  • In today's video I wanted to do a relaxing little repot with a few plants. I moved my variegated dragon scale to stratum and then moved a maranta to pon and lastly, decided to pot up a couple hoya in my aroid mix and give them a cute trellis to grow on. Thank you so much for watching!

    I just put a beautiful Jacklyn into pon after the corm was producing its second leaf in stratum and she didn’t make it! She had the most perfect gold leaf and the moment I put her into pon it started rotting 😢
    Should have waited a bit longer… it was sad.
    Put the corm back into stratum again but took it out of the cabinet afraid that it would get mushy in there. Maybe if it dries a bit first it comes back…
    It was so beautiful!

    Those Hoya setups are so cute! 🥰
    Do you rinse the roots that were growing in your moss and perlite propagation mixture before transferring to soil?

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 3 měsíci +1

      You don't have to rinse them off but I would make sure there aren't big clumps of moss on the roots that can stay moist under the soil. That can potentially lead to rot if it's staying too wet. I'm using less moss and more perlite in the mix now on any new props I do so it's easier to come off. It can come off easier when the moss is wet 🫶

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Marantas have nodes! You can cut below the bump on the stem and it will grow new roots from there. Calatheas I would divide to prop them.

      I used to back in the day but I prefer to make my own now. I used fox farm for over 2 years but peat moss is not sustainably harvested. Aeration is so so so important for root health. A DIY mix is more cost effective anyway and you just buy all your ingredients in bulk and make a big batch.

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It sounds like it's possibly some shock from the repot - some plants and alocasia are more sensitive to their roots being messed with. Sometimes they can bounce back though but sometimes they continue to decline. I would try and keep it in a good light and conditions if you have it and hopefully, it will perk up. If it continues to decline I would unpot it and reroot in stratum or water for a few weeks then pot back up. When you do repots you can also water in a soil conditioner that can lessen shock - I used super thrive back in the day - it's like a vitamin boost. I recently have been using the marphyl brand and it's worked well for transplant shock.

    Hi Melissa! Such beautiful plants! I need to add at least one variegated alocasia to my collection. You mentioned fertilizing with the foliagepro. Do you use the recommended 5mL/gallon or do you use a little more? I heard alocasia and some aroids tend to be heavier feeders

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you!! 🙏 I only use the production dose so the 5 ml/gallon. That seems to be plenty to keep them growing happy. Some plants get watered with it twice a week like my bigger moss poles because I'm worried about underfeeding them. The nutrient reading in pon seems to be plenty with that dose.

      So sorry that happened 🥲 I'm a little worried mine might be doing the same. Hoping it can give you more color soon!
