  • Reggie Yates’ Extreme - South Africa The White Slums
The Most Controversial Millionaire Preacher in South Africa: • The Most Controversial...
Think only black people live in shanty towns in South Africa? Think again. In this episode Reggie spends a week in South Africa’s largest white squatter camp - Coronation Park - outside Johannesburg.
South Africa has a white population of approximately 4.5 million and during apartheid, the racist society existed to elevate them into a privileged position. But today, white charities claim that up to 400,000 of them now live below the poverty line in small, make-shift camps- though these figures remain hotly disputed. Behind the headlines lies an uncomfortable question- with apartheid gone, are these white South Africans now the ones being discriminated against by being on the wrong side of affirmative action? And if so, will black & white ever be truly equal in South Africa?

Reggie Yates lives in a white slum for a while. It’s quite poignant how he deals with the people - who, for the most part, blame black people for their lot. His kindness eventually wins them over but he also knows and admits it’s not a quick fix. Great series. Enjoy.

Must've been a very humbling and enriching experience for the host of the show. Congrats to the man who got the job. I still remember Apartheid. I was old enough. My parents had us during Apartheid. White dad from England and Black mom from Zulu land. My brother was born a crime just like Trevor Noah. Many would never say but I was born into poverty and my family had to live in a 'grey area' because of the fact that we are a multi- racial family. I have gone on to travel the world and live my best full life abroad. However, I have returned to my country after 10 years of valuable skill building overseas. I am so useful to the world when I'm away from my country, however upon my return I am seemingly the most ''useless version of myself in South Africa''... Reason being, I've been applying for a job for 4 months and nothing so far. All the hiring human resources managers are white. I heard nothing back from them. The two times I got an opportunity to interview, it was because people of colour were the HR managers... The realty is, the country is facing a high unemployment rate and things are bleak for all who are not rich! Of course I do not believe that I am useless (I solo traveled the globe as a female, put myself through university while doing this and saw 21 countries before graduating. I know how to make things happen)... There's just not much happening in South Africa and it's easy to feel like one does not belong... Anyway I came back to South Africa to start a ministry channel. Something I couldn't do in Turkey because it's illegal to evangelize online with Turkey being a muslim country. I continue to look for opportunities and try to create some however I highly doubt that this will be my home... I can't stand filing out those forms when I'M job seeking that ask about my race... There is no box for Bi-racial and I am not accepted as Black in my country. It is what it is. A very strange experience but then again the world is my home... God bless anyone who read this snippet of my story...

I Think I had a very privileged upbringing. I was born and raised in one of the poorest parts of Glasgow, Scotland, namely "The Gorbals" in the 1950's and 60's. We were poor, lived in slum housing, had great friends and neighbours and the one family I did know who were mixed race were just accepted for who they were, they lived the same lives, had nothing like we had. On growing up, there were more Indian/Pakistani families in Glasgow and to us, they were Glaswegians, just like us. I was brought up to believe that people were just that, people, regardless of colour or religion and for that I am truly thankful.

Her family was strongly against apartheid; and until the day she passed, she held firmly to the belief of equality. To disagree would see you excommunicated from the family...

