  • George Frideric Handel
George Frideric Handel, (1685-1759) was a baroque composer born in Germany and spent most of his career in London. He is best known for oratorios, for example, the Messiah, his operas, anthems, organ and concertos.
Jephtha(HWV 70) is an oratorio written in 1751 with the libretto by Rev.Thoma Morel in the English language.
The story of the Jephtha is based on his promises to God that if he wins his next battle, he will have to sacrifice the first creature he meets on the way home after his victory. Unfortunately, the first creature he met was his daughter, Iphis. She has been sacrificed in the original Bible story, but an angel stopped the sacrifice in the oratorio, dan Iphis only needs to serve God for the rest of her life.
In Gentle Murmurs Will I Mourn
“In gentle murmurs will I mourn” was sung in act 1 by Storgé, Jeptha’s wife, about missing him and showing her support him while he is at his battle.
