I fished off Iceland's 'limits' way back in the 70's. (Cod War era). We took whatever got caught in our trawls as did everyone else. I saw the writing on the wall when catches became smaller and smaller, as did the cod, and I left the industry. The comments below calls anyone who disagrees with heavy fishing today, wimps and Liberals etc. I was never a Liberal and never will be. Just a guy who did deep sea fishing for a living and saw what was happening. Sure, the Ruskies, Spanish and all, helped the situation to become dire. Ever see Halibut the size of five foot long these days or a sole which could feed two?. Didn't think so. As Dylan stated... 'The Times They Are a Changin'. Bottom line: your grand kids won't be able to afford fresh fish.
I was born on the Shetland Islands. I fished there for years. some of the finest fishing grounds in Europe. Thankyou for the footage. It brought back many memories. great to see the Solans and the Killer Whales! The deck boss would be the Boatswain (Bosun or Bo's'n) I really miss that ocean and the life of a fisherman but there is no going back for me now. its a young man's game and I live over a thousand miles from the nearest sea! (Iowa USA). Thanks again for the memories of that part of my life and for the song. how many tonnes were in that shot?
This is not an easy job, but I'am thankful for what these men (sometimes women) do so that we can enjoy eating fish. Be safe out there guys. And LOVE that song.
+Chris Ryan No wonder, as the fishermen are depriving them of their natural food, leaving them hungry. The owners, on the other hand, get fatter and fatter.
@@youyouulf Uh, that's not how it works. The Orca have plenty of food left. They are also smart animals, and they know damn well that some of the Mackerel will manage to escape from the trawl net, and when they do the Orca pick them off. They have adapted pretty well to the fishing industry.
i used to go on 2 sea trips a year, but at over a 100 euro a day out was expensive, and the hard part getting home and she asks did you get the dinner and me with not as much as a mackerel.
This is where your Mackerel in tomato sauce, in a oval tin on the supermarket shelf, comes from. In the Irish sea, stocks are depleted so much that summer catches of those fish that follow the Mackerel shoals have......gone.
I really enjoyed this video. That was a major catch that will provide nourishment for many starving families, instead of the big fish waiting on the fringes! Good luck to all fishermen. it's not an easy life for any man.
did u ever hear a sound that you found different or did you ever hear a song you like so much ...you maybe sang along ...or did you ever ...till ur cup was filled ...do that again ...hey life is good only because of jesus .
No wonder the seas are depleted of fish, the scale of fishing using this techniques such as purse fishing and targeting the entire shoal, there is going to be nothing left!
This is why Shetland needs full independance. There are more boats from other nations(Irish, Scottish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish) fishing in our seas than Shetland boats. I'm no Liberal Lefty but you should see the size of the massive Dutch super trawlers that will fish within 2 miles of our coast and apparantly those same vessels are responsible for destroying the fish stocks off Africa too.
Remember as much as it doesn't want to be Shetland is still part of the U.K. as is Scotland, so for now your "other nations " reference to Scottish vessels is invalid, however I do agree with the bulk of your comment, Brussels and Maggie thatcher I think come to mind as the main culprits, I've been away from the fishing for a number of years now but if I remember correctly some landlocked countries were even given quotas to fish in our waters
Poor wales, we are taking their source of food. Does Anyone wonders how many boats do this per day? I'm a experience angler and I didn't catch one Single Spanish Mackerel this year or last year when I used to bring five of them home. This type of fishing is wrong and we should be concern about this for the future of our children.
Wholesale slaughter. After the Icelandic Bank collapse, they turned their sights on mackerel as the increasing water temps meant mackerel were venturing into their grounds. Overnight, they increased their annual quota from 2.5Ktonnes to 60Ktonnes for Iceland and the Phaeroes. This is why I haven't caught any mackerel for over 6 years. Last and this year, they have clawed their way back from the brink of extinction. So what of the larger predatory fish and mammals that depend on them? The same old story. Greed. I can hear them shouting : it's a big shoal this one, take 'em all lads! Sandeel? Dredged for feckin' fuel oil and animal feed. How unnatural is that. When will pigs and cows get a crossover mutated virus with worldwide affecting issues? Only a matter of time!
And for those that think the Alaska Pollack are going extinct anytime soon. The Alaska fishing and wildlife conservation service only allows 1 percent of all monitored stocks in Alaskan waters to be caught each year. The biggest school of these fish ever seen was an estimated 2.5 billion fish weighing an estimated 1 billion tons of fish. Last year they allowed 10 million tons to be caught.
Hi! If i gave you my e-mail, would it be possible for you to send me some of this footage? Via something like 'wetransfer'. I am looking for footage in which the camera isn't moving, and if possible one that shows the same landscape when fishing is taking place and when it is not. I know i can download from youtube, but it would be awesome if i could have something with the highest possible quality. Thanks!
one day there will be no fish left in the sea. i can remember going fishing with my dad 10 years ago off the rocks and u would catch a fish everytime i cast out. but nowadays i go to the same place and noting its wrong get rid of all these factory ships they are cleaning out everything.
Thank GOD we’re leaving the EU at the end of 2020. Maybe then we can get back to sustainable levels and keep these Mega trawlers off our fishing grounds. Taking out a full shoal or year class like this will end in disaster for future fish sustainability. It’s greed not need that promoted this type of fishing!
A lot of boats like this in the uk fleet too John. Hugely expensive to build, built with government subsidies, they don't want to stop the fishing they just want to be able sell it to the EU countries. UK government couldn't give two Sh**s about the state of commercial fishing practice. Sad but true.
@@kinblanking UK boats get no subsidies to build these type of boats. All self funded and with massive bank loans. Pelagic fishing is one of the most sustainably managed fisheries in Europe. Not long ago scientists even suggested increasing the mackerel quota because there was such a high quantity and if stocks become too large then it can lead to canibilism due to lack of feed.
Hi Magnus, no subsidies currently, but the upscaling of uk fishing fleet over the last 50 years certainly used government money for building large trawlers. My uncle sold/took a payment to give up (decommission ) his boat (one of many fisherman) that allowed quotas / licences etc. to be purchased and added to large vessels carrying put much more industrial methods of fishing. The beginning of the end really. "Science" increasing palaegic quotas due to potential cannibalism ........... .....what happened before industrial fishing, fish species have never been looking for someone to intervene, they balanced themselves. The only thing that would promote cannabalism is the lack of a natural food source. Awful argument from "scientists ".
Aye ignorance is bliss, why is it you think "foreign" boats LEGALLY fish Scottish waters? Fishery Protection vessels can certainly board and check their catch so why is it they are unable to stop them fishing, have you any idea? Could it be down to licence agreements and quotas do you think, licences our government sold to these foreign boats which are basically collecting from the sea what they have already paid for. No one has mentioned it in my earshot yet but we'll be paying £ millions to those "foreigners" in compensation for the removal of their legally obtained fishing rights.
Everyone hating on these commercial fishing boats don’t see the big picture they only see a big haul. You know the thing is that smaller boats will fish exactly as much and maybe more ( cause they will be less checked up on) as these big ones. Also these boats believe it or not is better for the environment beacause they only need one trip when small ones need 5.
It pays for the crew and this video is in fine weather, I speak from experience I was a trawlerman for 20 years try fishing in winter in the North Sea on a 20 metre boat, before you make comments
Been Mackerel fishing all summer, caught a grand total of 9 and it seems the rest of shore fishermen are having the same problem. Just the odd fish here and there, your grandkids will hear tales of great catches and money made but will never know what a Mackerel is.
that's one way to get fish out of this world.look at the Atlantic cod you could walk on it it was so thick in the ocean floor and now all gone.and never we will see it again . all about greed