Good day, you did a great job looking into our country's history. I cried when little Winston how people in the camp admitted that people in the camp were drinking, fighting, and kicking. The way his voice shivered while saying, "Why, some people will make fun of me?" I want to hug him and say I will never make fun of him.
I was part of apartheid and was hit when I showed respect for black people. I did not allow them to change my personality to show love, kindness, and respect toward black people. Today I have more black friends than white because I treat them with the same kind of kindness I always had.
People judge too fast saying that black people must stop making babies if they know that they cannot look after them, yet, the white scattercamps are mostly children like you saw for yourself. In Afrikaans, there is a saying, "Wat jy saai sal jy maai." In English, "What you sow you will reap."
I feel like Gerrie's heart is filled with hate. It made my blood boil because he said there was no way to have a job. Through my own initiative, I get a commission from I represent. I know they do not have WiFi or opportunities to connect as I do, but to use the little money you get on cigarettes and alcohol is very selfish when you have children to look after. I cannot afford and I do not want cigarettes and alcohol in my life, because it destroys what is healthy.
I appreciated that the one man taking ownership.
Also in the block of flats, I just feel even if you are poor you can clean up after yourself. Noticing the toilets having rubbish around them.
Shoot the boer kill a farmer is such a big part of our daily reality. What the EFF do not realize is that they are taking the food away from their children too. No farmer No food! If the people of the EFF are angry and tired of being mistreated they must take it up with the government, not the farmers that are growing our food. Yes, they changed the lyrics because the government banned the song.
For the lady to be surprised why we are treated this way I only got a Biblical answer, where the Lord Himself explained why it will happen, proving that over many centuries people went through the same situations. Exodus 34:5 - 7, " Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.” (nkjv)
I did not appreciate that lady swearing and getting angry at you because you had a different point of view. I agree you do not forgive and forget because actions have consequences, and you have to live with them, just like when a woman cheats on her husband and gets pregnant. he can forgive her but the baby will still be there.
I am so glad for Hardes' birthday present. May he be blessed! Proving that with determination anyone can still get a job in South Africa. If possible and JD wants to get in contact with me I will be able to promote his art skills on social media.
I noticed the way they hugged and gave you a blessed sent-off. I am so glad for the great news at the end of your video. Sorry I did a whole essay but it is so close to my heart. Thank Reggy and everyone who worked behind the scenes. Love Ivy

When its happening to human beings, the pain & devestation is always the same, its the only thing equal,_in a racist environment full of inequality. We as human beings need to share our love for each other. To never forget is correct,_remembering motivates us to change the wrongs, if we don't know what the wrongs are,_then we are helpless to make positive changes. God bless all the People of the world, especially those suffering from racism & inequality and injustice. Because we are all Africans, we are all humans. This camp is but a drop in the ocean of the many black people that live in squatter camps. Squatter camps is a direct result of unequal provision of services and housing in the apartheid era. Anybody that think that the new government can wipe out this backlog in 20 odd years is a fool. The fact that the post 1994 government had to pay back the debt that the apartheid government had incurred with the South African owned insurance and provident companies is never spoken about. The people in the camp seem to think that we must just forget how they were given job previlages with less education at times

Donald Trump and his lies about helping the city after his casinos and pageants were here, the "white flight" and racial turmoil the city faced, Gary becoming the murder capital of the US, the gangs that were so well armed that they would chase the police out of some areas, Frank Sinatra and other celebs coming to the area to try to encourage the city about racial tolerance, a derelict Frank Lloyd Wright home in the ghetto. There are many things to talk about. Just an idea I would love to see

The awful truth is that poverty becomes a cycle in which the poor man's anguish about poverty becomes trapped as well as his thoughts that he cannot escape the tumultuous ongoing vicious cycle of poorness. Thank you for a great unbiased story. It makes one appreciate the little things one does have.

As a white South African woman, i despise my forefathers. I was a little child in the 90s. Left South Africa for the sake of my children. But as a result of my grandparents actions my children cannot grow up in their home country and know their cousins and grandparents. I pray daily for all the inncocent children of South Africa, especially the farmers who are still trying to feed the country.

Colonialists don't observe national boundaries. Unless you're from a family that actually colonized people then you can't be a Colonialist.

@@funwithmagnus8570 who are you to say that? Not every white person was a colonialist or slave master. That myth has to go. There were black muslim slave traders & owners all the way till the 1900s & no one likes to talk about that. The system wasn't caused by just one race or ethnic group.

You need to learn your history and understand that native Africans weren't living on the land prior, they flocked to SA because of what the settlers had built, and if it wasn't for the settlers there wouldn't be a South African, SA was founded and built by white people only to be handed over to the blacks who wanted it all for free, and they're running it into the ground.

I guess you would be speaking to those who were enslaved in the transatlantic slave trade as well. Because money is a defense, but it is not our provider. Satan wants more people to think like you. Which would push depopulation on all including animals. We came into this world with nothing and when we go nothing goes with us.
