ASUS TP401MA VivoBook Flip 14 - SSD Upgrade
Vložit
- čas přidán 8. 09. 2024
- The ASUS TP401MA is a budget laptop that includes an empty M.2 slot for a SATA III SSD.
UPDATE 2024 @jwkelsall56 reports that NVMe now works as of the 2022 model. YMMV.
UPDATE: I tested with an HP EX920 512GB. The TP401 doesn't support PCIe NVMe drives.
The text version of this is at computerrescue...
Steps:
1. Remove bottom case
2. Disconnect battery
3. Install SSD (with 2mm x 3 screw)
- I used WD Blue 250 GB WDS250G2B0B (about $75)
4. Clone drive
5. Extend partition
6. Set boot priority in BIOS
Speed test! Enjoy! Don't wreck your feet!
The ASUS TP401MA performs really well out of the box, with a Pentium N5000 processor and 4GB of DDR4. Touchscreen with pen support, thin-light design, FHD screen, USB C, bluetooth, good keyboard, fingerprint reader, makes it a perfect little machine for non-gamers like me. I just needed more space than the 64GB eMMC provides.
It's available (in Canada) at microsoft.com - www.microsoft....
It's also on the US site for substantially less money. :(
Thanks for this guide. Giving back to the community, here are the details of my successful upgrade. 1. System Model VivoBook_ASUSLaptop TP401MAS_J401MA 2. Just 2 out of 4 rubber feet had screws. It was tough getting under the rubber feet and they did end up peeling off. But they seem to stick back. 3. For the same 70ish CAD I got a 500GB WD Blue 500 GB SATA SSD M.2 2280 (Sept 2024) Moore's Law at work lol. 4. For cloning EASEUS seems to charge so I went with Macrium reflect trial. No credit card required. If purchased it is just a one-time cost. 5. To access the UEFI (BIOS) it is F2. Make sure to hold it down before pressing the power button 6. I placed my computer on aluminum foil that directly touched the kitchen floor. Then used the foil for baking chicken in the oven to celebrate lol. simple cheap solution for grounding. 7. For my model I couldn't disconnect the battery, it was too delicate. I risked it (disclaimer: no guarantees)
Details before adding 500 GB: OOTB drive was a mere 58 GB. Windows 11 21 H2. i was unable to upgrade to windows 11 23H2 due to lack of space. I have 19 GB but update manager fails. I tried using a external SD card but windows doesnt like FAT. I didnt try reformatting to NTFS. Adding SATA was way better.
Nice tutorial, just a few steps missing though. After installing the ssd, the laptop didn't recognize the new ssd until I went into disk management and initialized it. Then had to create new volume on the ssd. Then I just followed the rest of the tutorial.
Thanks for adding that Chris. :)
OMG, extremly detailed tutorial! Thank's a lot!
you sounded like the narrator in battle field 2, btw awesome video it helped me
Thank you so much I did it with a terabyte now I have so much space
Big thanks Noise in the Office! Very helpful and concise. I used Macrium Reflect to clone then had to use Mini Partition to deal with making the C partition larger... couldn't do it in Windows Disk Management (both have free versions). Reflect allowed me to clone without needing to format it first in W Disk Man. also. Cheers again
Great job on this video. Followed step by step and it worked just as you said. Thank you very much!
Thanks Deb.
@@noiseintheoffice I tried this and my pc is not detecting the SSD at all anywhere both via bios, disk management and under This PC. Pls help.
Thank you! Your instructions were very clear and you gave me the confidence boost I needed to buy a Vivobook and save some money.
Thanks, your tutorial worked great. Clear and concise with great clarity in the audio. Thanks for posting, it is very appreciated .
Followed your video step by step... flawless... thankyou, much better than any owners manual
Thank you very much for sharing this installation process, I will try soon on my vivobook flip 14 TP401NA bought in France, Michel, A6A10
Bonjour @Michel Vair, I am also planning to buy this laptop in France but I am confused. Is this computer slow? How is the performance of N5000? Does N5000 support WD M.2 SATA III 500Go or is it limited to 250Go? waiting for your suggestion. Merci par avance :)
Excellent, it's working using HIKVision E100N Series Solid State Drive 512 GB
Once all the screws are out, you can pop the lid open using an old, full size sim card. Stick it long-ways into the seam adjacent to the right hinge and you should be able to get enough leverage from the hinge to pop it open there, without scratching anything. Once it's open there, you can use your fingers to go around and open it the rest of the ways. My fingernails weren't able to get it started.
Used disked genius it’s free to do the copy. Kinda not satisfied with the speed but ig it’ll do for now.
Might try a MacBook just need more battery life a better performance unless the zenbook 14 is better
Thank you very much this is very helpful
Thanks for the clear instructions.
Where is the RAM slot if I want to add RAM at the same time as SSD.
I took the cover off but can't see a slot for a RAM module.
Thanks !
Hey. Did you find it? I don't think this device has one
Thank you, awesome instruction!
Thank you for the video. My mom managed to add an SSD by following your instructions! I just wanted to add that you don't have to unplug the battery to do this, just be carefull.
NVMe also worked in mine. SATA did not. in my J401MA - intel celeron
To find out about your device go to: Windows > Device Manager > Storage Controller WILL SAY SATA OR NVME CONTROLLER
installed Samsung Evo 970 Plus 500GB but performance is poor. less than 1GB/s in Crystal Disk Mark
SAMSUNG nvme read: seq1m q8t1 :902 mb/s seqt1 q1t1 :665 mb/s rnd4k q32t1 :140 mb/s rnd4k q1t1 :32 mb/s

