- Talk with Michael Parkinson and as second guest Tom Hanks. Bowie performs "Everyone says "HI"" from the album "Heathen" and "Life on Mars" in the show (with Mike Garson at the piano).
About the song "Life on Mars" and the link to Frank Sinatra: When released as a single in 1973, it reached number three in the UK and stayed on the chart for thirteen weeks. In 2015 Neil McCormick, chief rock music critic of "The Daily Telegraph", ranked it as number one in his "100 Greatest Songs of All Time" list. In 1968 Bowie wrote the lyrics "Even a Fool Learns to Love", set to the music of a 1967 French song "Comme d'habitude", composed by Claude François and Jacques Revaux. Bowie's version was never released, but Paul Anka bought the rights to the original French version, and rewrote it into "My Way", the song made famous by Frank Sinatra in a 1969 recording on his album of the same name. The success of the Anka version prompted Bowie to write "Life on Mars" as a parody of Sinatra's recording. In notes for a Bowie compilation CD that accompanied a June 2008 issue of "The Mail on Sunday". Bowie described how he wrote the song: "Workspace was a big empty room with a chaise longue; a bargain-price art nouveau screen ('William Morris,' so I told anyone who asked); a huge overflowing freestanding ashtray and a grand piano. Little else. I started working it out on the piano and had the whole lyric and melody finished by late afternoon." Bowie noted that Wakeman "embellished the piano part" of his original melody and guitarist Mick Ronson "created one of his first and best string parts" for the song. The liner notes for Hunky Dory indicate that the song was 'inspired by Frankie'. One reviewer suggested the song was written after "a brief and painful affair" with actress Hermione Farthingale. While on tour in 1990, Bowie introduced the song by saying "You fall in love, you write a love song. This is a love song." (Source: Wikipedia)

When he said he felt like he didn’t become who he really was supposed to be until 10-15 years ago at that time, I realized how true that was, based on how he carried himself in all of his other interviews. He just seemed so happy and positively humorous in this part of his life. Of course he graced us with smiles and laughter prior to the 90s, but there was always an air of loneliness and seriousness to him. I’m glad David Bowie was able to find true happiness later on in his life (a big thank you to Iman). :)

I've nothing but adoration for him. Charming, funny, self-depreciating, unequivocal talent... and I just love how he loved his wife and children. A true legend, living on forever in millions of hearts.

Bowie was the soundtrack to so many boomers' lives. A chameleon but always recognisable. An artist who was accessible to all and a legend in his lifetime and beyond. Sorely missed.

+Christine Nichols That is actually my favourite poem. It's so true. I remember working with a child psychologist who had this poem on the wall of his office. And another poster with the lyrics of an Alice Cooper song, (I know, of all people!) which I can't remember, something about children and parents. We are all definitely products of our childhoods, Larkin hit the nail right on the head.
Some people become famous because of their looks, some because of their talent, some charisma Bowie had all three in buckets.
It's lovely how Parky acknowledges him at the very end. He shakes his hand, puts his other hand on top of David's and simply smiles and nods at him. 100% genuine. Lovely to watch this, thanks for the upload.
His imitation of Mick Jagger is hilarious. He was so talented.
He was just so lovely. It was nice having an older person interview him that let him talk. I see him on CZcams interviewed in the 80s and 90s by so many younger people who cut him off and jump from one question to the next without hearing the answer. It is funny though because sometimes he wouldn't care and would keep going on the initial answer anyway. Just a great insightful man and, oh yes, an unbelievable artist!
I grew up with confrontational interviewers...like Barbra Walters and Matt lauer. The style of interviewing in the late 80s and onward is to humiliate your guest almost...bring up controversial issues and sometimes it may be appropriate if your interviewing ted Bundy.
IV been watching a lot of interviews from the 70s and early 80s with David Bowie and John Lennon and the interviews are a lot different.
Mostly it seems like listening to a private conversation..the interviewers seem actually interesting in the responses and mostly they listen and seem genuinely interested in their guest.
That has changed so much into just interrupting and hurrying the guest up and nothing seems genuine...and the disrespect to the guest is unreal.
Please, I'd love some link to these kind of interviews? Parkinson was a little different. He wasn't overawed etc by 'stars' and obviously had honed his craft, just as Bowie had his technique when being interviewed. Naive to think Bowie wasn't somewhat 'performing' here however nice and pleasant he came over.
@@leeannasloan526 maybe that's just a mainly a American thing? We don't have any really serious chat shows in the UK now. Most are commercially driven and rather boring, where even an interesting guest doesn't get the time. It's a different era

