Where can I borrow the two bars?
They are not to expensive here is the link. 2 piece tension bar amzn.to/3yd6O3x
Make them.
2) 18” long pieces of 1/2” sch 40 blk pipe and weld a 3” stub of 1/2” cold rolled round bar in the end.
Voila 2 winding bars
Amazon you can get them for 14 dollars
@@snowblind796 You sound very handy. I didn't have any pipe laying around, so just cut a 3' cold rolled rod in half and had my winding bars for $12.
@@nickyjames1430 perfect @Nicky James. That works.
I made them in the shop I was working in. Drops (leftovers). I used the 1/2” pipe for comfort.
Awesome video, so thoughtfully done. I did it myself and springs were $111 and took 28 qtr turns. Thanks your a great teacher.
I've already commented but I have to say thanks again. This is by far the best step by step video
I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the great video! I feel like I could start doing this for a living now, lol. When so many trades are asking so much money for repairs it's nice to learn how to do it yourself!
You can do it!
This is the best garage door installation video I've found yet.Thank you very much sir ,👍👍
Glad it helped
Simple the best step by step.
Thank you so much! Not as hard as I thought it would be!
THANKS! Really informative, detailed instructions on how to do this. I've never done it before, followed your instructions as I went along, and the garage door is back to working perfectly! I've always told my kids if you can read, you can cook, and this certainly proves my point. Feels so good to do it yourself.
Nice explanation and very thorough!
This guy explains everything good 👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS VIDEO WAS SO AWESOME AND PERFECT DETAILS. I got a quote for $600 for the job…i got my own springs (measuring was maybe hardest part), came with bars, went and bought some clamps and grips, total cost $175. Savings $425. Not hard at all with this great video. Big thanks again!!
Glad it helped!
Excellent Video, thank you.
Thank you for making this video, very well done! In the past I never would have attempted this myself after hearing all the contractors say how dangerous it is. Yes it can be dangerous, but I just took my time and followed your instructions. Liked and subscribed!
Welcome to the channel.
Awesome video. step by step. Thank You. I'm ready to replace my springs.
Thank you very much for all this valuable information. You explained it very well and covered every detail
Hope you are always well :)
Jim, I couldn’t have done it without your excellent step by step procedures. I watched it about 5 times before I tackled it. I nailed it on the first time. No adjustments made!!
Thanks again Jim

Thank you for the lesson, God bless.
Glad it was helpful!
many thanks for the lesson
You are welcome!
Thank you for a clear and no frills explanation. Replaced my springs in about 2 hours without issue. The only thing I would point out is that measuring and buying the correct size spring is very important. There were other videos for that. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Jim! Very detailed instructions. I did this a few times in the past, but I need a refresher every time I do this after so many years 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Well done

You are very welcome
Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge and safety tips. I made my own winding bars by cutting a 36" cold rolled steel bar in half and marking the ends with yellow electrical tape so you can see that each bar goes all the way in when winding.
Great tip!
Well explained!!! Thanks
Glad you liked it
@@getitdonehomerepair it make me feel confortable to do it my self, of course, applying all your tips !
Do I need to change both if only one broke ? 🤔
Thanks again
@@hugocontreras4067 Yes I would recommend replacing both. Good question.
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job Jim. I noticed when the you're tightening the springs it's impossible not to wince a bit. Like when someone pulls a rubber band and aims it at you but doesn't let go: You still wince! Understandably.
Great tip!
The best video I have ever seen. I have a question, my garage door is some time open itself could you please tell me what wrong with its ? Thank you very much
Thank you very much. Despite the fact that the gate is in Europe and we count in centimeters the turnover was the same when converted to feet :D
I saved a lot of money by doing this.
Here in America we use Freedom Units exclusively. Thank the good Lord above. 🇺🇸🗽💪🏻✊🏻🔧
Great Video. Very helpful. Thanks! Sadly whoever did the original install overtightened the set screws and almost punched holes through the bar. It makes me wonder if the strength of the bar is compromised. Of coarse it's lasted this long. I'm guessing it will be okay.
