  • Is recycled paper litter better than your tradition clay litter? We tried paper litter so you don't have to! I tried to answer questions I think you guys might ask and hopefully it is helpful!
Also, don't think I explicitly say that Sven did not use the litter. He definitely preferred the pine pellets and at most used the paper once or twice for his #1.

I think a problem a lot of people have with using paper litter is that clumping clay litter has become the standard over non-clumping clay litter. When I got my first cat, there was no clumping litter. I can’t understand why the directions on these litters are to treat it like clumping litter & remove peed-on litter, except that many cat owners only ever used clumping and expect that.
My experience with paper litter is that it controls odors well, so I see no need to scoop out litter that has only been peed on. This is especially true because paper is 3x’s more absorbent than clay litter, so removing litter that doesn’t smell and can still absorb urine is wasting the litter (and thus your money).
I came to this video because I’ve been using Okocat litter but am looking for a more economical brand.
When I first used the Okocat litter, I only used it in one box, because I wasn’t sure my cats would take to a litter that was different from all others I’d tried at that point.
For a while, I thought none of my cats were using it. No one was pooping in it. It may have been that only one of my 8 cats was using it, but it was one of my bigger male cats (who refuses to this day, unfortunately, to poop in a litter box because he associates doing so with the pain from IBD before he was diagnosed & successfully treated. I did eventually see him use the box with the Okocat paper litter). But at least one of my cats was very deliberate in peeing in one box and pooping in another, so multiple cats could have been using it.
I think it sat there for 3 months, and I never smelled a thing. I kept checking it by stirring it with a litter scoop, trying to figure out if it was being used.
Eventually, I just realized that the litter was heavier than it had been, and that’s how I realized it was being used & I changed it for sanitary reasons, but it never smelled at all.
I’d suggest using this exactly as you would have used non-clumping clay litter: scoop out solid waste & change it out completely before it starts to smell.
Since unlike clay, paper litter is super absorbent & odor isn’t an issue, I’d think a monthly change of the litter is fine if it doesn’t smell before then. But this is economical enough that you could change it out weekly as I used to have to do with clay litter - it depends on how many cats & boxes you have.
Aside from being better for the environment on its own, I’m no longer disposing of bags of clumped litter from a litter genie.

Thanks for this video - it was super helpful to me. My cat just had surgery and I’m having a really hard time telling where he Peed in the litter. I was starting to panic thinking that he wasn’t urinating at all, but after watching your video, and talking with my vet, I feel a bit better and think that I might just be having a hard time finding his pee!

Ive tried so many cat litters.
I finally settled for fusie cat clumping paper litter bcoz it is safe for my asthmatic cat and safe for the environment.
I really like it bcoz it is absorbent and easy to clean. It changes colour from white to blue whn it is contact w urine so this is very good for a neat freaks.
It can be added to a compose bin or flushed. I often try new litter but I always go bck to fusie cat paper litter.

Thanks so much for this video. We had to start using this litter after my cat had stitches in her private area and regular litter was sticking too much to her. She just had her stitches out and I'm trying to decide whether or not to keep using this litter. We had no idea how to scoop it when we first got it. So this video was kind of a sanity check to make sure we weren't missing something. I really like the idea that it doesn't track all over the house nor does it stick to My cat's private area as she has really long fur and is a bit overweight and has difficulty cleaning until can help her lose the weight. Thanks so much for the video!

I have also been on a newspaper litter journey for a week now. I have two tortoiseshell rescued cats who only use newspapers and this litter gave me a chance to transition them to a more scoopable litter. I have not hate it so far. I also bought the shredded paper one and that was is a big no no for us. The pellets are more owner-friendly and do a great job in odor control. Thank you for sharing your review. P.S.: True! Is really hard to spot the urine. I think I'm getting more accustomed each day that passes.

Hi, thanks for sharing! I have been using the paper litter for a few years. I like it for all the reasons you have mentioned. They recommended to fill with 3 to 4 inches, but I actually only fill a thin layer enough to cover the bottom of the litter box. It is easy to spot and scoop the used part. BUT... I am in transition to the pine litter for various reasons. I also watched your video about the pine litter. Thank you again for that!!!

