      By 1944 the sight of one of these was extremely rare and more often than not was ran by inexperienced crews. Almost all the experienced crews were already dead or missing from fighting on the eastern front. Also by 1944 most of the opposition facing Tiger 1 was easily capable of shooting right through its frontal armor. This tank was good in the early parts of the war simply due to it being able to out range its opposition. However if they got close to it all its advantages became weaknesses.

During one of our exercises at the Grafenwoehr training area, I noticed a large horseshoe shaped remnant of rusted steel on one of the old firing ranges. I dismounted and inspected it more closely. To my amazement, I identified it as the turret of a Tiger I. The roof was gone, and the hull had been blasted repeatedly into scattered fragments. So sad that nearly all of these magnificent tanks were either scrapped or used as targets on firing ranges. At least this Tiger and a couple of others survived.

      Yes, they did some very sophisticated design and engineering. But what they gave up was simplicity and the ease of mass productions. The American Sherman M4 was an inferior tank to the German tanks. Sometimes it would take the loss of 4 Shermans to get close enough to kill one Tiger. But when Shermans are being mass produced at a 37 to 1 rate the Americans could afford those kinds of losses. In all over 50,000 Shermans were built during WWII. This was opposed to only 1.350 Tiger 1's. A stated, that's a ratio of over 37 to 1.

      interestingly , tiger 131 doesn't seem to have had any transmission problems , does it ? Plenty of engine problems, especially when it was being tested to destruction by the British, but no transmission problems,.. I wonder if this is because the transmission problems you refer to are specific to the Panther tank, which used a different gearbox ? ..a gearbox that was itself replaced on the model G ..?
      Anyways, Tiger 131 certainly seems to be running quite well, and surprisingly fast for such a big old tank...

    The US produced just under 50,000 M4 Sherman Medium Tanks of all types during WWII, they served in every theater of operation and were used by nearly every one of the Allied nations armed forces. The Soviets produced around 80,000 T34 Medium Tanks from 1940 to 1945 and another 80,000 well into the 1960's.
    In contrast, the Germans produced around 1,800 Tiger Heavy Tanks of all variants. The average Tiger weighed twice what a Sherman or T34 weighed which limited their versatility. They averaged 4 gallons per mile fuel efficiency (that's GPM not MPG) which was not good for a nation with limited petroleum reserves, and compared to it's competition, the Tiger was slow, about half the speed of the Sherman or T34, and the Tigers main turret traverse time (360°) was about a minute which made it easy for smaller, faster tanks to out maneuver it. Although the Allies never did equip a tank, TD or SP with a gun capable of penetrating the frontal armor of a Tiger, most high velocity rifles of the day could disable a Tiger from the side or from behind. Later versions of the M4, as well as the M-18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer (top speed 55mph) was equipped with the 76mm HV gun. The only time a Tiger was a real threat to Allied armor was in the tactical ambush.

    • @Wally-H
      @Wally-H Před 2 lety

      Yes that's a very good assessment. As I said in another comment here, they probably had a greater psychological impact than a physical one as allied tankers, despite most having never seen or encountered one, were scared of their reputation. Many years ago when I was at Bovington, I was in the main hall looking at the Tiger I's and Tiger II's when a bunch of Royal Tank Corps vets appeared. One of them looked at me and said "look what we were up against! What chance did we stand?" Some 50 years after the end of the war, that tanker was still in awe of the physical presence these 60 ton monsters could project. When I probed a little deeper, he admitted he'd never crossed swords with one on the battlefield, which says it all.
