- Adventure is afoot! This week, we delve into the backcountry of southern Arizona in the 1991 Land Rover Defender 110 Hi-Cap. We put the truck through its paces as Shannon takes it out for a drive. I am left to my own devices at a local grocery store, and then spend a chilly February night under the stars in the bed of the Defender. The episode concludes in Coronado National Forest where I enjoy a tent site under some junipers.

There's something therapeutic about the subtle clacking of the diesel against the soft wind in those opening driving shots. No music, no monologue, just a man happy with his truck. Thanks for sharing.
Agree 100%
this might sound dumb, but this video really made me realize how easy it is to go camping if you really want to. Just grab a warm sleeping bag and some food and youre there. your content is once again making me binge each video man!
A lot of the overland Chanel's make you think you need so much more than you really do. I take week long trips in a Jeep TJ and 2 people and have a bunch of room to spare.
I know you love your orange Wrangler but this rig is so cool looking out on the trails. If you squint a bit you might be able to think you're in the Outback or Africa. Keep expecting to see lions, elephants, etc. ;-) This old goat has plenty of adventure left in her. Take your time getting the Wrangler back. I'm loving this "new" rig!
Have always loved Defenders……particularly this one. 👍
love that sweet old dog
P;ease give us a short video on the status of Orangie! Looking forward to more truck adventures
Chris you are the man. This bare necessities thing you are doing with the Defender is very refreshing. Best overland channel on the tube!
I suggest a tarp over the truck's cab and box... the slope will let the rain run off, maybe couple poles upright to push the tent up in the middle incase of wet weather. Cheap fix. Always carry rope and bungee cords with you.
What a cool truck!❤️ VENTURE4WD is one of my favorite channels. 👏👏👏👏👏
I really appreciate the slow camera panning. Makes for a much more enjoyable view. Thanks!
Seat Covers Needed ! ! !
You are officially the most unique overlanding channel on YT! Great video!
You should change over to flushable wipes, they are easier to store and you get much cleaner. The truck is looking good, starting to come together now. I hope to see you out on the trails around southern AZ.
Such a purpose built vehicle, I wish they still made things this well.
I really like your new used defender! It has tons of character and it sounds like a louder sewing machine! It’s very cool
That Defender definitely is no shopping mall parking lot cruiser posing as a wanna be off-road truck! Go Shannon! Love her spirit in wanting to drive it too!
Loved your video! And I got to admit I love the truck!! I can see why you are torn between keeping it and selling it. It will be nice to have Orangey back once he is all better.
Looks like you’re going to have a lot of fun with your defender.😎👍
Update on Orangie please?
If I remember correctly, Chris mentioned in a couple videos ago that he's waiting until the weather warms up to pick it up in Oregon.🤷♂️
Since Chris refuses to engage on YT, I will give you my two cents … my understanding is the Jeep has its new engine & is ready to go but it is in the PNW … and since Chris no longer shares his travel plans as he used to in the “original” format of Venture4wd, there is no telling when they will begin migrating that direction. They seem to be forever stuck in the Southwest … assuming due to the warmer climate during the winter … but hey, maybe when he needs to fill time since Venture4wd is now a two day max “adventure” channel, he will give a proper update …
That Land Rover is a great addition !! reminds of an old tv show I watched as a kid called Mutual of Omaha although not the same model it brings on nostalgic memories and inspires exploration
Lash down a tarp over the bed when you sleep. Maybe even make a few bows to give you some wiggle room. Love the Landy. Still can’t wait for Orangey to reappear. 😊
Definitely something different sleeping in the open nice looking forward to your new adventures. 👍👍😀🇨🇦🐕
always bring us along to the supermarket!Love this.Get to see what you need vs what you want, and how how pack everything!
Thoroughly enjoying you in the defender. It oozes adventure on another level. Awesome!
when you have a base camp like the Sprinter, that Land Rover would be an awesome explorer. As long as you have the nicer fall-back!