Well done! Your video is very informative. You might add mention about how not to put your hand on an enegized spring. It is powerful enough the remove skin and tendons if it gets away from you.
Great tip!
Hey,,, what a great torsion spring tutorial 😊. Will have to replace my 7x16 garage in the near future, as the system was installed in 1979.
This is St Paul Mn, and rebuilt the heavy wooden door twice now in 30 years. The door weights over 300# and cannot be rebuilt again. The Lift seized up, (Liftmaster 2000 series,)door open Saturday night, 😮 not a clue on what to do… Sunday I checked for power, ok, jumped the opener leads and the door worked,,, Checked the manual reset modular, it was shot,, I jumped the the 2 hot wires going to the reset, and the lift works perfectly. Replacement manual reset modular is unavailable.
I will rely on the Square D 15 amp circuit breaker for safety tripping, tested that also, Question: Will the 1/3 hp 2000 Liftmaster work on a new steel to steel 7x16 door, with new tension torque springs,,?? I am a curious active 80 year old gal with all the right tools and equipment
EXCELLENT.
Many thanks!
What an informative video. Thanks my garage door does not work because the torsion spring is not adjusted. Where can I get the bars? Can I use the reinforce bars?
thank you
You're welcome
Hi I love your video! Very detailed and your instructions are flawless. I'm hoping that you would be willing to answer a question. What keeps the springs from unthreading from the cone during normal operation? I followed your instructions precisely. I have had two right springs unthread from the cone on the second to the last 1/4 turn. The second spring was a replacement for the first (ExpressGarageDoors). After the second failure the seller refunded my total purchased with almost no explanation. Am I doing something wrong or did I simply get faulty springs? Can I rethread the spring back onto the cone and try again? Thanks, Steffan
What's the length of the torsion springs that you use? Does the springs have different grade level, such as regular to heavy duty quality or they dont' any quality on them? My garage had 20" torsion springs on so do I have to use the same spring length when replacing them or I can use the 32" springs? What's the different in spring length? Do I do 31 quarter turns for 7 feet height garage door on both 20" and 32" springs? Thank you so much for making this video.
Excellent video because it includes info others leave out., I had a problem. The rod that holds the springs was coated with some sort of grey rust. I could not push the rod back and forth. Yes I did file the burrs off. Solution: remove the end brackets with bearings; remove springs and spool. I still had to sand the rods first. ( or just take the whole thing apart and buy a new rod)
Thanks for the info!
Thanks for this video. Really helpful. I did it myself but I got pretty nervous winding the springs. Not something to take lightly. If you’ve got the diy capability give it a shot. Otherwise just have someone else do it. Big sense of accomplishment when I had it completed and it was working so smoothly. Shouldn’t have to worry about it again for quite a while.
Great job.
Great Job,,,
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video. I would add that you need to pay close attention to the winding of the cable onto the drums while winding up the springs. My experience was that the cables easily slipped off the drum while I was concentrating on winding the springs. I had to use vice grips on the pipe to keep tension on the cables.
Oh and also my 7 ft door only required 25, 1/4 turns on each spring. If you torque a spring too much it will pull that end of the door up off the floor as soon as you tighten the set screws and release the spring. If this happens I would recommend taking a few 1/4 turns off the spring while you’re right there. My2 cents.
Thank you for your input and for watching.
Great information! If you can change a flat tire on a LA freeway at night, you can surely do this! If you are afraid to change a tire, call the garage door repair man and spend the money! BTW, having someone come and change your tire at night on the freeway will set you back a couple hundred dollars!
Thank you
Glad it helped!
I have the same door you are working on, but my door only has one spring. but it has been working for the last 10 years, but it just broke. wondering if it should have 2 springs ?
Gloves and protective safety glasses not regular glasses too you also need the correct winding bars
Takes the mystery out of replacing your own springs. Questions: how do you know what size spring you need?
Are there heavy-duty replacements? Thanks!
1) IMO, weigh the door then find a site that lists the appropriate spring size. Some just measure the old spring(The channel owner has a video on measuring if you go to his channel page), but that is not always as straightforward as it sounds and that assumes the door had the correct spring to start with.
