth?
Steam the shredded leaves, eat wity virgin olive oil and sea salt
You should do a video on brussels sprouts and cauliflower, We could use the information.
What kind is that
My first time growing tenderstem broccoli. It was growing great but all of sudden covered by caterpillars! I pinched some leaves and threw away. I don't know if there will be harvest
Hello Mr., if chickens eat broccoli at germination, will it still be good? Or
very informative, thanks!
Thank you.
Hi are you in the UK and if yes, are you in the North, South? I am in London and wonder if we have similar time/months

My plant leafs have started going purple, how do I get rid of the cabbage root fly?
Actually it’s just the stems
Couldn't quite catch the name of the sprouting broccoli, was it santae ? And where might I get it.. love your down to earth informative videos.

@@debbiepierce3928 Thank you
Hey, in my garden where I planted, there are thousands of snails that eat up everything I grow. I have tried to get rid of them in many different ways but nothing works. I wonder if you have tips on how I can get rid of slugs?
We have a blog article on the subject. Good luck! www.quickcrop.co.uk/blog/natural-slug-control-25-non-toxic-methods/
get ducks
Smunch them and crunch them
will there be any new videos added to this channel ?
Yes, what would you like to see?
well i haven't seen all the content on your channel yet but I really like it and it's very informative. Have you done herbs or pumpkin and squash yet? Anything you're planting at the moment would be interesting I'm sure :)
Do brassicas, especially broccoli and cauliflower, suffer from early/late blight? Thanks for all your help. Is spraying with a pesticide that kills the cabbage root fly sufficient to ensure a healthy development of brassicas?
Very informative. I like you videos. Can you give me the brand name of the chicken and seaweed pellet mix? Thank you!
Melody
Thanks Melody, Its called Seafeed. www.quickcrop.co.uk/product/seafeed-natural-seaweed-extract-poultry-manure-fertilizer
Ooooohhhh What a GREAT DAY WITH LOTS OF BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS by looking at This PRECIOUS Video!!!!💎💎💎💎💐🌺I am looking at the fat fat ducks!!! behind these GREAT 2 men. Well to tell you the truths!!!! This is why I am starting 3 years ago 8 hens that gave me eggs abd poultry manure!!!!
Thanks QuickCrop
Should I put a fleece over the young plants when they have been put outdoors?
Yes do, particularly if frosts are expected.
@@tonykerrigan5869 Thank you!
Good advice.
7th months from seed until harvest.its long time,
are these the same seeds I can grow sprouts with. Don't want the full plant, just sprouts.
Hi Tim, Brussels Sprouts are a completely different plant but they are are grown the same way. We have a guide here
www.quickcrop.co.uk/learning/plant/brussels-sprouts
I think Tim means seeds for sprouting in a seed sprouter on your window sill! Not Brussels sprouts.
Great video!but it wld've been better letting us novice's know at which MONTH.at each stage was, example, for spring crop, summer crop, winter crop, when to sew each crop and when to harvest, being a novice I don't understand how a winter crop of broccoli grows in cold weather?sound a bit thick???
We do have extensive growing tutorials on our website, there's so much information that it can't all be put into a 3 minute video.
www.quickcrop.co.uk/learning/plants
As for the winter varieties, not all plants need summer sun to survive. Many brassicas have a long growing period reaching into the winter. They make slow progress throught the winter months and spring back to life in ermm.. spring.
We are putting together a new filming schedule and would appreciate any ideas for new videos. Cheers.
Check Robby and Gary's sprouting broccoli as I do she has had hers 3 years. Still growing.
shit looks dank
please do a video on cauliflower
Hi Harambe, OK, will do one this year. I hope it turns out okay, cauliflowers are tricky to grow!
@@Quickcrop i learnt this last year, ended up with fairly tiny heads which had big bug problems
Did you know it’s part of the brassica family?
3.05 great info but what's the best soil to use? Fertile, organic, well draining soil :)
please add cauliflower video
Thanks for the feedback. We will look into making a cauliflower video.
To stop fly laying eggs people put - what? - around. I can't hear the word. Is it collars?
Yes, you're right, collars.
www.quickcrop.co.uk/search/collar
Ah thanks.. Collars made of what?
Our cabbage collars are made out of a heavy duty fabric.
Thanks for your quick replies - & for your useful info on everything!
you can just cut cardboard circles with a slit from the edge to the centre and slide it onto the bottom of the plant stem@@sarahwyld9194
2 C's and 1 L please!!! Broccoli!
Thanks, whoever was responsible for that appalling error has now been taken away and dealt with! We have spent two years looking for the culprit!
Some of these videos are a bit suspicious. I've noticed that the plants they plant are not the ones they harvest. It looks like the ones they showed being planted were a disaster and they went elsewhere to find some that could be harvested.
I mean, ever thought that’s because it takes several months to wait for harvest? I would think that it’s easier to grow the stuff yourself than head off to some random guy’s farm and take his crop 😂
Too much talk
