Chicken Whisperers 2013 Flugtag Craft Testing

- We spent a day flight testing our aircraft about 2 weeks before the final event where we competed, won, and broke the world record. We still hold the world record as of 12/2019. This is some footage from that day. This was super risky. If we broke the fragile ~80lb plane made from mostly foam, mylar and a little wood and aluminum we probably wouldn't have had time to fix it before the event. Red Bull had some very strict rules about that heavily constrained the design of this thing, mostly about the overall size and pilot interaction.

Just wondering if you have any experience? As far as the design goes it looks promising with a streamlined pod for the pilot.
I seen someone building a fiberglass pod with engine an it only added 10kg so this is not a bad idea
Black turbine I was thinking of a small engine as well. The thrust can cause pilot induced occilitation if power isn't applied carefully but ultra lights and hang gliders have been around long enough for the information to be available to do it safely. Maybe even a small sustainer engine to keep it up once airborne.
The other issue regarding experience is the structure itself integrity wise. Flying wings have been a fascination with many pilots and engineers for almost as long as aviation itself. Few have truly succeeded but again, this looks promising and I wouldn't mind having a set of plans.
I have been a pilot for 34 plus years and own a Wittman Tailwind currently.

I studied the ICARUS V and the swift quite a bit in working on this Flugtag glider. The large chords are a result of the low stall speed needed to get flying at low launch speeds at low altitudes. I don't have dimensions handy but there is nothing magical. It was 200 ft^2 or so rectangular. Very low aspect ratio ~4. Reflexed airfoils and moderate sweep with some modest washout for minimum induced drag.

And why is it only designed to hang from? In that position the pilot’s wind resistance is like a dangling barn door.
Why not just put bigger wheels on it, lie under it and coast down the hill?
