    just bought a house and had the pleasure of removing 2 layers of flooring to prep for tile. can't believe this was common practice in the 80s.

    Even for 1982 that vinyl flooring pattern is so out of date. Looks like something purchased from a early 70's Sears catalog. I hate wood paneling. Just about every house or office in the 70's and 80's had that crap nailed up. It makes a house look dark, depressing, and cheap. A lot of people put that up to keep from having to paint.

    I've noticed not enough light in the living room,former garage. Should have put picture windows in front and back walls.

    • @gabrielhowell5861

      I agree with you. I also have empathy for the most part for the cast because they had a super low budget (by 1982 New England standards) and they had to get the absolute most out of every dollar they parted with (which wasn't nearly the case.) A bad design for the project was at fault, I think, and the area where this house is located was a part of the greater Boston area that had really bad soil and water pollution from chemical waste spillage. On the bright side, I learned how to tile a floor and hang a door properly so it isn't all that bad.

      it's quite interesting to me, as i've ripped out so many kitchens and floors that are as dating as this one. To see the old timers putting this stuff in as new cutting edge style and material lol. That kitchen, floor, and wall paper looked dated brand new lol.

    I like the deck idea from the front entry, but I disagree with the notion of keeping the kitchen door. Remove the door, wall it off, remove the steps, and re-side it, then put in a new door in the back of the house.

    Holy crap, did they ruin this house or what? I’m convinced this entire season was conceived by some snobby architectural types at PBS as a thinly-veiled way to completely make fun of all their “idiot” do-it yourselfer viewers in their old tract homes...Mylar wall paper, plastic laminated cabinets, that hideous vinyl floor, turn the garage into a living room with a pot belly stove? I love the Earl Shibe “Resilient Floor Covering” guy. Just wow... lol

    • @11sfr
      @11sfr Před 3 lety +2

      Wood and coal stoves were hugely popular at the time, just a few years after the 1979 oil embargo, and laminate cabinets were common well into the 1990s, especially as cheap, builder grade items. The rest was explained by the show's very low budget severely limiting how much new construction they could do on this one, and also just the aesthetics of the time. The material choices were reasonably popular in 1982, not cutting edge high style, maybe a few years out of date, but not everyone keeps up with trends
