Love the videos Kyle. I bought my Tesla Model S 2014 P85D because you made everything look easy. I flew to Seattle from Des Moines Iowa to pick up the used car and drive it home. Everything went well except when I charged at my first supercharger, it locked up and the car wouldn’t charge until the car was linked to me and Tesla said it would be 3-5 days for that to happen. I happened to run into an employee that works at Tesla and he was able to help me link my car with Tesla in minutes. Something I don’t think I’ve heard anyone talk about on CZcams. 1900 miles was a breeze driving home thanks to you and your informative videos !!! I just retired from Law Enforcement and use the car every day on my daily commute to play golf. Best investment ever !!! Thanks again for what you do for all of us.

That charger in Clayton, NM will make it a breeze (pun intended). The drive from Colorado Springs to Austin for Fully Charged 2020 (February) was difficult. I had to do more of the New Mexico route (Las Vegas, NM, Santa Rosa, NM, etc) on that trip due to high winds and general range anxiety. I am not one to drive slow. That Clayton, NM charger can't come soon enough. I may be driving that way in the next month or so. I hope it is operational by then.

@EIon Musk That one in Clayton should fix that one gap. But we desperately need some between Dallas and Northwest Arkansas. Daughter goes to U of Arkansas. The route planner take you from Dallas to OKC then thru Tulsa. Which turns my 4.5 hour trip into 7+. Lot of folks from Dallas area have kids in school up there. And also go there for business in Bentonville with Walmart. But I had to take my ICE car to be able to have the range with my MYP. Love the car! But have that one travel gap that keeps me from using it for that trip.

Yes, there are many large wind farms here, in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. Lots of wind out here. Also in NM they are building large sun solar farms in the next few years. And lots of people have solar panels on their houses. NM is trying hard to be more green. And the government promised 50 more charging stations in the state next year.

Sorry Kyle, bad planning on the return trip. You should have made it to Dumas, TX. Dumas has hotels with destination chargers and you could have filled up while you slept. That would have taken 50 miles out of the trip to Trinidad.
You did not check PlugShare, where you would have found 14-50 outlets in Dalhart (free city park) and Ratón has a KOA you could use prior to going over Ratón pass (better a SLOW bit of juice over running out of battery in the middle of nowhere).
Clayton Supercharger will hopefully be open by the end of April. Unlike your comment, the Amarillo to Trinidad route is a busy route as it’s the gateway to Colorado for Dallas & Houston folks.

The Hampton in in Dumas, 45 miles north of Amarillo, has Tesla and J1772 chargers.
I live in the Dallas area and in normal years make the trip to Estes Park several times a year. Being in Texas and enjoying regular visits to wild places (Taos, Durango, Utah, the Ozarks, the Texas Hill Country) is why I drive a Chevy Volt. I'm sure I'm not the only one who loves EVs but has switched back to PHEVs. The 'unofficial speed limit' on Texas highways is 85mph and that isn't practical in EVs today with the current state of charging between cities. The run from Amarillo to Trinidad for example has numerous places to explore off the main road. The new administration has made expanding charging infrastructure a priority. Let's hope they are successful in that.

Glad to see you take that cut off from Amarillo to Trinidad. I did not want to chance it, and would not have made it. So we took the scenic route thru Las Vegas and Tucemcari. Figured out later that there were a couple of non Superchargers on that route that may have allowed us to limp thru. Yeah, it's a chicken and egg thing... they don't put charge stations where they are most needed and then claim they aren't needed because nobody could go that way if they wanted to. Then they put the fast chargers in metropolitan areas where people stupidly use them for daily charging instead of charging at home or work like they should. Then they wonder why EV adoption doesn't take off the way they think it should. It's less of a problem in the States and Europe, but in Australia the fast charging infrastructure still isn't even started yet. You're confined to a very few routes between the 5 eastern capitol cities and if you want to go anywhere else you're completely out of luck.

@@awo1fman - yes, out west it’s one thing (wide open spaces to cover), but this past spring I was able to make a round trip from Michigan to Florida in a non-Tesla using fast chargers exclusively. Northbound through Kentucky and top half of Ohio with cold temps and left front corner headwind made those areas a challenge.

@@dennislyon5412 The great thing about EVs is that if you're really determined nearly anything is possible. After all, if there's a house or building there's almost always electricity, and you can charge from any wall outlet. But most people aren't that determined and are in more of a hurry to get where they're going, and the average consumer wants to know they can just hop in and go anywhere, any time without having to plan charging stops or rely on the hospitality of strangers.

Be nice if the navigation system could tap into the internet for current wind speed and direction along the route. That information could be used to give a better near real time idea of the arrival percent remaining. On a recent trip, with a 40MPH head wind (guess), I chose to draft off three different big rigs over a 90 mile stretch instead of driving 45MPH on the interstate with traffic blowing by at 85MPH. I think drafting was safer than going 40MPH in this particular case (45MPH might be the lower legal limit on the interstate?). BTW, TACC with its radar made drafting very easy but I was very attentive at all times. Trucks draft off each other all the time. I am aware of the risks of drafting but sometimes you need weigh the risks.

Thank you for the video. It is starting to appear that 150 mile range for a Tesla 3 Performance driving in the western USA at 80 - 90 mph possibly up grade and into a head wind is the sweet spot of the range. That allows the car to be charged to less than 100%, better for the batteries, and not be run down to nail biting low charge in the single digit percent. I'm wondering if Tesla Model 3 suffers appreciably from energy loss due to faster discharge such as common with older lead-acid battery vehicles. With lead-acid batteries the vehicle uses less energy for going slower due to lower air resistance and other reasons, but sense the discharge rate is slower the batteries are significantly more efficient in turning their chemical energy into electricity than at faster discharge rates. The lithium batteries used in Teslas are not suppose to be subject to loss of energy at faster discharge rates typical for the car. I'm wondering if this is your experience. I'm not including the situation of repeated accelerations that would over heat the batteries where high battery temperature would cause loss of battery efficiency.

Kyle, based on your experience with the Taycan 4S and its ability to at least match its range rating at reasonably high speeds, do you think it could have completed that long stretch either direction? It’s pretty surprising that the Model 3 Performance fell that short of its rating, even considering the ambient conditions and 40 mph average for a good portion of it.

I made a trip where I pulled into the Trinidad, CO charger and...the entire area was out of power! There was a fairly large blackout due to a downed power line (very cold weather). It took four hours for the utility company to get power back on. So arriving at zero percent is a very risky method for travel, especially if you have family members with you. You do what you want for your video, but I would *never* recommend that approach.
