They have a little robot try to find a goal. In the mean time it's mapping the terrain. If by the time it finds the goal it hasn't mapped the whole terrain (or most of it) then it tries to finish up. The second time around is supposed to show that the mouse can find the fastest route to the goal. It competition so the fastest one to the goal wins a prize.

I wouldn't think they care if the robots retrace. It's not like some of them know they have made it to the end anyway.
I assume that it used ultrasonic sensors and mapping software to keep track of where it is within the maze and to calculate the quickest route?
