In the Philippines we grow them in full sun and they will thrive with no care at all

I live in Newark, New Jersey which is at the northern coast they grow very well here and all the way down south to Florida. They do not do well that long up in the mountains or All the Way North past Southern Connecticut especially after September when it starts getting chilly up there but they survive the winters most of the time unless we have cold Winters but they're best grown when they're mulched and covered heavy when it's cold especially at night or some people grow them in pots indoors all year round.

Maybe she is confusing cannas and gingers. Cannas will not bloom well in the shade, while gingers will.

Ummm. I have had cannas for years and they are in full sun. Maybe it's just the state I'm in.

Yes I have cannas in full TX sun. Are thriving and growing over 5 ft tall in 100 + temps. However the blooming increased when it dropped to upper 80s.

Same here, at first they were against the house where they didnt get much sun. I moved them to where they get full sun but not til after noon and they love it...zone 6. Looks like she is in california or Florida where much hotter and most plants need some shad e

I don't agree. It all depends on the climate of the country! Here in Canada the just LOVE the sun and do best planted out in full sun. All mine are perfect there, whereas in any shade they won't even bloom. So, miss master gardener, specify your location before you kill people's Cannas in northern parts of the world ;P

When I planted mine here in sunny California, I read they like full sun. I figured out by the end of the year when they were all burnt, to move them to shade. much happier.

You are not giving the correct information: they do not like shaded conditions but the sunnier the better. The less direct sunlight, the slower the growth with less leaves and less flowering.