How do you end up moving from shetlands to IOWA just curious?
The song is from Dire Straits...Mark Knopfler "The Trawlerman's Song"...
The mackerel stocks are devastated around Ireland and getting worse every year.easy to see why with footage like this.
horrendous
Goes for the whole northern half of the Atlantic

Visit to a museum next 20 years if you want to see a mackeral !

Great video. How hard is it to get a job as a deck hand if you have the sea survival and other 3 certificates?
From what i have seen , find the fishermans local pub and have a beer and chat telling em ya want a job, jobs still come up.

Make the most of it we are getting our waters back.
this is NOT deep sea trawl, mackerels are pelagic fish. they're not catching orange roughies here. Great footage!
Is that were dolphins hunting for mackerel ?
I like the song
Those wales were looking for these fish...
They follow the boats, taking fish that spill from the nets.So the boats are making there feeding easier.
I think one of them could have come from Cardiff.
No wonder there's fuck all left in the sea.
Dave Mfc u
It seems they all had a bit too much Java before casting the nets. The caffeine-crash should be tremendous.
If you guys made any money this trip can you upgrade the 10 fps camera cuz im getting sea sick just watching this.
NICE FISHING ...
really like the song
Pretty sure there is an abundance of mackerel?
Mark Knoffler ?
They should get a bigger net... It would save going back out for the rest of the food chain....

Hope they left some for the Orcas.
Next time for music, try "The Herky-Jerky Song", by the Jerky Boyz...match the jerky camera work...
