I’m glad you enjoyed listening to Sokoninaru. I suggested them multiple times on the comment section 😝
“brilliant city” is from their latest album and it’s a pretty standard song for them. They can do so many crazy things with their instruments.
Juko Suzuki is the guitarist and he plays with a Momose (handmade Japanese guitar) Jazzmaster custom. He is one of my favorite Japanese guitarist. Same for Misaki Fujiwara, she’s in my top Japanese bassists with MISA and Koga. She’s using a Mayones Jabba Classic 4. Shoto Saito is their current drummer. Sokoninaru had many amazing support drummers, especially Shiyu who left the band last year. But Shoto is fantastic and he sings (and growls too)!
For the next song, maybe you can check out “Tenohira De Odoru”.
Thank you Ryan (I know the song and I had goosebumps too when the guitar solo started)

This band is awesome. This is one of their more mellow/melodic songs. Songs like 'Gou Ni Moyo' or 'Tenohira De Odoru' are more heavy, and complex. What's amazing is that they pull it off live so well.

    Ryan!
    Great reaction with passion!
These young Japanese bands need all the exposure that you reactors can give them!
This is at last Band Maid and other groups' legacy bearing the fruit!
As many a well-informed non-Japanese commentator pointed out the cynical Japanese music industry cares only about artificial pop groups with plenty of cute faces, who can dance and jiggle around instead of producing music, catered for a mass of silly non-musical fans who care only about their looks. The music industry are too happy entrapping young boys and girls and squeeze money out of them as fast as possible and go to the next one!
Band Maid and other bands who either broke their shackles or decided to go alone will stay in future history as the start of a musical revolution in Japan. It still will take some time as unfortunately the musical Japanese industry is strangled by shady business (and worse), but we may at last hope for tons of such talented young bands to come and blast the scene!
Another band I discovered through you! And I am sure many more reactors will follow suit!
It is 6:40 am, and thank you so much for the wake-up call!
Incidentally, their name, Sokoninaru, could be roughly translated as "The Point We Want To Reach"!
Cannot wait for our next reaction!
    Best regards,
    Robert-Gilles

Great reaction. Finally you picked up Sokoninaru. An absolutely great band and this could be the beginning of another wonderful friendship. Sokoninaru is after Band-Maid in the close second line of Japanese bands for me. Sokoninaru is highly complex music, this was one of their more straight forward tunes. I recommend Gou Ni Moyu next. All three top notch musicians, Misaki the bassist is another Japanese lady beside Misa who just own that bass. And the fascinating thing is - like B-M - they are so good they can deliver this complexity seamless live too. Sokoninaru was the last band I saw before COVID closed the world. The last 2 concerts here in 🇨🇭 Unfortunately they had to quit their first European tour after these because COVID restrictions took place in Europe in winter 2020. Enjoy - a fantastic band for sure.

First thing I noticed was the same Fender Sumire Yoshida from Silent Siren uses a lot since around 2014 and it's pink too!
But then as the song progresses any visual content was a secondary thing - the musical textures, that bass player... his voice went from what I thought was something a little less interesting to something...f*** good lord... Pretty much everyone already said it, but yeah, Sokoninaru is awesome (and finally a real three-piece, official drummer, yay!). Even not really understanding japanese I did watch quite a few of their "comment" videos, where they explain how to play their songs, which is such a cool thing to do for them. They also do a lot of covers and I haven't heard one I didn't like, even if i was on the fence about the originals. They have just such a distinct sound.

First impression regarding this song: I liked some of the tones, playing and atmosphere. But the song, imo, was produced way too choppy in order to make it feel, I assume, avant garde. No band would ever write or play live a song chopped up like beef liver. Also, they tried to put too much into the song in terms of beats and fancy do-nothing-riffs and fills. In other words, they didn't treat the base song honorably because it was not strong enough to play it straight up, on its own, I'm thinking. (But that's a big difference between this Sokoninaru song and any Band-Maid song.) I'm certainly not putting the band down. I haven't heard anything other than Brilliant City.

Oh man, if you think this song was choppy...
They don't actually use that many production tricks and from what I've seen they write their songs in a way that allows them to play them live and without things like backing tracks. Even going as far as using a loop station to record guitar parts on the fly for places where more than one guitar is necessary.
You can listen to how they play live here: czcams.com/video/dxDQI0nkBls/video.html
I can't tell you whether or not they want to sound avant-garde, but their influences are pretty clear.

The latter is actually a song Kanami covered before joining BAND-MAID.

LOL. This isn’t even near the extreme of what they can do.
And yes, they pull it off perfectly live.
      It’s kind of scary.
      Watch Tenohira De Odoru live.

@@powbobs Thx, for the comment, powbobs. Technically they're good. But the song and voice is a bit of a problem for me. But I'll check out some more. 🤘

Too much technical acrobatic circus, too little music. Sokoninaru is still waiting for a good composer. I like their covers the most.
