Pietro Parolin was appointed as Secretary of State for Vatican City by Pope Francis in 2013. Since then, the Holy See has worked to negotiate peace all over the world and to serve as an intermediary in tense discussions. Cardinal Parolin has played a role in trying to quell violent protests in Venezuela and to find a humanitarian solution in Guantanamo Bay. He’s also played a role in normalizing United States and Cuban relations.