I think your new vehicle is wonderful. I love your adventures whether your in the jeep or your truck🤗🤗
This is absolutely cool, I have not seen your channel for about 5-7 weeks and now your driving a Land Rover! Nice!👍
The lady is born to drive Solihulls best!! Your spines wiil never be the same and you both will have that sun tan that only Land Rover drivers have!!
That rear tray is just begging for a Tarp or the like strung over it for some shelter. As an Aussie - I'm loving this new vehicle you've added (even if temporary) to the channel. That grand old beast has had a tough life and is still kicking on, and will do for a lot longer, they were built to last, not be pretty ;)
One of my initial thoughts was "A Land Rover, what are you nuts ?", as British cars are not known for reliability. This video has me changing my mind to "that looks like a lot of fun". Best of luck with it, Chris.
Landrover ... unreliable ... wait what?!?! Surely you aren't confusing this glorious machine for some suburban cowboys Range Rover or family car??
These have been used all over the roughest jungles, veldts, deserts and everything in between in Africa and Australia for decades. The Australian Army had them as their main transport vehicles, field ambulances, comms/command vehicles, tow vehicles etc from before Vietnam till the late 90's. The British Army used it just as long all over the world as well. That battered old Land Rover Chris is driving in this video will still be going long after Orangey gets replaced ;)
@@OldFellaDave - Yes LR's. I didn't state they were not superb off-road vehicles. They are, the 90 and 110 older Defenders are every bit as capable as a Jeep off road and are used all over the world for that reason. My comment was that British automobiles in general are not the most reliable vehicles in the world, the way Toyota's are thought of. Neither are Jeeps for that matter. I've owned British cars, expensive and frequent repairs. I'll take a tried and true Nissan Frontier any day (pre-2022) .
You give way to the animals lady, what a sweetheart you have there.
That "Oi" from Shannon directed at those cows was hilarious and very on brand for the Land Rover HiCap experience.
YES! -- was thinking the same thing :)
Oh man the new rig is epic! Absolutely love it… may have to look for something unique like that someday. It would be cool if you could get a custom truck tent for it. Or maybe a bed canopy/topper to sleep in!
Chris the peak you show at 11:45 is Picacho. You should go climb it. Having watched your channel for years, I'm sure you'll like it!
Always love your videos! Way to reenchant the channel with a fresh new start!! Have you thought of getting a big bushcraft tarp to put over the bed somehow during rain??
Wonderful video!!! Love the Defender.
It reminds me of my Toyota 76 land cruiser, very capable!
Good video Chris . You have it covered from one end to the other . Glamping to ruffing it . When you get a chance you should replace the wheel studs on the truck ,with longer ones . I am sure you know that good practice is to have at least half the thickness of the nut sticking out . Thanks
Nice view of “The Lonely Mountain” and the sunsets are always stunning. Have you had any Hobbit sightings? The tent seems like a good choice for needed warmth and win shelter. As always your commentary and photographer’s eye are entertaining. Thanks again for taking me along.
double the coffee in the AeroPress, then add hot water to the mug to top it off ..... it'll do ya goood !!!
This is one of my favorite ways to use the aeropress. Also works good if you need to make 2 cups fast.
Chris, ditch the sway bars, you dont need them on a vehicle like this imho, it will ride and flex much better.
Another underwhelming video. The magic is gone. I wonder when your supporters figure it out too. Sad to see this once great channel go to pieces.
That truck looks so much fun to drive. I have a Jeep Gladiator and pull a small trailer for cold weather conditions (like the snow last weekend). However, I want to do some of this minimalist overland camping when the weather is nice. Happy Valentines Day, Chris and Shannon!
So many ironies about the "royal paper" toilet paper. Also, if you donthe right ratio in the aero press you make an Americano like coffee by adding water to it to get more volume.
That truck is so cool 😎
You need another bed canister exclusively for cheez its, that would be awesome.
That 200tdi should hustle down the road just fine. It may just need some love.
Chris you should consider getting a MTB or EMTB. You could go bike packing with that minimalist setup ! Those roads would be perfect for the EMTB! I’m always out exploring the mountains here in east tn / west nc. The e bike lets me get way out there and down the smaller tight tracks ! I think you’d love it.
