I've adopted a motto "nostalgia is a trap".
- Admiral Ackbar
@@jurtra9090 Star Wars is the ultimate nostalgia trap for me. I’ve now accepted that the only Star Wars stuff that is relevant to me, are the 3 theatrical versions of the original films that I grew up with.
John: Michael Eisner-
Defunctland fans: *I am four parallel universes ahead of you*
Sure Eisner saved Disney from bankruptcy during a dark period in the 80s, but he also led it to bankruptcy yet again in the early 2000s. Disneyland Paris' opening was a failure which put a dent in Disneyland's second gate which went from a grand version of Epcot to a California-themed park in the already California-themed California. Not to mention Disney's movies in the early 2000s performed poorly too. They needed Pixar
I've been calling it "Nostalgia-bait". Disney doesn't just do it with their movies, they also do it with their PARKS! October 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of Epcot, and Disney's been releasing retro merch and a whole light show with the music of defunct beloved Epcot attractions on Spaceship Earth like "Remember this? Remember when Epcot was great?" so they could distract you from the fact that they're eliminating Epcot's original identity by shoehorning the intellectual property of their movies.
Epcot is meant to be a permanent World Expo, with World Showcase as the country pavilions and Future World showcasing technology and human achievements...so tell me how MOANA fits in with Future World? And you're right, even if they know what they're doing is wrong, they're still gonna keep grinding nostalgia and increasing prices because people keep coming to the parks.
I would guess because Moana is based on Maori history.
Why are you everywhere I go Avery? You have amazing taste in youtube videos man.
Doctor Who literally did this too less than a week ago, bringing back the most popular actor to play another incarnation of the Doctor.
Can’t say I’m unhappy about it though, shows how well nostalgia bait works.
I absolutely agree! In 2095, everyone will still be talking about new versions of Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, Disney classics etc. I have a great relationship to all of these franchises, but it would be better if the producers created something new, that they put a lot of effort into.
You’re not IN 2095!
@@jeffreygao3956 obviously... but I'm in 2023. And these franchises are all many years old, and still being squeezed as much as possible
I remember a while back seeing something about nostalgia bait, where the point someone made was references to older media was all it had. I think it might have been Spongebob. Either way, it seems that a lot of media companies are resorting to the mindset of:
"hey, remember when we were good? we just made a reference to that time! isnt that funny? we're self aware!"
and it never benefits anyone! it doesnt add anything to the story, it doesnt improve the media, it just reminds viewers of what they COULD be watching
I definitely agree with your points, especially regarding Star Wars. One of the reasons TLJ is my favourite of the Sequels is that it actually had something to say and even though it can be pretty rough at times, I really appreciate how it made it so anyone and not just Skywalkers can make their place in the galaxy. Shame the next one had to undo all of that
Absolutely! TLJ had some fantastic plot decisions, but I had my own problems with it, but it was the confident decisions it made that were undone by ROS that I enjoyed the most in that film.
Bizarre fact: I played music at one of the Irish wrap parties for when they were shooting TLJ in Ireland.
@@JohnDRuddyMannyMan That's awesome mate, keep making great vids!
Great points. I feel nostalgia is so big right now because of how terrible the current world is so we just want a few hours of just being able to enjoy a bygone fantasy that still feels familiar and comforting.
The world is not terrible! Remember all cynics are agents of the Nothing and are the ultimate threat! There is no Neverending Story movie in Ba Sing Sei.
You know screencrush damn
As a Pokémon fan, I feel this hard. For non Pokémon fans vaguely familiar with the franchise they market the original 151 Pokémon HARD.
Our hole school went to your library
I would totally watch you review and talk about Star Wars content.
Hey here’s a video idea, you could do the days of lizz truss and the leading up to her resignation and the current political situation in the UK love your videos! 😊
Became Tory leader, appointed by HM Elizabeth II, HM passes away two days in as government launching energy assistance programme for households which delays inevitable due to national mourning period. After mourning, government opts to cut taxes rather than spending, markets have a field day, parliamentary Tory party takes control and Truss ultimately resigns. Think that’s more or less it 😄
Thanks, I live in Australia and wasn’t 100% Sure what was going on over there😂😊

@@jasonhay3046 On that note, we were inundated by news articles comparing how numerous Australian PM’s have been outed by their own parties in recent times. Just hope Rishi lasts a bit longer.
