  • A truly stunning and moving piece from one of the world's top spoken word poets Shane Koyczan.
We were so pleased to play host to Shane for two nights of his UK tour in 2019 and we hope you enjoy this small snippet from our Edinburgh show with him.
Shane's work has been a huge influence on what we do here at I Am Loud and this is just another example of the raw, emotional, fearless, and honest performances that have made Shane a role model to so many writers.

I can't imagine lasting 30 seconds without either laughter that hurts or tears of joy, but he knows the heart...and that always stops us in our tracks.

I have to say, it's near impossible to experience your poems without shedding tears. In some it's just a light rain, in others, straight downpour. They strike a hurricane, bringing Dorothy and Toto, a house and a cow, yet it's calmer somehow.
Ruffling our feelings, your works touch us deeply with utmost precision. As if you gave us a master key to the house so that we can check every room, see which resident emotions are in and which guests are out.
Some stay too little. Others stay way longer than what we wished, even if uninvited. Feeling like they're taking up space, blowing up a room door from time to time , or being constantly present in the control room, giving us unecessary inputs and comments. Or so we think. You show us that it could be our point of view. If changed places, we could see that some we have to deal with, since they can be seasonal visitors. Others we have to learn how to live with them, giving them sweets to keep them appeased, medidating with them side by side, or giving them TV to keep them distracted. Sometimes, there are too many. But you show us that every single one is important. To cut off a feeling would be to amputate a part of one's self, becoming a car missing gears - it runs but maybe not as well as a complete one.
The way you compose poems, with each and every word was thought of in detail, as well as their meanings, inspires us to view beauty in the world. To also compose poems. To live day after day, second after second. To live.
Thank you mr. Koyczan, for teaching me how to feel life.

"She was my best friend. How much I loved her is how much it huts - and I can't fit that on a scale from 1-10."
I just lost my dog, my first dog, who was with me for 9 years.
After the appointment I had to go straight to bed and wake up that night for work.
I had to hide the agony, the devastation, strengthen the floodgates until I could get to my car at the very end.
Your poetry has always resonated with me but this quote speaks to me differently now.
It is impossible to describe to someone this loss, but, "how much I loved her is how much it hurts" is as close to an explanation I think I could get.
Thank you for your poetry, for sharing your heart and soul with the world.

You are absolutely fantastic! Your humour and humility, bravery and vulnerability. So many parts of this resonated deeply and directly with me personally, you've put words to what previously only had clinical, sanitised numbers. Thank you for sharing this. Deep gratitude and respect for a finely crafted and emotive piece of work.

Your words always hit different. Such an inspiration, wish I was a quarter of the wordsmith that you are.