A bivy bag would work great in the pick-up bed! Check those out.
Guy traded the Jeep for a real Heep. It almost looked like he actually slept in the bed of the truck. Almost.
The Aeropress does make a good cup of coffee!!! But I have the same issue of it not making enough. What I do is just put enough coffee in the press to make enough for me 24oz tumbler. Then, I just fill and press it 3 times to fill up my cup. It is definitely worth considering doing that. It has become my go to coffee maker because it seriously makes the BEST coffee. And super easy to clean
Make a stronger concentrate and then just add more water when it's in your cup.
you should put a beefy radio in there so you can talk to home base if you dont have a signal
GMRS RADIOS works great for a two way radio. I have a Midland MXT 285. Works great in my Rzr 900 Trail 50. A MXT 500 for home base.
Now you just need a Mic Dundee outfit and speaks with the accent when you're out on the trail. Folks would love it!
AT 8:45 I could almost hear Marlin Perkins voice in my head . Usually saying something like I'll wait in the truck while Jim wrestles this lion to the ground .
Packing water that is in plastic containers in with 90% of your dry goods is risky business. Those jugs could easily rode in the passenger floor board in a cardboard box, plastic storage bin, or other applicable containment device.
Chris, great video. Would love to see some drone shots of the places you visit/stay.
For more coffee from the Aeropress when you turn it over and place on top of the cup remove the plunger and let it self drain for a bit and then add more water. Can still press if you want froth. I use a metal filter as well, lot less mess. Cheers
That's what I do. And I fill my mug first with water and then pour back into the pot to boil. That way I have exactly the amount of water to boil that I need.
I know your Jeep broke down and I think I watch every post you put up on here but is the Jeep dead? Is that why you bought the pickup? I thought I remembered you saying you were fixing the Jeep and it so, why did you buy the pickup?
The Jeep has been ready to go for a couple of weeks already. I think Chris bought this old truck thinking the Jeep would be sidelined for months and he needed a quirky 4x4 for video content. I guess he's got to make some money off of his investment and any sponsorships he may have entered into with that vehicle. The Landrover will probably require a new gearbox or a differential in a few weeks so I guess we'll just have to wait until that happens and the Jeep can return to its rightful place
Shannon brings fun to the content. The Defender is an awesome add.
Thanks for the 20 minute timer.....lol
I love the open bed. I used to rig a tarp from the cab of my old Silverado to a couple of kayak paddles. Would actually be a perfect setup with something like the Slumberjack Roadhouse Tarp. Less is more!
When you're ready, head to the southeast towards the Chiricahuas. The area I think you visited with the Tim and Kelsey of Dirt Sunrise. The truck will love going over the Piney Road too. An easy drive so be sure to take some of the off shoots. FYI, best boon docking is on the eastern side of the pass before you get into the Cave Creek area. Enjoy our desert!
🇺🇸 Chris is gain some weight! Life must be good! I'd wish they send the Land Cruiser truck to the states. I really like the square face of the old LR. Parts is going to be the issues.
Weight gain is a sign of a sedentary lifestyle, ie adventure is a thing of the past.
@@jjjeee346 LOL. New gf is feeding him well. Soon he will need a F450 for the extra payload.
How many turns in that steering wheel. 😂
Really enjoying this truck series, thanks for the content!
A snorkel on a vehicle in the Arizona desert, that always makes me laugh! The last time that would have possibly been necessary, in that area , was 1982 or 83!
Snorkels help with dust, as well. I am sure that that snorkel has served this HCPU well over the last 30 years.
Snorkle are used 60% for dust, 30% for looks, and 10% for deep water.
@@insaynbcr 100% "looks" on 99% of vehicles installed on.
Amazing adventure, amazing landscapes. I love it.
Did you actually purchase this relic or they just gave it to you to open up some space in their lot? 🤣😂🤣
How timely. Neil Young made an appearance.
