I’ve been growing bromeliads for many years, both outdoors & as houseplants. They did beautifully in my Santa Barbara garden happily growing 7 blocks away from the ocean where they relished the moisture from the coastal fog. I’ve grown them in my homes in New York City, San Francisco & now here in Tucson. A few questions have come my way about this topic so I want to share with you how I water bromeliad plants indoors.
Bromeliads are easy to care for both indoors & out. If you’re new to the world of houseplant gardening be sure to give 1 a go & you’ll be hooked on them in no time. Even though these pineapple relatives are native to the tropics and subtropics, they tolerate dry air & growing mix just fine. Just know that it’s much better to keep them on the dry side rather than consistently wet - rot will be their demise faster than you can say “aechmea fasciata“!
Find out how I water my bromeliads, how often I water my bromeliads & other things which are good to know.

Hello Joy.... I just bought my bromeliad this afternoon and first thing I thought is how to take care of it. As I was scrolling on CZcams, Thank God I found you!
Thank you for the info and God Bless❤️🙏🏼❤️

Hi Joy 🤗.I am so happy that i have found your video. I have a bromelia too and i didn't know what i have done wrong because it started to get brown lefs. Thank you. I am from Romania. 🤗
Thank you for this! I just bought one for my living room and your video was really helpful and made me smile.

You're a happy gardener ! Luv it😀just bought my 4 bromeliads yesterday...thanks for sharing
I have a very similar watering can. I love it because it fits easily in the bathroom sink and doesn't spill.
Thank you for simple tips in taking care of bromeliads.... I am starting to propagate some...coz i like the flowers,,, they're beautiful
I bought a gorgeous bromeliad with a keiki at a plant show at my local botanical garden. The guy I bought it from told me to keep the cup full at all times. So I did. It died. Thanks for the clarification on this. I can't believe the bad information I've gotten at nurseries and the botanical garden. When I have a question, I look to you. Thanks for being there.
Hey same here, told me to always keep the cup full and i did started dying. Now im tryin to just leave her be and see if she pulls out of it so upsetting.
Did she say to flush out the cup every month and let the water in it dry up?
@@sunnyh4570 I am wondering the same thing? Let it dry out. The cup. And then add a small amount or mist it? I can see where rot could easily set in. I think I will water very conservatively initially
Yes… i still dont understand how to do it properly 😢
Thank you so much. My kiddo bought me a bromeliad for the holiday … and your tips are so very helpful!!! Thank you!
Love that grown and bubbly vibe. Thanks for the great info!
Thank you for showing the cup!
Thanks for great info for my first bromeliad!!!
Thank you for this tutorial. I received a guzmania as a gift and I would like to keep it indoors, these were all great tips! 👍🏻💯❤️
Amazing flower..🌻

