  • It's been several months since we last had the Prophet 12 at our studio, and now, the Dave Smith Instruments team has given us a second run to create more factory bank patches. Much has changed, and all for the better, with the Prophet 12.
    Firstly, it sounds much larger than before and there are more wavetables. Secondly, the stereo field is incredible. We were able to use very subtle panning modulations to create a strong and wide sense of space with the patches we've programmed. Also, the user interface has been incredibly streamlined providing us with a very speedy workflow while assigning very complex modulations. Lastly, the new arpeggiator is unbelievable.
    Our many thanks go to everyone at DSI. It's an honor to be making patches for the next Prophet synth.
    This demo was recorded via a Neve Portico Preamp into a Digidesign 192 Pro Tools HD interface. We recorded this synth no differently than we record all of our other synths. Also, there is no MIDI on this demo. Everything was played by hand and used the onboard controls and modulators present on the Prophet 12. And there are absolutely zero Emerson, Lake, and Palmer impressions nor any keyboard equivalents of the "Stairway to Heaven" solo. Nor will there ever be on this channel.

    I've been playing synths since 1979 and I have a good ear for analog, digital and software synths. The bottom line is that synths are to music what choice of paint is to painters. There are times when each type has exactly the right sound for a composition. The P12 is very exciting because of the range of sounds it is capable of doing. The forthcoming Prophet 6 will have some up sides too. Neither one will cover everything. I own a great selection of analogs and digital synths and think the P12 straddles the divide very well. 12 voices will certainly be better for people like us who are looking for massive pads and leads. Yet it already sounds distinctive from the Virus and other VA synths. So I think DSI have hit on something amazing here. Even if the analog purists condemn it for not being analog enough. For some of those guys I think the hardware is more important to them than making great music. To make great music you need a wide palate of sounds. Analog alone cannot do that. Thanks DSI for a wonderful instrument.

    you're cooking up excellent patches. i have been thinking of a poly evolver, but now want to play one of these before.....so many of these comments amaze me. like ford v. chevy pick-up-truck arguments. i have both analog (Odyssey + Pro-1) and digitals....my emax and Korg dss-1 have analog filters, and both have killer sounds. all of the Waldorfs (Q rack, XTK and Micro Q) are just incredible. The P-12 seems to incorporate the best of all of them.. . . thanks for this

Ive got so much gear already , inc a tetra and loads of vintage synths, that something curtis flavoured and STABLE with BIG CHORD/split ability and a HUGE mod matrix, would be a very welcome addition indeed.

    I love the ESQ, because nothing else sounds like an ESQ. Those grainy 8-bit wave's through Curtis filters give it an identity that's its own. I want this new Prophet, because it doesn't sound like any other poly I've heard before, including the P08. Digital Osc's are all part of this synth's appeal, makes the P12 sound like a P12. Surely you can't deny that this synth sounds, at least good? Digi osc's or whatever, as for music production, I can't wait...

    Thank you! I have to be honest that my love for the PolyEvolver goes a little farther than other DSI synths. My problem with it is the 4 voices. It's just not enough due to the round robin voice allocation. However, what I love about the P12 is that it sounds like nothing else in their product range. And, it sits really well in the context of other analog synths. As for Waldorf, I feel like the P12 is still so much more rooted in Sequential/DSI sound that there's no real comparison/overlap.

  • @INHALTVIDEO
    @INHALTVIDEO  Před 11 lety +2

    There isn't a lot of menu diving on the synth as most of the controls are available on the front panel with a dedicated knob per function. The architecture itself is based around subtractive synthesis so if you are familiar with how that basic signal flow works you should be right at home on the P12. There are a couple of different features on the P12 though like FM between the oscillators, AM, and also a really extensive modulation matrix that might need a little reading up on.

    Now owing a Prophet 12 for a couple of weeks I can say for me it is very precise and clinical. Definitely hear the digital oscillators don't be fooled it's like analogue OSC it's not, but you can get something almost same although you feel there is something missing not quite right emulating analogue. This is truly a great synth and I haven't even scratched the surface. If you want an analogue sounding synth get analogue. People must embrace this synth for what it is and stop comparing to other

  • @williandiesel
    @williandiesel Před 11 lety +2

    It sounds unique, dark and sci-fi, reminds me a bit on the Evolver Wavetable sounds. The deal these days is to drop 3 grand on this thing, with that cash you can get a lot of stuff. You can have for example a Mopho X4 + Analog Four + NI Komplete and that would cover a lot of ground. But im sure this is not aimed for these guys anyway.