There are a lot of ppl demo how it works on CZcams!

  • @ItsaCatsLife
    @ItsaCatsLife Před 8 měsíci

As cats will cover the soiled area with dry pellets after they pee, simply shake the tray back and forth, the unsoiled pellets will separate from the wet pellets making it easier to scoop only the wet litter. But obviously not immediately after the cat pees, the pellets need time to absorb and swell.
At the end of the day I still prefer the wood pellets, even though they can lead to 'wood dust' tracking around the litter box, but my three trays are in the enclosed patio (aka: Catio).

You should read up on clay litter vs soft wood litter. After I did, I will never go back to clay. It's not healthy for cats, or people to be breathing in when doing litter box cleaning. I'm glad there is natural litter out there now.

I doubt that this is hugely better ecologically than horse bedding because of how much processing is needed. Would it work with the three level litter box? The horse bedding disintegrates and you can just shake it through to the pan.

This was helpful to watch. I have two, 13 year old orange tabby cats. They have used pine pellets for over 10 years and I think there is no better way. However, one of my boys has developed a significant allergy to SOMETHING and is broken out in his groin areas and all four legs. He chews himself CONSTANTLY until he is raw. I have had 3 Vets tell me he is allergic to something and we are trialing every single diet with no luck. It occurred to me that he might have developed an allergy to the pine pellets. Thank you! I am fostering kittens and their previous foster gave me the rest of this litter because they were using it with them and I literally couldn’t figure out how to use this. I felt like I was scooping half of it up daily. It was bizzare. But your suggestion makes sense (even tho I think it would be gross to keep urine soaked paper for a week before fully dumping it out). I find it hard to scoop poop too because I end up tossing a lot of pellets away. I’m wondering if I should just put on a glove and hand pick the poop out lol. I am not a fan of this litter. But I’ll just use it for the fosters

I recently had to switch from Really Great Cat Litter, which I loved, because I have a new house rabbit who was eating the cat litter, and there's really no way to keep him away from the box while still allowing the cats to get to it. 😐 I opted for paper as the safest option, and safety comes first, but it's definitely less user-friendly. I think I'll buy this one. My cat is a heavy digger and clay sticks to her paws (reason why I never bought the clumping, scented and the crystal ones like pretty litter) I fear if I buy the wood ones the sawdust will also stick to her paws and she will end up eating it. She also sniffs so hard at the litter and since it's dusty I need to change it asap.

I've been testing out different litters with my kitten. I've tried the Breeder Cellect Paper litter this week, and I only used half the bag and had to go get other litter. It was too hard to work with. It's difficult to scoop up the soaked pieces and it's so light, it scattered everywhere. I tried the wood pellets and they were okay but you go through it so quick once it changes to saw dust. I've started using 'Worlds best cat litter' today and it's clumping perfectly but it's a little light and getting scattered. The search continues..

My newly adopted 10 yr old cat is having issues pulling out his fur and eating it. My Vet has checked him out and told me to watch to see if he stops this behavior. He uses the Garfield litter which is very fine like sand. He took to it quickly from the non clump clay litter I got from the shelter. I started to wonder if the litter was the cause. I'm transitioning him to Equisicat Pine Crumbles. I tried the cold turkey method and it was a fail,. He has two boxes - the one has Fuler's Earth in it that he likes even though it's pretty dusty. I mixed some of the Garfield litter with the pine crumbles and added Dr Elsey's litter attractant. He is slowly using the new stuff. It is very soft, tracks a little and he does seem to be scratching/pulling his fur out on belly and legs. I do like the crumbles.

The dealbreaker was having to gently sift around in the box trying to find not darker litter (gave up) but HEAVIER litter, which would indicate it was urine soiled.

It's really hard to sift because the pellets are so long, even with a quick sifter. I also had a hard time telling the wet pellets from the dry ones based on color and girth. The litter will start to stink to high heaven well before the pellets absorb enough urine to be get noticeably bigger than the dry ones. I switched back to Okocat wood mini pelllets. Those are infinitely better. They clump, naturally mask odor, and are much easier to sift.
