  • What’s happening in this Taxi Driver movie clip?
Travis (Robert De Niro, who also starred in The Irishman and the Goodfellas) enters the headquarters of one of the presidential candidates, Palantine, and offers his services there. At his demand, it is Betsy (Cybill Shepherd who also played in Clair de Lune and The Last Session) who takes his request, and very quickly we realize that he is not there for the potential future president, but rather to ask Betsy to have coffee with him, which she ends up agreeing to after a big speech from Travis.

Travis sees what he wants and just goes for it, this type of confidence is very appealing to a woman, and extremely hostile to a competing male with a weak self confidence. Travis took a massive risk with this approach but Betsy seemed to like it. She was attracted to him and probably liked his directness and honesty. Such a shame what happened on their second date. I don't think it's a big mystery. Travis is mentally ill and out of touch with reality. He has possible PTSD and insomnia and spends nights driving a cab and living in his own head. He knows the kind of things normal people do in order to be happy, and he wants to be normal and happy, but his mental state sabotages his attempts to do this. He puts the pieces together all wrong. The film hints that he spends a lot of time at that theatre when off work, so he may well have lost sight of the fact that it's a really sleazy place to bring a date, especially a girl like Betsy who any halfway sane person could instantly tell wouldn't be caught dead there.
So, it isn't that Travis didn't spend the time to think of where to take Betsy. It's that to him the choice was obvious already.

Especially in order to make them smile or laugh. And it doesn't matter how it starts. Ask them a question, Compliment them on something they're wearing, Praise them if you see them do something nice. Do it without any shame or second thoughts because you're a person who's trying to be kind and gracious to others while becoming a better version of yourself. Ironically De Niro actually asked out Cybill Shepherd in real life. She turned him down and after that they’d only interact in their shared scenes. Years later she admitted she regretted saying no

This scene is amazing, it's all so real. You can feel Travis' eagerness and nervousness while talking and how he didnt expect her to question him or try to shoo him off and instead of losing his cool he pushes through. I felt the tension just watching this scene, anyones whos asked their crush out knows exactly what he's feeling. I felt it fully when he looks around and says "It's a little hard standing here and asking you, so..." after her delayed response, been there multiple times and it makes you feel like a little kid whos asking your parents for something you had to gain to courage to ask.

Cybil Shepherd was quite a dish back in the day. De Niro was pretty handsome himself. I think it was IMDB that noted that De Niro asked Shepherd out sometime during filming. She turned him down but regretted the decision later. Oh, the rollercoaster of young love.