2) yes, but DDM garage door's website is the only site I found that will list "upsized" springs.
Check out my play list for how to measure a spring.

Thanks!
Thank you so very much! Very meticulous description and right to the point. I did my garage door today and works perfectly. All the best.
I'm happy to help Matt. Thanks for watching.
Thanks you I appreciate it.
Perfect video ! My spring broke 5/08/22 , Will order new spring Monday 5/9 . Thanks for a great video ! Got a good reputable spring dealer that will do mail order you can recommend ? If so Please post their company's name .
Glad it helped! Sorry I picked it up in a big box store.
How does it differ when you have 4 springs on the door? It's a heavy wood door. Thanks.
Nicely done. One comment regarding the spring "turn" table that appears at at 17 minutes: [case1] to go from a 6'6" to a 7' garage door (an increase of 1/2 foot), requires an 3 quarter turns while [case2] increasing from 7' to 7'6" garage door (another increase in 1/2 foot) requires only 1 additional quarter turn (33 total)- then, [case3] increasing yet another 1/2 foot (from a 7'6" to an 8' garage door) requires 3 quarter turns just as the increase from a 6'6" garage door to 7' garage door [which is case1] . I've seen this table in another video. That doesn't seem right?
Careful, Jim...You'll upset all those garage door techs who like to keep people thinking this is a big secret and that they'll be killed if they attempt this. It has some some danger but with the right tools it's no more dangerous than many other jobs. I've done a few over the years. Keep a set of winding bars in my tool box.
Thanks for watching.
Say that again after winding a pair of 319.s here in Florida
That 225. I could wind with a roller stem lol
Thank you for the video! A spring recently broke in my garage and this video was the way!
Wow, really well done! I’m replacing my springs today and feel very confident after seeing this.
(The manufacturer just wants me to call them to get it done, what a waste of money - I’m not impressed by them.)
Glad I could help!
This is big job
Yes it is a little difficult. Thanks for watching
Hello, that Bearing between the two springs, can it be greased or replaced while it is a part? Also what type of grease to use on the springs and other assorted parts thank you very much.
You can buy a lubricant just for the garage door. I think it is made by WD40
If you have two springs, which direction do you turn to torque? Also, which spring would you adjust for the open and close of door so that it is leveled?.
You need to turn both spring the same amount of turns.
If it’s too much tension would we need to put the vice grips back in place? Especially the one at the top by the pulley?
Yes you will need to be just as carful as when you installed it.
Had springs replaced 7 for my 2 door years ago. Replaced the opener 4 years ago. It's always run a bit slow, but fails to open sometimes now. Doesn't seem balanced when testing disconnected. I tightened springs 3 x 1/4 turns...too tight, wouldn't close. Backed down 1 x 1/4 turn at a time till I got back to where it was originally which is the only tension that lets it open and close most of the time. All joints, pulleys greased. It is possible they sold me springs that are too small? Do different sizes/strengths even exist?
Yes it is very important to get the correct spring for the weight of the door. The only way to get the correct spring is to weight the door when it is not connected to the opener.
Got same length torsion spring and followed the steps for replacement of springs; but issue I see is garage door only lift up till 1 foot , stay stuck and does not move up regardless how much manual lift force I put in (in manual mode). please guide. I tried going up to 33 quarter turns (16.5 half turns) as 31 or 30 turns was not helping, rotation was clock wise for 33 quarter turns.. my old part was 218 wire x 29 long spring and new one is 225 wire and 29 long spring.
If you pull the release handle will the door go all the way up?
@@getitdonehomerepair figured it, switched the sides and it works now correctly, thanks again
Great video step by step
Thanks 👍
I’m about to change mine for the first time, just curious how much tension is on the spring, is it a ridiculous amount that’s gonna rip my arm off?
assume it will
At over head door them two bars cost me $25 and a
30in spring $105
My garage door (Hass) didn’t come with the nuts and bolts. Meaning a 1/2 ride to Lowe’s ! 😬
