You're wrong about Dozer Blades. They are worth it - they are free lol. Even if they were 5pts it would be worth it if you're playing a tank company with up-close tank chassis.
Ah my bad! They were 5 pts when the codex first dropped. As they are free it would be rude not to take them :)
@@MordianGlory I dont think it being free is intentional, looks like GW just missed it on the Munitorum Field Manual, they are 5 points on everything else
I'd say they are only worth it on chimeras tbh
@@Chalk506 it has no cost in the codex including with the cadia stands box, so might be free now for LR, still +5 pts on Chimera
They're 5 pts on tank commanders and free on line tanks. (Silly)
Not to mention the Chad Leman Russ has a bottom hull too 😊
Especially grandpa Malcador tanks has a bottom hull
🌶
An absolute giga chad loadout
"How did the plasma death ball do against the foe?"
"Complete annihilation."
"Where is the tank?"
"Complete. Annihilation."
Just get all Punishers, with heavy bolters, and heavy stubbers. Point them all at anything. Just bury them in dice. Even if they don't destroy it, the other player will leave when they realize that every turn they'll have to wait for at least ten minutes for your shooting phase.
im a fan of the '3 shermans+firefly' formation with 3 battlecannon russes and a vanquisher
That’s what I’m saying! (Also love the firefly and Sherman! I got into 40k after making ww2 models)
Lets not forget the lost turrets as well. The anihilator wit hits twin lascannons, the conqueror with its shrter battlecannon and coaxial stubber and the vanquisher with coaxial heavystubber/storm bolter...
Are these even able to be taken anymore? I know I’d love to use my old conqueror from ages ago!
@@jessepatten8697 they are all in legend. so they are shit and wont probably be updated anymore.
Guess the community will have to do the job itself.
@@samyeru6692 I've made Annihilator Turrets using the Lascannons from the Heavy Weapons Squads and the Exterminator turret option. Tricky to get things lined up properly, but fairly easy to make within minutes.
As someone that has an Annihilator pattern Leman Russ I got in the 90s (Starting to show My age for how long I have been playing Imperial Guard ) do get to use it . Lucky for me all my tanks and the turrets are magnetized so I am not as mad at GW for retiring that line. (yes I am not happy would have been fine if they just made it a forge world upgrade and left the rules) But it was very nice for taking out armour or taller modles from cover at range. But I fear that in the future there will be only the Dorn like the are doing with the primaris.
@@stormraven8484 hope it wont end up like that...
In my only 9th edition game, Demolisher + meltas + pound them into dust order performed really well
pound them into dust is very interesting on many weapons. maybe ill field my demolisher tanks in 9th with a TC and see how they perform!
I have a Pom Pom Russ, the old-school "Catachan Russ" (the one with the brick of metal auto-cannon Exterminators bitz to replace the plastic battle cannon) that has been sitting on a shelf, unloved, but not forgotten, for over a decade. Chuffed to finally being able to put it back on the battlefield and have it actually perform!
Since you've already made a guard-style xenos army, how about a guard-style chaos army next? Chaos marines have traitor guard. Legionnaires, havocs, and possessed can stand in for heavy weapons or melee units and GW just released a plastic Whirlwind Scorpius that's in the IA Compendium. Oh right, and you could probably convert a thunderfire cannon into a rapier w/ quad launcher. Alpha Legion and Iron Warrior legion traits seem pretty compatible too.
He has death guard, which can be run similar.
Its in the works, Big Chaos/DG army on the way :)
@@MordianGlory Hell Yeah!!!
El Classico has been my MBT of choice since I got started with the 3.5 codex. I've been on the fence about picking up a 4th, as I'm constantly using my older kit as a Tank Commander(Gatekeeper FTW!). My 3xHB Punisher never gets promoted, but the Las/Plas Executioner does all the time. Attacking the rest of my parking lot with magnets as we speak, Banesword, Vanquisher, and 2 Dorns on the way!
