- At a Dearborn School Board meeting Thursday, hundreds of people filled the Stout Middle School auditorium. There was shouting, booing, and more as people shared their thoughts about certain books in school libraries after a parent reported them as being sexually explicit and inappropriate for children.

The more you can think critically and objectively about a decision before you make it, the more likely the decision will be the best for you. The less you are driven only by emotion and instinct, the fewer impulsive or irrational decisions you will make. Bringing children up to place greater importance on feelings is what leads to decisions that lack discernment. Teach them the difference between right and wrong. How many irrational decisions did you make based on sexual feelings? Or feelings in general?

Public Schools allow parents to sign waivers if they want to clear a book list for their children, it's just that simple, so this isn't about a book, it's about religious BS, and that's all it's about. I came across this video the other day so decided to order a copy of one of the books mentioned “This book is gay” to judge from my self what the fuss was about….I’m a British, mid 40’s, mum of 2 boys (now grown and left school) and hardly a prude BUT oh my word…I read most of it and I can tell you 100% that is NOT a suitable book for school and I would be protesting too and standing in solidarity with these parents.
I dont want to pick up the book myself, so could I have some specific quotes from the book to know how it is inappropriate?

This fight is beyond just pornographic books, it’s a fight against the inherent bias of western education to favour liberal ideas. I believe political and cultural values should not be taught or pushed onto students in school. School should teach you How to think and not What to think. If schools looked at both sides of the arguments, my opinion might be different, but I’m still a high schooler in Canada, and everyday in my classes, beliefs that I do not agree with are pushed on me and I am not allowed to speak up for fear of retribution. Also with your point of private schools: not everyone can afford a private school, they have no choice but to be indoctrinated. They just don't want their kids minds filled with sexually explicit material before they're even able to feel those types of urges. My former school district has a policy where parents can call up the principal of any K-12 school and tell them they dont want their kids checking out certain books. Other than that, any student can check out any book. My former school district respects free speech and supports diversity of thought. They do not ban books like we’re living in Fahrenheit 451.

If you disagree personally and your child goes to my former school district, you can call up the principal directly and tell him “I don’t want my kid reading Mein Kampf.” Same goes for content you might think of as pornographic. But that doesn’t give you or I the right to censor these books just because we don’t like them.

One mother even said she isn't opposed to LGBT friendly books, just opposed to children being exposed to bedroom activities and instructions to go online to meet strangers.

As an LGBTQ+ person I’m glad people are taking a stance against this. We should not blame the LGBTQ+, the children, the parents, nor the authors since they could’ve never expected these books to end up on children’s spaces. We should blame the people who brought those books and accepted them into schools. I’m not American so I’m unaware of the severity of the situation. Although it’s ok to reach children to respect others, we should draw the line if said material becomes sexually explicit in nature. And just because some of those books are LGBTQ+ centered, the people trying to eliminate sexual material from schools are immediately classified as LGBTQ+phobes. If anyone disagrees with any of my previous statements I would be glad to address it.