    THE BEST demo a mfr can offer of its New Product ARE factory presets..
    The 'SALE' is made when A.potential buyer sees one at the music store (or youtube) and plays the factory 'presets...If they suck, the buyer loses interest and walks. They won't reconsider until they hear something that inspires.

  • @CW2SCOGG

    After this second go around and hearing your great presets, this one might just have to be a certain acquisition...gonna have to give it a very good listen....very nice, tweakable presets you've made there.., might just have to give this one a try...sure love the modulation on those pad sounds..... I am very proud that DS is doing such a great job at continuing to improve upon his legacy. Now if Tom Oberheim could just get his S together and create a modern MIDI equivalent of the OBX or 8 Voice in a half size equivalent of the original, we'd be in business.

    Ok, having now played one in person I can say it's a good, not great "out of this world" synth. No need to hate me, I am telling like I hear it. It's digital sounding with a slight hint of analog flavor. One thing that got me right away was it's almost 2D flatness. Mind you I play an obxa, mini, rev 2 (and sometimes rev 3) plus others. Once you hear real analog nothing comes close. Still, the p12 is a fine synth. I like the PEK too.

      Each voice has 2 analog oscillators and 2 digital oscillators and an LFO. So you get the best of both worlds. The voice structure is very similar to the Poly Evolver, with many additional parameters not available on an Evolver.

    Only time will tell if it becomes a classic or will simply be another great synth, but not quite there in the same league as mini moog & voyagers. DSI create synths of the way of the future. Moog create (best sounding IMHO) analogue synths of the past

  • @Coowallsky
    @Coowallsky Před 10 lety +1

    "Definitely hear the digital oscillators don't be fooled it's like analogue OSC it's not, "
    Oscillators are oscillators. They are simply waveform generators. IT's what is downstream that separates the wheat from the chaff.
    And how can you store an oscillators setting in memory without an A-D conversion? And recalling the setting from memory requires a D-A conversion. So it's digital.

    It's a good synth. But Vista is right. The ripping highs are absent and the bass just doesn't thump. After awhile I get listening fatigue to the tone that doesn't breath. A lot of people here have never played a synth that really thumps. Once you do, others just don't cut it.

  • @vistacruiser70s
    @vistacruiser70s Před 10 lety +1

    I didn't think you would have a decent comeback and you proved me right, thanks for that Simon.
    If you re-read my comments I never once bashed the p12. What I am dong is giving you a much need reality check. *You* may not notice less then great tone, but many of us do. I have played the classic analogs since the day they came out. I know tone, synths and programing. Once you have played a fully re -caped and calibrated obxa for example, you know what direct feedback and inspiration from a synth is all about. Of course, you haven't experienced this or you would know it first hand. You would notice the p12's ocs don't breath and have an "alive" movement between them. You would be struck by the stiff, canned sound. It doesn't take long to get fatigued by it. Will this stop people from making music with it? No. It's still a good synth.
    A GREAT synth has huge bass resonance and extended highs. Bass that not only thumps you in the chest, but shakes the floor and rattles windows. The p12's envs don't have that kind of snap or bass depth. Feature set notwithstanding, great tone is full analog. The p12 is cool no question. But the tone is hardly great. It's blurred and doesn't have a rich tone with extended, ripping highs. The kind of analog tone I am talking about just thrills you too no end. You can feel it. The p12's tone doesn't do it for me. It has a dreamy "in-between" tone that lacks what makes great synth tone. Take Dave's Prophet 5 Rev 2 for example. That's his best Synth. That's a synth with 3D depth and bass. He should try to top that.
    A great synth sells for over double it's original cost 20 years latter. Will the p12 fall into this category? Probably not. Do you think it will?
    I would like to see my favorite synth designer bring out a full analog instead of going the hybrid route. Many people would buy such a synth. It would hold it's value and that would be a good investment for the future. This would be going forward in satisfying a need, instead of going sideways. The p12 has a DW8000 tone. It's cool, but Dave can and will do better. Tom Oberheim put out a full analog. Why can't Dave?
    You could care less, but many people can hear the slightly less then stellar tone of the p12. It's a good, not great synth. You have been schooled.

      Please stop. Your superiority complex is hilarious. I like how you claim that you are irrefutably correct, and if I disagree then I have inferior ears. You clearly have an emotional attachment to vintage synths, and thats absolutely fine - but you should recognise it as such. I assure you that a prophet 12 can 'thump you in the chest, shake floors, and rattle windows'. Accept things that are new and more powerful than before, even if they are a bit different.

