Lightning Barrage, Woburn Massachusetts

A strong line of thunderstorms crossing eastern Massachusetts on Sunday evening, March 29 2020 sent a core of cloud to ground lightning right over my location from about 8:45 to 8:50 p.m. While it was very cool at the surface (temp in lower 40s), there was a layer of warm and humid air just above the cold layer, feeding the storms in an unstable atmosphere. The video quality is poor as this was shot with a cell phone stuck between a window and a screen under the roof of an outdoor stairway, facing north. The lightning strikes progress from left to right with the storm's movement. At 1:48 my house is struck directly, the bolt hitting an unused CB antenna left mounted to the chimney and grounded with insulated copper wire. Although the antenna was destroyed (literally blown to thousands of pieces) by the strike, the copper ground worked as designed and conducted the bulk of the current safely into the ground. However, one of two cable TV lines and 2 landline telephone lines were blown out. The electric current also passed through the incoming water pipe, stirring up the water enough to result in rusty water for a few hours.

Wow. Nice and aggressive thunderstorm. You are very lucky with this unused antenna. This has definitely prevent you from more damage or even fire.

The only thing that got fried was the land line telephone line. Everything else was fine. :)

There is not any more from this particular night, but I believe I have another video I have not uploaded yet from a few weeks later that has some really powerful thunder on it from close lightning strikes.