EMMC read : 314 / 300 / 42 / 12
write : 42 / 41 / 30 / 25
i tried this SSD update on a 303 bios version without success. BIOS default shows to SATA and AHIC. Which version of bios works or is there something i'm missing??
I have the latest iteration called TP401MARB manufactured 11/2021. FYI, it still doesn't have an NVMe controller. As one other user pointed out, it would be listed under storage controllers in Device Manager if it did, like on my Odroid H2+.
Thank you for this tutorial, is it required to clone and change boot priority? or can I just extend? what are the benefits or consequences?
One reason I used this drive was to improve boot and app loading speed. If you boot from the new drive, boot time and app load time will be reduced.
Hi, great video! The TP401MAR I bought, manuf. 5/2021 - has PCIe 2.0, not SATA III, and has 4GB RAM on board, not upgradeable. (CPUID CPU-Z identifies everything)
That's great info, thanks! So it will take advantage of PCIe speed
Hi first of all very helpful video removes hesitation on the viewer's part
Question - Is there any workaround for PCIe NVMe drives? Because I already bought it.
do you solve the problem with nvme? I bought a ssd for my girlfrien to with 2T. I cloned a lot of disk in my life, but this time the new ssd would not be recognized.
@Loop no i spent countless hours searching net and trying linux and windows with different settings . However, i have ordered a SATA 3 and will get back to you with as they say in french " les résultats "

The laptop you updated the HD. I wonder, is RAM upgradable in this PC? I have the same PC for my daughter. I have upgraded HD and need to upgrade the RAM as well.
Please confirm. Thanks in advance.
No, RAM is SOIC, soldered to the mainboard. So it's impractical to try to upgrade.
Very good tutorial, I can't get the under of the conputer open. My guy in the video just put his finger in and opens it like nothing 😭
Hi team, good topics. I have bought WD 250 Go blue ssd , but I cannot see it on windows or on bios. I Have the latest bios version 301. I don't know how to do now. Any suggestions? Regards Nicolas

