The dominance of Brookes Rowing needs a documentary to capture just how dominant this university rowing program has been

Total respect to Richard for the amazing things he has achieved with Brookes over the last 30 years. After hearing his side of the '92 race vs Exeter College, I can now claim a little bit of credit for all that success as well. As coach of the Exeter College crew, I was in the launch that day. No one disputed that OxPoly should have won that race (the event was already called the Temple) and probably the whole event, indeed the Exeter boys very sportingly offered a rerow, but the verdict was 4L not 1/4L. Jumping out of the boat would have meant instant DQ, although he probably could have jettisoned his oar.

So glad you mentioned Brookes’s success without the foreign imports. GB rowing would do well to get Rich and Henry involved as clearly these guys get more out of their athletes than probably any programme on the planet.

This was a great discussion with a really interesting bloke. I do wonder why people with such proven talent, able to make consistent winners out of groups of plucky underdogs, aren’t doing the same or advising at national level. Those who inspire incredible loyalty and commitment to the task in their others. Fascinating!

It’s called political fit - Spratley’ face and persona have never sat comfortably at Caversham. That said it in no way shrinks from his and his team’s achievements at OBUBC.

Impressed with the authenticity. Takes me back to 96/97. Thanks for the memories Richard.

Star coach to many in the competitive World of Uni rowing who also go on to represent our country at the very highest level eg Mat Tarrant, Scott Durant, Rory Gibbs etc. Thanks for making our sport so great.

I was a very small part of that year that Ludos seat collapsed. It was such an amazing time. I remember literally borrowing begging and sometimes acquiring equipment that we probably should have not been using. It was the little one taking on the MITE of the rest of the world if you pardon the pun… the mite group was the club sponsor… Thanks for the FB post seeing Richard chatting was great. His face seems a bit saggier than I remember….ha

Fantastic interview and portrayal of the ethos of Brookes Rowing. However, no mention of the Women making history in the Island Challenge Cup or fantastic result in the Remenham Challenge Cup at HRR this year.