Thanks for the video. Now I know how it’s done 💚
I love your style! You remind me of me! So bright and cheery and a great video.
Thanks to you! Very helpful
I’m following you coz I’m new beginner and no idea in caring bromeliad
I am really enjoying your tutorials and videos. My bromeliads say thank you 🙏. Greetings from Albuquerque, and your high desert subscriber 🦋
I love so much Bromelia. I love bromelia's colour. Bromelia can growth on the tree.,on the stone,on the ground.
But how do you water bromeliad pups which are detached, do I just put water into the cup even though its very small, into the soil or I just mist them ?
Thank you !!!!!
When is a good time to cut the actual flower part off in a bromeliad?
Wow so beautiful. Almost looks iridescent♥
Hi - And its pups are growing like crazy. Nell
Omg im in Tucson and just moved from NY!! Lol that's so cool subscribed 😎
Thank you
Yay another Tucson plant enthusiast! Have you been to EcoGrow? Love them.
You seem like such a fun person! I recently bought one at IKEA because the color was too pretty to ignore. It came planted in a basic potting mix, should I find a way to transfer it to moss/bark like you said they came in? Thanks for the other tips!
How can you know of your plant is over or under watered
Thnx Nell xo 😚🤗💜🌵⚘🐞🐝
Hi Suzie!!! This video was a little goofy but I think every one will get the idea of how I do it. Hugs from the desert, Nell xo
Great and funny video!😂
Hello Nell
I really love the Bromiliead . It is a beautiful plant. Would be a beginner , any suggestions on what I should do?
How do we water when blooming? And how encourage to bloom?
I am finding that I may have thrips damage on my beautiful new Neoregelia... Yesterday I wiped it down with alcohol then dumped the dirt out of the pot. Disinfected the pot, got rid of the old dirt and then replaced it. Then I sprayed it really well with insecticidal soap. I stuck the yellow sticky tape beside to scoop up anything that I didn’t get. hope it makes it. She’s so beautiful
Hello Nell. I really enjoy your videos. I started growing Bromeliads very successfully on my patio in New Orleans. But, now I'm in SW AL and started collecting again. Never had problems with insects eating them until now. Can you recommend a product to treat for slugs, spider mites and caterpillars? I've done research but can't really find a definitive answer. I have Neem Oil, Malathion and BT but don't know which one is best. Also have mustard yellow mushrooms. I'd appreciate your recommendations. Thanks
Water every three weeks?
Rinse the well/urn/center/cup... good to know.
Thank you for sharing.
this lady is adorable
Are bromeliads sensitive to trans plant? I bought my wife a bromeliad from H-E-B the other day and it came in a small pot of soil/perlite mixture so I assumed it was safe to transplant into an organic soil I had laying around, after some researched I’ve decided Id like to transplant to orchid bark, but am wondering if I should give it some time before the transplant and if it’d be safe to wash away some of the soil from the roots.
Hello!!! It’s so good I found you, your videos are great. I wonder if you could help me. My guzmania came in a moss pot but it was set on a vase with those gel color spheres. I don’t know if that’s keeping the plant over humid, or maybe the mother plant is just dying, because it has those yellowish brown stains mostly in the center leaves and flower. Do you think I should keep it there, or take it out of the vase and put it in a dry planter so it’s not so wet? Tnx!
You are adorable!
Thank you for the info!
Imazing plant 😍
I love it! Nell
Is there a way to remove mineral buildup on a bromeliad?
I love bromeliacee...🍀🍀🍀thanks!
Hi, what do you do with the flower your removed? do you re pot that?
I’m watering one of these for a friend and think I’m f’ing it up. It looked like it was getting soft and brown and now the brown part is very dry. What do I do???
Is mildew in the planting medium alright? I bought a soil mix however im worried about the mildew which is known to cause diseases for plants. Any help? Thank you!
I have a blushing bromeliad that I keep in my radiator heat apartment. Within 24-48 hours of filling the tank even to the brim, it's completely drained. How often do you propose I water it during the winter?
Bromeliad live off the debris that accumulates in the cup. Decays into fertilizer.
How do u save an over watered bromeliad I had indoor
There is advice in another video to not water in the cup but in the plant. The plants looked beautiful and yhe flowers vibrant. She even gave a measurement of water to be poured in.
Excellent job on the video! Why did you cut the flower? Will the flower come back?
She said it was dead... I hope it will come back
Flowers do not come back on Bromeliads, you have to repot their pups, which will flower themselves
I didnt cut my flower. Im waing for my ouo to bloom
I heard you say you live in Tuscon, AZ. Which bromeliads do you grow in full sun outside in the ground? Do you have any fav. species?
So I’m supposed to water both the soil and the cup? The leafs on mine are looking light green and I don’t know if that is bad. This is my first plant ever! Please help
My plant is an outdoor how many times should I water it?😁
What size containers are you using?
Help my poor Bromie, please. I am clipping the flower and now using distilled water I hope I can save it. Are there any fertilizers they like to help heel my Bromie?
Is browning leaves a sign of overwatering?
My first bromeliad is more like the one you cut the flower off of, so I'm a newbie to them. How possible is it for the plant to grow "pups" that can be transplanted, and how long before they "bloom"? Thanks, and now subscribed! : )
The bromeliad will produce pups after flowering (you can see a nice big pup on the right side of the plant @ 5:25) and the plant will put its energy into growing the pups as it dies. You can separate the pup and its roots from the main plant at pretty much any time, but the longer you wait, the shorter the bloom time will be. A newly-planted bromeliad pup should flower in about 3 years and then produce pups of its own.
hi NELL,i recently cut the flower off mine and thought have i done the right thing,so was pleased to see you cut the flower off yours,NELL do you ever get any of the wild life from the desert in your garden?thanks for the video, best wishes from a cold north east england
Hi Michael - Yes, you can cut the flower off when it starts to turn or when it's totally brown. Lots of wildlife visit my garden - snakes, butterflies, birds, lizards, geckos, snakes, javelinas & bobcats. Lots of 4-legged action! Greetings from the sunny desert, Nell
Will it flower again?
❤
why did you cut the flower? why not separate it and put it in another pot?
How do you keep gnats out of your houseplants? I have such a tough time I have almost given up on any plants inside.
tmarland04 , sprinkle on top of the soil with Diatomaceous earth to fix ur gnat problems. Hope this helps.
I have one it is yellow
Hello. I've come across your video while googling how to water bromeliads growing indoors. I've learned some important things, so thank you for that. But I must say you've confused me somewhat. You said you were going to talk about your indoor bromeliads, but you kept making reference to thinks to do with the outdoors. You talked about temperature and weather conditions, etc. that have nothing to do with inside your home. It was really confusing.
Beautiful plant mine sadly rotted.
Bromeliads are surprisingly drought tolerant - go easy on the watering! Nell
I bought 4 of them at Lowe's but they are too expensive, can I bring them inside during winter????
because they grow god damn slow