Thank god I was just wondering this
Great content as always MG, and loving the Pom Pom, as had honestly just ignored it, but during this video looked at it again. And seeing it's now a strength 8 Autocannon, it now looks so much better, and will definitely give it a go soon.
38:40 Honestly the Shadowsword should be able to do that too, but I'm just glad Guard have access to at least one ignores invuln.
Love this Long-form content!! Video was fantastic and enjoyable to every degree. I personally love the Ambassador!
The Ambassadors Choice, the only tank for the true Gentleman Officer.
I'm slowly building my guard army, most is classic metal tallarn and I'm now looking at the tanks I need. I love autocannons so it's great to have spent my Sunday morning learning about the Pom Pom. Cheers!
I only take the Brrrrrrrrrt russ as a meme but sometimes it actually comes in handy
Starting a heavy tank list new to guard and just tore up my previous lists……. Thanks for a very enjoyable and informative video.
Thanks for the advice, I love the names you give them. I'll be running 3 El classicos and an ambassadors choice
GUNNER?
YES, SIR!
I SEE A CHAOS TITAN BEFORE ME!
YES, SIR!
I DON'T WANT TO!
YES, SIR!
For the plasma ball, taking “Knight of Piety” tank ace lets you roll invulnerable saves against Mortal Wounds. Helps against the 1’s to hit.
It still feels weird getting through the whole video, and not having spent half of it listening to the singular praises of the Demolisher Tank Commanders, or Tank Commanders, at all.😊 I get that they are a bit of a different choice now, then they were prior, and Turret Weapon sort of covers the difference, but considering how often it used to be "take X Leman Russ Demolisher Tank Commanders, and one Tank Commander with Gatekeeper", it's nice to hear other options, these days. On the other hand, these kinds of video also make me wonder if, were I going to buy several Russes, would I want to magnetize all of them? Honestly, between a video like this actually fleshing out an assortment of loadouts, where there basically used to be 1-2, and considering that old primary loadout is now a bit subpar, I think I would, though it's not a skill I'm sure I would have.
On a theory craft, I really like the new Executioner Plasma Tank. Personally, I'd like plasma sponsons, but I can see where they might be suboptimal. Still, I'll always prefer my futuristic Cadian Guard to be lobbing energy attacks, instead of hurling big, explosive shells at the enemy, so yay plasma!
great content and thoughts as always - although iv been running a scions and tank list recently (not meta) with heirloom weapons and elite sharpshooters, iv been running my tanks with executioner plasma cannons and 2x plasma cannons with a flamer and iv been having great success with it
The Exterminator should have 8 shots like in 5th edition.
I was looking forward to this since you mentioned it last night on stream
Heck yea this is the stuff!!
I hope to see a baneblade video like this :)
I take a lot of infantry and artillery support with the vanquisher
They also go on the assault, to get objectives. Using brutal strength to ignore the heavy. Sure it’s not effective as mathhammer says about born solider. But realistically is effective.
Honestly I think you've underrated thr sponson flamers. They bypass hit modifiers, and the entire hit roll, wound the most common targets (marines) and anything lighter on 3s, and boost your overeatch threat a lot. The risk of up to 18 autohits on top of any 6s from the turret weapon makes people reconsider a risky charge.
Love these vids since I’m getting into guard since the loyal 32 days
I would not underestimate the Exterminator/Heavy Bolter/Multimeltas/Stormbolter combo. It is pretty dakka, but has enough strength 8/multi-wound shots to really worry most opponents. If you are using the born soldiers regimental doctrine, the amount of mid-to-high AP, multi-wound shots is troubling even to Knights, especially when you add in the auto-wounds. It's well worth giving up two low-end shots to spew out 4 multimelta shots instead. I have unloaded with these guys, annihilated squads of medium-to-heavy infantry and then charged their light units to tie them up in melee. I've fielded six of these before and they are really *surprisingly* effective. They can shred well enough in melee to ward off most assaults as well... no one wants to be tied up with them...