Hello noiseintheoffice,
thanks for that brilliant video. I have a 'oversize' laptop with 18,4" and a normal size Android tablet. But I wanted to have sth. smaller. And as well a Win "tablet". So I started looking around for 2-in-1's or convertibles. But in Germany the 11" or 13" sizes all just hold 4GB Ram and I wanted 8GB Ram. I ended up getting a used (2 year old) ASUS TP401N. Lucky me, since I came across your video.
Everything is just the way you described it, so great.
I just ordered the 1TB WD blue, because I want to put my MP3's and more on there.
Which version of the EASEUS to do software is it you were using?
I found the 11.5, it seems to look slightly different from the looks in your video.
So I am awaiting the 1TB now, so I can "mod" the sweet 14" convertible.
Greets,
Julia
Thank you Brother
Nice. I will do this on my son's laptop. Do you have a tutorial how to change the battery?
I will prefer new windows installation when you change hard drive it will help for prevent of any blue screen error in future
Very helpful tutorial. Can you advise me: should I initialize the new disc with GPT or MBR in order to transfer my operating system and other files to it?
Hello there! So will it handle a 512 or a 1tb ssd? If so what exactly do i need to look for? Thanks this video is awesome!!
I try a 512 and the PC doesn't recognized it...it doesn't appear in hard disk management...then, i think that the PC can't be up by more than 256go
Thanks for the vid, it was very helpful 👍
I have Asus TP401MAR (you can use MyAsus app to get details about your model).
I've bought WDS500G2B0B - the same SSD with bigger capacity. But it's doesn't work unfortunately, not compatible.
UPD: After that I've bought WDS250G2B0B - and it's also didn't recognize by system. I've made a clone of my Windows OS, so both of the disks was initialized.
Probably will try WDS500G3B0B (WD Blue SA510) as John bellow advised.
Max, I just did this with a WDS500G3B0B (WD Blue SA510) successfully fyi. 500 isn't the issue... the G2 might be a PCIe NVME which isn't supported. I found this out by putting an old one I had sitting around in... no joy. Need an M2 sata.
@@John-yl6pb Good news, thanks man, I will try. What index of the model do you have btw? TP401.......?

@@maxmirzoev1280 Hi Max, I have the same asus tp401MAR, i was wondering if you tried to upgrade it with a NVME ssd, or any other method to successfully upgrade the storage
Can you also make a video show how to upgrade ramRAM for this laptop ?
Sorry, RAM is not upgradeable, due to it being soldered directly to the mainboard.
Ram soldered on...not upgradeable.
Hello, would it be pretty much the same for the ASUS TP410UA or does that model not include the special port for the SSD? Also, I know you might not even be monitoring this anymore, but others might see and know, would I be able to replace the 1T HDD the unit currently has with a 500GB SSD and the. Just use the 1T HDD as an external?!? thanks again for the video :)
I saw a video about upgrading M2 SSD on this laptop, but it seems to be gone:/ Anyway, it was a pretty complicated procedure that included fliping over the mainboard, as the M2 slot is pretty well hidden. I actually have this model and want to uprade the RAM that sits nearby, so if I succeed I may get back to you:D
Anyway, there's another option: if you have a HDD you have a 2.5" SATA slot so you can just replace the HDD with 2.5" SSD. Just make sure to clone your hard drive beforehand.
Great video. Thank you. Question... I'm in computer management and when I follow your instructions to extend volume, I get an error saying that the basic disk will be converted to dynamic disk which will not allow the starting of the OS from any volume except the current boot volume... Do I want to continue??? What should I do at this point? Thank you in advance!!
I have the same lap top
Sorry to bother you, I cloned my data onto the SSD but I haven’t been able to change it in bios. Is it safe to clear the SSD to try again?
Very helpful sir, ordered my tp401ma and waiting it to arrive. Wd green sata ssd seems cheaper than blue ones. I wonder did the ssd affect the battery life?
It didn't have any affect that I've noticed. Green is a little lower performance than Blue but has a better price point. Green should still outperform the onboard 64GB storage.
@@noiseintheoffice got mine recently. It didn't come with the stylus. Does stylus from asus transformer book work on this one?
Got my tp401ma and installed a wdgreen m2 sata ssd in it. The benchmark speed is almost as fast the blue one, with write speed slightly slower. Its cheaper tho
Hi, Nice video, the best. Once the new SSD is installed what happen to the old one? Do I need to take it off?? Thank you.
No, the old one is attached to the board so cannot be removed. I retained for possible use as archive space. But you can just ignore it.

After looking more into the specifications, I have found an SSD that might be compatible with this laptop. It has SATA ||| & M.2. Please let me know if it is compatible with this laptop. Thanks.
thank for the upgrade info. how bright is the screen ?
I don't have a way to measure that. I can say that, in my experience it is bright enough in a brightly lit room, but not enough in full daylight; I've never had one that is though.
Okay, PCIe drive is on the way to test it's compatibility with the TP401!
I'll update when it comes in. *UPDATE:* PCIe does not work on this model. The slot will accept it, but the system doesn't recognize it.
Did it work?
@@bryankeltonadams It did not. The TP401's M.2 slot fits a PCIe drive, but won't recognize it. The BIOS also doesn't support UEFI.