For a guy who is supposed to be prepared for anything while living out of your truck, how is it you find yourself in the backcountry without a flashlight??.A knife,a flashlight,a first aid kit and a way or two to make fire are prerequisite for EVERY prepared individual-come to think of it,a good quality fighting pistol and a couple spare mags are also prerequisites!
Hey Chris, it is nice seeing you out enjoying your new classic ride. Love the single cab offroad pickup and wish American manufacturer's would offer them for sale. Thanks for sharing your adventures and looking forward to seeing more.
I take some go pro footage and wonder what I'll do with it and it never surfaces, Chis shops for toilet paper and I'm interested,, lol
Do you have a portable compressor to air back up? Also you might be able to pitch a small, one person tent in the bed with the tailgate down for some additional shelter if needed.
Left rear light out Chris
Who cares?
Paint it Orange, and keep this one!!! :)
Love the new ride. Sure win and fun to watch! Keep on truckin.
That is one loud engine.
Hey buddy cook a breakfast burrito that makes for a great start to your day
Tip: After your ‘Mountain House’ or what ever meal has rehydrated for it’s 10-20 minutes just cut the top half of the bag off, makes it much easier to eat and no need to dirty a dish. Your welcome.
I didn’t realize our vintage Landrovers could draw so much love!!
Got me looking at 30 year old Land Rovers now 😂
Hello Chris, is there any type of story or history behind the blue and white stripes on your truck? They are really growing on me, and a cool story would be the topping on the cake for that awesome truck!
HI CHRIS 👋
THAT VIEW WAS BREATHTAKING AT CAMP ! GLAD TO SEE YOU BOTH OUT & ABOUT . NO MATTER NEW OR OLD OR MODEL THEY ALL HAVE THEIR LITTLE QUIRKS ! THANK YOU 🙏 BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨
Went to your Amazon store looking for the bike intercom, I only saw the bicycle helmets. Are the interiors on your Amazon store, if so what tab. Thanks for always sharing you life stories.
back to basic chris
Wow, absolutely loving the Defender.
good looking rig, needs some sound deadening though for sure.
What a beautiful area to get out into the backcountry and camp! Love your variety of videos. When I make aeropress coffee I make it a little more concentrated and top up with hot water in the cup….americano style.
At least the old girl will stop rusting there.
You almost lost they axel cam with a big rock flying up.
Maybe put a piece of duct tape over the bolt heads in your box to reduce the possibility of working a hole in the WTR bottle or damaging other gear. Looks good!
If you ever sell that Defender please let me know! I am a Land Rover freak and could use that truck in my life!
Shoot me a message. My shop up in Utah would be happy to give you a little
Bit more power out of that 200 TDI. We’ve been importing these trucks for years. The 200 can certainly do 70 with ease.
Love the old Landrover. I had a 130 single cab about 30 years ago myself. On a side note, could you not say “ hey Siri “ in the video, it trips everyone’s devices off🤣
I'm thinking the Jeep may be history. That's a fine piece of vintage 4x4.
Great video Chris...
Nothing better than the chug of a diesel.
Might have a taillight out..
Great video, Chris! Your shakedown cruise of the Defender Ute off-road was well done!
I had a 1966 109 Land Rover pickup that had a shell. I turned it into a comfortable camper. It is to say you are roughen it. A home made camper might be a option?
Why not put one of those caps that are just the frame and tent material ? Cheap and light.
Get rid of the box on the front and use storage containers that go over the wheels in the bed so you can lay down in the bed under the cap.
J402UAW. Would have been registered between 01 August 1991 31 July 1992 'J' prefix. In Shrewsbury area UK. I'm surprised that the front plate is still allowed, but maybe US rules are different. Just got to watch for galvanic corrosion as frame is steel and body panels aluminium. With the camping, maybe get a tarp or something to cover the bed. This might keep a bit of heat in and wind out.
Arizona does not require a front plate. You can run whatever you want on the front.
@@dalestuart1029 Oh I see. What about other states? I'm not sure whether Chris intends to keep the LR though once the Jeep comes back.