      Many 100% analog synths. They flood the market. And there's the new prophet. Why is it always what "we" want. Sounds like it's about what "you" want, which is apparently analog, only analog, and nothing else matters - well, there's many many options these days. People speak as if it's not 2014/2015 and we are back in the days where analog had been nearly fully replaced by digital.

      chieftp a ship in the harbor is safe, but that’s not what boats were made for. Sure it can do simple sounds, but can also go above and beyond what any typical two oscillator analog synth can do.
      I think what people freak out about with this and the Pro2, is the character section, which makes things sound degraded and scratchy. INHALT seems to be liking these which is fine. Yes, if you load up to DSP saw waves and detune by 5-10 cents, it will sound like digital crap. However, this synth affords digital crap, but one can also shape modulate every single wave in subtle fashion, then modulate slop, pitch, etc....and before you know it, this thing can really sing.
      The Pro2 is far superior sound wise IMO. It has MUCH better filters. Frankly, if the P12 had either of the Pro2 filters, its would have been an instant classic.

    Nice synth. But one thing I noticed is that it has only one sound. It sounds the same on every patch. Where on my p5 it will always have the prophet sound but on some patches you can't really tell. An organ patch will have it's own character, while a bell sound will sound like a real bell without sounding like a prophet. Real analog is like that I guess. Still, the p12 gives me hope. Things are moving in the right direction? Could be.

    Following the herd? The number of people using vintage analog are in the elite. "We" are the regular people who want a NEW fully analog we can get our hands on and not have to take it to tech for restoration. There is no "herd" these days building full analog polys, a few perhaps, but they just don't cut it. The p12 is good not great. What is great is his p5 rev 2. Bringing into the now a full analog poly would be out of this world. Listen to this p12, it's got an "in-between worlds" tone that is not as sharp as digital nor warm as analog. It's got a Korg dw8000 tone. Hardly a step forward. You may not want a new fully analog poly (how about one with multi mode filters-yeah!) But "we" do!

      You've heard of the Prophet 08, right? Or are DCO's still not vintage enough for you? If you want a prophet 5 then buy one. Eventually the rose tinted glasses will wear off and you'll realise how temperamental they are. I'm all for diverse tastes - but the analogue police seem to spend most of their time slandering these new instruments. The P12 is great, not good - despite what all of the glass-half-empties are spreading around the comments sections. If they created a full analog that did all that the p12 can do; nobody would even buy it! It would be too expensive, too heavy and a little ridiculous.

    ANDY, am I spelling TROLL wrongly? My opinions have not changed. The p12 is good not great.

    Nope. Same digital seen on all patches. It's cool and all but it's just to bad we are never going to top the late 70s and early 80's for tone. Even the Omega 8 sounds thin next to an rev 2. it's just to clean and clinical.

    Good synth but it lacks power and bass. The highs are weak and blurred. The attacks do not surpass what was done in the past. It's got a murky, mushy korg dw8000 tone. Lets hope in the future synths will actually top what has been done before.

      It lacks what has been done before because It does something else. It's one of the greatest synths every made. A classic.

    How can those synths be of the past when I am playing them today? I never said anything about "in the mix". I am talking about getting direct feedback playing live. The p12 just doesn't give me that pleasure that the synths I am playing today do....my mini and rev 2.. rev 3, jup 6 etc. You sound like a weirdo. The p 12 just sounds bland, wake up and clean out your ears. You sound like those people that say there is no need to play a B3 live because there are modern clones that nobody would notice in mix or out in the crowd. I WOULD NOTICE and that's the point. Tell Robert Walter his B3 is "of the past" and he should be playing something modern. I just don't get the inspiration from the p12 that I should be getting. The player playing notices and that's what is most important. I could tell after 15 minutes of playing it that it was lacking in 3d depth and bass. And where is the high end sizzle? Did you even play it in person? If it's so advanced and "today", then where is the juice? A lot of people are saying the same thing basically. Why do the synths you favor need to "hide in the mix"?. You got no where to go. You made your point and it's lame.

      I love DSI. What kind of music are you making? If your keyboards and synthesizers work for you, so be it. Music is art, and art is subjective. What you find bland, another man will find pleasant and inspiring.

      It sounds like a very loud and nice looking but completely charmless instrument - but it might be the patch programming. It sounds a bit like 12 of those horrible little Pro-Ones stacked together.