(EDIT: Of course, you'll want track guards and dozer blades too...)
Haven't tested it yet, but plan to try a multimelta sponson punisher, probably a flamer in the hull. Meltas take in tanks while the punisher mows down infantry ideally
Be good to see some maths hammer in your vids I like the graphs aspex chucks in his. Appreciate the hard work regardless Mords.
I think you underrate the heavy flamers, no to hit roll when you are hitting on 5+ with heavy weapons is quite significant, and the big deal against charges
Guard do have a way to get flat numbers of shots, any squad above 3 and pounded them into dust would give them min 3 shots
But really, demo cannon does seem shit, tho might be okay at killing like 5 man possessed squad or other high wound t5 infantry
Mordian, the dozer blade is free for the normal leman, it only costs 5pts for the tank commander.
I've got a Pom Pom kit in my backlog. Once I paint it up, I plan to cover it with Orky graffiti saying, "MOAR DAKKA!"
didn't see this in your vid but the Hull weapon can also be a Heavy Flamer, meaning you can have a triple heavy flamer setup on something like a demolisher Russ
Yeah, that confused me a bit.
How do we feel about 2 Russ, a Dorn, and a squad of armored sentinels backing up a group of mechanized infantry in Chimera's?
Dozer Blades seem to be free on normal Russes - they stayed off the point cost in the munitorum field manual for AoO. So I see no reason not to take one.
This.
I like 1 tank with Gate Keeper, 2 with plasma or battle cannons, and if I bring 5 I like the last 2 to be vanquishers. All with heavy bolter sponsons and then either hull weapon as both are useful.
what about using the nova cannon as your mid range pinning tank? Does it work as effectively as the autocannon?
I do usualy
Tank commander gate keeper melta
3x Leman russ executionner plasma + 3 flamers
All of it with heirloom.
Leman russ are moving forward with infanterie to secure obj. I used to do it with demolisher but it got nerfed to the ground... if only they gave it d6+3 to compete with the rest...
I'm looking for some clarification of points cost from the codex. The dozer blade is present but does not list a cost like the armored tracks and HKM. Is that a typo, or is it really free instead of the 5 pts of its counterparts?
Just what i need
Why not the Nova cannon for the dakka tank, also dmg 2 but more shots then the autocannon with d3+6
IVE GOT AN EL CLASSICO A POM POM AND AN AMBASADORS CHOICE HAHA
i am offended that the demolisher isnt on here, it has won me so many games
Demolisher cannon and demolisher battle cannon are two different weapons. Leman Russ has a demolisher battle cannon that heavy D6 S10 -3AP D3+3D compare to a standard demolisher cannon heavy D6 S10 -3AP D6D
More consistent damage, yes. It's still VERY swingy on number of shots though. :(
@@trentathawat6714 increases depending on numbers and it’s a critical damage dealer.
Damn I used the plasma russ in 8th now its meta so my mates are gonna complain rip but it is nice to my favorite Russ cannons doing work
I think the nova cannon is a great dakka tank aswell good reliable shots ignore cover and at worst is only one less shot than the exterminator I have been taking 4 leman russes at the moment two dakka one auto cannon one nova a gatekeeper and plasma and I shoot stuff and then it's not there anymore 😂 and for the job the nova does for infantry it's about same as auto cannon marines on 3s same as auto
I like the hull mounted Leman Russ, shame it only fires d6 damage though. Sounds like a Lascannon
Well I think I'm going to get 11 new Tanks and a couple Regimental Enginseers. List done.
Great video, just one question: why use an exterminator autocannon when a battle canon does more shots on average with better damage stat?
Consistent shot count and being able to fire in combat at the unit your tank is fighting. I think the battle cannon is better on paper no matter how you cut it - and I think the punisher is better for brawling up close, but I think if you want an absolute take all comers the exterminator is a okay choice. I wouldn't call it good at anything, but if you want a tank that can do something in any situation, it's your gun. Just my opinion though. I love the look of the thing, but I have found it generally underwhelming.
