I assume that it used ultrasonic sensors and mapping software to keep track of where it is within the maze and to calculate the quickest route?

Wow,That is a hard maze i would even have a hard time doing it.Tell me if i'm wrong but is it using backtracking algorithms to find it's way,What sensors are used?

do they have to use infrared light reflectivity sensors or is it up to the builder, and would ultrasonic sensors work just as well?

what is the first and second time for

They have a little robot try to find a goal. In the mean time it's mapping the terrain. If by the time it finds the goal it hasn't mapped the whole terrain (or most of it) then it tries to finish up.
The second time around is supposed to show that the mouse can find the fastest route to the goal.
It competition so the fastest one to the goal wins a prize.
