„Although I’ve been listening to the Czech Philharmonic all my life, I only came to conduct here the first time last year. I fell in love with the orchestra and I was so much looking forward to coming back. But I just didn’t think it would be so soon.“

„I know this is strange time. Normally condutors are booked three years in advance and this time I was asked a month ago. Of course, unmissable opportunity.“

Whoever at the Czech Philharmonic decided to film and upload this, deserves a medal. ## With my younger daughter, Katie and her brilliant Japanese friend Chinami Takeba (cruelly snatched away from the world), we met a dark haired Rattle, at the Royal Albert Hall after a Prom Concert, many moons ago. He could not have been nicer to all three of us.

Maestro Rattle isn´t just a brilliant conductor but also his English is absolutely amazing.

Rafael Kubelik, after his return to Czechoslovakia and the Czech Philharmonic after 42 years of exile, said to that orchestra in rehearsal, "It is my joy to hear this. I always wanted it to sound like this but never really found it with any other orchestra in the world. That eighth [note] is great!" One might have thought that was just the right thing to say at that moment, but if Rattle is right about this orchestra, Kubelik may have been pointing specifically to a quality that makes this orchestra different...to this day.