@@MrBlandUsername feel like a Hydra + a Good Leman Russ is better than any kind of Exterminator lol
@@MrBlandUsername wait, what? How are you supposed to shoot at the enemy you are fighting with? Have i missed something?
@@jonatanreino8461 Yes friend, yes you have.
Vehicle and Monster models can shoot at units they're in engagement range with, at BS, and -1 hit roll with heavy weapons; can never use weapons with Blast ability. Unless I too am missing something!!! That last bit is too bad as it would be so Guard to fire suicidely pointblank with dangerous weaponry.
I must say the Acceptable Losses stratagem can be a great one. No one is safe. no one.
@@whitemiasma5288 oh.... that makes the exterminator much more interesting against assault armies... a new world opens infront of me XP
Out of curiosity which load out do you think benefits the most from becoming a tank commander (I've not been able to get a copy of the new codex yet)?
Battle cannon so you can take Gatekeeper
Aw I made a tank commander with demolisher and multi meltas at the tail end of 8th then the rule changes dropped :0
I'm preparing to run a tank list in Tournament on the 4th.
3 Commanders, 6 leman Russ. Then depending on the delivery gods a Rogal Dorn + scout Sentinel. Otherwise a Hydra & 2 Hellhounds vs 2 basilisks with a commisar. babysitter
My plan was Heavy Flamer hull weapon with heavy bolter sponsons with stubbers/storm bolters on top.
Any feedback on the flamer hull weapon since I'll have 0 infantry screen? Or should I just go 3 bolters?
Where at if you don't mind me asking, I'm also planning on playing in a tournament on the 4th.
@@NANA-lq5md Battlegrounds in Midlothian Virginia (US)
Demolisher with melta’s.. if I’m scared of losing it. I send in a Punisher first to “Tank” for it.
How about a tank commander and 2 Dorn tanks?
do we think a blitz brigade of 4 leman russ's (1 tank commander) essentially deep striking (armed with punisher cannons, and heavy bolters) could be something in a 2k list? obviously with alot of other stuff going on in the list. just drown the enemy with punisher fire
That would be very easy to screen out unless they're just arriving in your deployment zone
So what's the point of the Eradicator? The Demolisher is just that but far superior!
Barebones with an executioner. Run 5. Overcharge em. Run 2 TCs. One with Gatekeeper and 1 with an executioner. Big brain time
And the taurox primes?
I mostly plat 1k pt so I run two tanks. Do you think a plasma deathball and a punisher/bolters is a decent pick?
@@Paint_at_Dawn We are a small group and the matches aren't planed in advance. Or to be more precise, everyone else has a few armies (SM, Tau, Orcs, Dark, regular and crazzy eldar...) and I don't know what to expect so I'm trying to find a balanced loadout.
Personally I kit my Leman Russ's for fun and fluff not always going for the tournament builds all the time always going for the must win hard core tournament lists is just a dull way to play your guard IMOP got all the old turret set ups to that you cant use anymore but still use them when playing with mates.
Dozer blades are free.
with that 3-5 mbt's did you count in tank commanders?
Yes :)
@@MordianGlory Aye, thanks mate
@MordianGlory re: executioner "If you don't put the heavy bolters on this tank, you might only get 4 shots if you're getting run down by hordes" but doesn't the turret have blast?
It does, but blast rarely helps because most armies, even horde ones, stick to 10 man squads. And when you come across someone running big blobs, the Dakka tank will deal with them better then the plasma death one :)
@MordianGlory I won't argue, I don't like plasma cannons anyway 🤣 I think Necrons may be the only army that can get away with running 20 man units.
I got Russ Rush Fever
I got a fever - and the only prescription is more dakka.
First?
First lmao gottem nice love me some Russes
Having watched many of your videos I'm starting to think you're not quite the tactician you think you are.