I am using a NVME ssd intead of a SATA ssd. Will it still be compatible?
Because I'm pretty sure M.2 is all that is needed.
Okay, now I have to write my whole comment all over again because previously, CZcams failed at uploading it.
First of all, thanks a lot for the great tutorial, which was extremely helpful for me since I have never installed an SSD and all the more, since I want to buy this exact device. What a nice coincidence because it seems to be a decent device but not hyped as much as Macbooks or the latest Huawei ultrabooks.
However, I still have two questions and I'd be so happy if you were so kind to give me your opinion on them:
(The following questions both refer to the same Asus device you're working on in the tutorial)
1) I wondered whether I could also install the following Samsung SSD instead of the one you used:
www.amazon.de/Samsung-MZ-V7S250BW-Plus-Interne-3-500/dp/B07MHXYL6T/ref=cm_wl_huc_item
As far as I can see, the Samsung SSD has got an M.2 format (2280) but I couldn't find out whether it's SATA-type. In the Amazon specs, it says 'Interface: PCIE x 4'.
However, as I am new to this field I have no clue whether it is technically possible to install the Samsung NVMe SSD and I haven't smartened up by reading Amazon reviews or searching on Google :(
2) By now, I have opened my previous Samsung Ultrabook only thrice and only in order to clean it, which worked pretty well apart from ripping apart two dents of the bottom shell while opening it (it was made of plastic). I wouldn't exactly describe myself as intellectually challenged but I do respect your skills and presumed experience. That's why I fear screwing things up in an instance if I were to install the SSD into a brand new device, although in your video, it doesn't seem to be too tricky at all. Hence, my question: Is there anything else -apart from disconnecting the mainboard from the electricity supply - I could possibly screw up? How do I know which side of the SSD has to look up or down, respectively?
Again, thanks a lot for the video. Even if you cannot find the time to answer, your tutorial has helped me a lot :) But if you brought yourself to answer my questions, that would be sublime :D
Hello Javier.
1) Regrettably, the Samsung 970 EVO has a PCIe interface. The TP401 specifies a SATA III interface. The 860 EVO would be the correct fit: www.amazon.de/Samsung-MZ-N6E500BW-860-EVO-Interne/dp/B078WQC2GQ/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1553543868&sr=1-6&keywords=samsung%2B860%2Bevo&th=1
2) You should be safe in doing the upgrade so long as you disconnect the battery, and touch that metal chassis to equalize the static charge.
The drive will fit in the slot only one way, label up.
Thanks for your question!
@@noiseintheoffice Wow thanks, now, that's what I call a fast answer! Just one last question: In the video you said that it's theoretically possible to install a PCIe SSD as well, right? Because on Amazon the Samsung product description reads “suitable for top-performing PCs and Ultrabooks“. Of course, this convertible isn't exactly what this sentence refers to but at least it is an Ultrabook :D So, I would consider contacting ASUS support to clearify that if you said that there might be a tiny chance that a PCIe SSD could work. I'll let you know what they answered :)
@@alsa8601 Sure! That would be great. I got no information when I chatted with them in that regard, but maybe you'll have better success. :)
@@alsa8601 Testing with a PCIe drive indicates that the M.2 socket doesn't support it, although it fits mechanically. They mustn't have connected the lines from the PCI bus to the M.2 socket. The BIOS also doesn't have options to support NVMe drives. :(
The J401MA indeed has a discrete Wifi card that can be removed.
I know this was done a while ago but can you tell me where you got your new ssd and what can be the max that would be best without issues. I need to upgrade mine badly, and the windows updates just make it worse.

Mine is the Pentium Silver 5000, but that shouldn't affect detecting the drive. I had to update my bios to get Windows to detect it. If that still doesn't work, see if Disk Management lists it. It may just need to be set up.
@@noiseintheoffice I finally figured out why the SSD couldn’t be detected. I installed a different SSD with a single slot (NVMe). It worked. One thing though. The easeus software for cloning is not for free. I had to purchase a key product.

Thank you for the response