Seems crazy that this fantastic show was almost 20 years ago. R.I.P. always, David Bowie. You brought an amazing dynamic array of wonderous music to the world throughout your entire career.
Seemingly so sincerely honest, aware, engaging, unafraid to admit his own faults with good humor. And his song Everyone Says Hi is great. It may be one of his most straight forward pop songs - in fact the lp is was on Heathen is very good and for me the trilogy of lps Heathen, Reality and Earthling is gaining more respect everyday. His greatness seems to only enlarge as more time passes.
Rated highly as a rock star but often totally unfairly underrated as a singer. David I so love you......
So true. And such a dazzling array of 'tricks'. Bass, baritone, tenor / amazingly creative use of accents etc. For me, he tops the list. Even better than prime Sinatra.
@@blackmore4 He had a great ear and vocal facility - he could manipulate his sound for the effect he wanted. He really had a great voice. His voice was pretty well preserved too - when you hear singers like, say, Frank Sinatra, at the end of their careers you realize how good his later singing really was - especially since he smoked like a fiend for decades, and was pushing 60!
He was so beautiful, not just to listen to or look at. He was beauty.

I can't blame Tom Hanks if he used his celebrity to remain on set after David came on stage. I would have done the same for a chance to be next to Bowie during his interview. It must have been terribly interesting.

He sure was charming....just one of a kind. God must have broken the mold after creating him. He had such a sense of humor, too.

Shortly after 1:25 the slight nod to someone in the audience, just so perfect and the epitome of class, dignity, warmth. Nothing about Bowie was "off" in sincerity. RIP dear soul.
His vocals are masterful then he sits and talks as if nothing had just happened. He frequently said he didn’t believe he could sing well. I’ve always loved his voice and his widely varied musical style. It’s a great thing that he didn’t stay with only one phase of his many personas. This is worth watching a few times in a row. ‘Everyone Says Hi’ David Bowie’s wonderful letter to his deeply missed friend Marc Bolan. It was released on Marc’s birthday, what a wonderful tribute.
I think you are right to say it is a letter to Marc but it was not on Marc's birthday, but released on the 25th anniversary of Marc's death (16th September, 1977).
Thank you timtak 1, I stand corrected. I had seen David in an interview at the time, and he said it was for Marc and the importance of the release date, but I had mistakenly remembered it as being Marc’s birthday. Anyway thank you.

John Smith he gave the best interviews for 30 years straight. Parkie's just as much of a British royalty as Bowie was. I was torn when the man retired and the show went off air .

I had the misfortune of meeting Parkinson once. He is not a nice man.
He was appearing at a literature festival at the town hall where I worked. He spoke to the photographer from the local paper like he was dirt, and then, when he noticed I was looking in his direction, clearly tried to outstare me (a bizarre experience, to have such a famous person acting in such a childish way towards me, and the first and only time anyone's tried to outstare me since primary school).
My colleagues had similar experiences of him. Not a nice guy.

I've always thought I'd sooner have a conversation with David Bowie than listen to one of his concerts, because he was intelligent, witty, charming, well-informed, self-deprecating, humble and refreshingly honest. On the other hand I don't always like his music or his voice. However, on this occasion his singing was excellent and in particular his rendition of Life on Mars was sensational. A major influence in rock and pop during his lifetime and since.
So glad he came to find love, and another chance to be a parent and that sense of finding himself. What a body of work we had the privilege to watch as he was engaged in the search. And that last dark album reaching in and outward, raging against the coming night.
It was interesting to me, I always had a great respect for Tom Hanks, but I find, in David Bowies company, Hanks was stuck for words...a very interesting interview. NO Auto tune here, what an amazing voice! SO sad he is gone :(

Michael Parkinson was such a wonderful interviewer. He always put the interviewee at ease. Which made for interviews such as this. A little piece of magic. Such an extraordinary interview. Relaxed, hilariously funny, insightful, unassuming. Bowie was so special.
Parkinson was great,he just asked the questions and then sat back to listen,unlike the likes of modern interviewers like Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross who constantly interrupt and are more intent on being the star of the show themselves.
@@mjh5437 I can't agree with your Graham Norton opinion. Norton, although very different to Parky, has a unique gift at getting all his guests involved at the same time and making them feel comfortable enough to come out with some chat show gold! I think he encourages stories out of them, rather than interrupting.
I was lucky enough to meet him once, in 1973 I think, at the pier just before he sailed on the QE2. So warm, humble, genuine.
He knew how to answer dull, often repeated questions with deeply engaging flair.
I listened to Everyone Says Hi every day in the last few weeks of my brother's battle with cancer. It still brings tears to my eyes. Cancer took Bowie from the world in January 2016, cancer took my brother from our family in August 2016 and canine cancer took my beautiful Siberian Husky Nikki from me in December 2016. Cancer sucks!