Nostalgia is nice, but can be bad, for example I play CoD Warzone and loads of people love the old map (Verdansk) and people dislike it, some even hated it. But when Vanguard released and with it came the new map, Caldera, people now absolutely love Verdansk now and hate the new map, even tho the new map is a great of a map, or even better in some aspects
I miss Verdansk lol
I'm the girl with red coat when you where talking about weapons and warfare
Having never played KOTOR, maybe I oughta just watch you point out references in the media I like, I just Cassian's pistol was just that, a pistol.
Man you’re a good reason for keeping me away from suicide.
Suicide is bad
Good to know. If you’re seriously thinking in that way though, I strongly advise to talk to a professional. I’ve done it. Counselling has really helped me through some dark periods!
@@JohnnyMartwell Oh I didn't know that, you saved me wow, cheers m8! Oh wow, suicide in the whole world has stopped, wow man you fixed the world!
As someone who loves nostalgia, I do agree that it's being done excessively - to the point where it's all just a big rehash. Completely new creative works shouldn't be off the table. Nostalgia's better done in moderation.
And it's not just the movie industry that's suffering from this problem, but also the gaming industry. It just seems like so many gaming companies are just "playing it safe" and releasing rehashes instead of actually new games. In Nintendo's case, The SMB1 references are plentiful, as are the Mario re-releases. The newer Mario games (specifically in the New Super Mario Bros. series) haven't changed substantially, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars was just three mostly unchanged games put into one bundle.
How the Nazi swastika is just replaced by a Z. Coincidence?
But there is things we’re we wish nestalgia was needed for instance I alway thought the Aladdin live action retelling would have been better if Robin Williams was still alive. Or if say Star Wars the clone wars had animated the fight between obi wan and skywalker
*People watch Batman movies*
The left: "FASCISTS!"
btw, I love Heavy Spoilers
Me too :D
2:15 I don't think it's a problem with capitalism. I think it's a problem about megacorporations
Megacorps are the inevitable outcome of capitalism. It's an inherent flaw in the concept. So yes, it's a problem with capitalism, even if you don't believe capitalism is inherently a problem (which it is).
@@jonc4403 yea, I agree. I think greed is one of the main problems with any political thing. So maybe in capitalist countries they could set up some law yo stop corporations from tilting elections, markets (making the free market unfree) and so on
" Capitalism does not lend itself to innovation" John? John? Seriously John? I'm pretty lefty myself but come on now John.
Capitalism tends towards monopoly. If they can get away with not having to change, they will, particularly if they control the market. Yea competition helps, but when corporations are able to buy out the competition, you’re in trouble.
Star Wars has been a lost cause since 1999 when Lucas destroyed it himself. I mean, "meesa Jar Jar Binks" and midichlorians? That was really it for me, there are three Star Wars movies, the rest don't exist. And don't get me started on the awful Star Trek reboots.
“Capitalism doesn’t lend itself to innovation”
I disagree, innovation is the defining feature of capitalism. The reason we see such an appalling lack of imagination or creativity in these movies is because they are all controlled by ONE giant movie studio that is primarily concerned with pumping out one blockbuster hit after another. There’s no regulating force for Disney, they have NO competitors. You could argue that Marvel has DC to push back against it, and help keep them competitive and open to the suggestions of fans. However, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find anybody who thinks that DC has been helping sharpen the metaphorical iron of Marvel’s writers. Overall I think the rest of the video was very insightful, I just think this premise was incorrect.
But Capitalism tends towards monopolies
@@JohnDRuddyMannyMan plus the soviet Union created tetras
And monopolies are the opposite of innovation.
Capitalism is not about innovation, it is about finding ways to put *New And Improved You Obviously Need This* on the same tired mass produced stuff. Yes coming up with those ploys could be tagged as tiny local versions of 'innovation', but taking on real new ideas costs a lot of work which may not even pay off. Which is, under capitalism, also known as 'a terrible business model'.
@@liessas and yet your solution is stagnation which is killing us.
It is better to try and find new alternatives, then stuck in a economic system that only benefits the wealthy at the expense of the public
