Forget the Gambling or the Coups, Barney Curley was a gentle giant with a heart of gold. He was successful in every venture he attempted in life, above all he was kind hearted and caring about all who were less fortunate, happier at giving than receiving, God will make sure he has special place in Heaven🙏 RIP Barney.

Great hearing stories of successful betting stings. Was fortunate to have a great harness racing driver training my horses in 70s and 80s.We pulled off some great plunges. He had a gift.Once he was gone he could not be replaced. We used the exact same strategy as Barnie by backing the horse everywhere else but on course. No mobile phones on course in those days. Its all changed now.Couldnt be bothered betting now.Not much character in a computer.

Ok.In the 1980's I was a member of a 3 person betting syndicate based on the Superform Eagleform ratings made famous by Don Scott and his colleagues. When we started using these ratings the Sydney and Melbourne betting rings were huge with rails, outer and other arenas as well as the tote..The basis of the ratings was backing overlays at better prices than what our ratings were assessed at which is similar to todays ratings services. We regularly flew to Melbourne weekly to ensure we got best odds.We very quickly accumulated significant amounts of money as we hit a golden patch. My colleague was a brilliant mathematician and logistics person. He organised the best, hotels, restaurants and equipment and eventually decided we needed some security so he hired a driver to pick us up from the airport, drop us at the races and do the return trip after the last race in Melbourne. On one particular day the trip to the races from the airport was all good.Johnny, the driver dropped us off and we arranged for him to pick us up at the back gate of Mooney Valley half an hour after the last race.We had a brilliant day. There was so much value in the betting rings in those days that we often secured huge odds about our fancied rated horses.Fortunately it was winter so we had jackets which helped cover up the bulges of cash in our pockets. We promptly headed to the back gate to meet Johnny in the hire car.Johnny did not arrive as he got the gates mixed up.Obviously we thought it was a conspiracy as it was now dark and the Mooney Valley trots crowd was arriving and coming through the gates.I am a trots lover, but I must say that standing in the dark with some very shady looking characters coming at us was rather daunting. We somehow slipped away and found a taxi which got us to the airport and the safety of our private room in the Ansett Golden Wing lounge where we threw the money on the table to count and enjoy our Crown Lagers.I personally had 114k on me which in todays terms must be about 300k.The relevance of this story is reflection on the great opportunities that existed in those days. That partiicular opportunity decreased quickly over time as more players got on board the ratings until the value disappeared. In its strogest period we could back up to eight horses in a race and have all of them running for a winning result. We then moved onto quinellas and trifectas using the same ratings but that is another story.Johnny got sacked !
