  • After arriving in Ipoh Perak and hearing it's reputation for having some of the best food in Malaysia, we had to head out try as much of the cuisine here as we could and find the best places to eat in Ipoh. Let's take you on a food tour across Ipoh Malaysia and try some of the best desserts they have to offer. We got to try the famous white coffee for the first time which is beloved across Malaysia and originated here in Ipoh. We also tried a variety of unique desserts, cakes and pastries that blew our mind. From the famous beancurd dessert, heong peah, kaya puff, egg tarts and more unusual and interesting street food snacks. We never tried anything like this before and these Malaysian desserts definitely left us speechless...

    White coffee doesn't mean its white with milk. Its because of the way the coffee beans are roasted. There are 2 ways of roasting. One with sugar and margarine. The other is with just margarine. I think the 1st one is called white coffee. You can ask the locals. Good choice of bean curd with ginger sugar. Ginger is good, helps to settle your stomach. Ohh those puff buns are superb especially for tea or breakfast.

    Tau Foo Fa - beancurd (soy-bean curd) : soothing food for the bowels. I love it with palm sugar syrup. I think the rice ball content might be black or red bean paste? (not sure).

    White Coffee is coffee roasted half of the way through and to a lower temperature. By roasting it to this much lower temperature, you get a whitish colored bean that is higher in caffeine because you roast out less caffeine. This results in a very nutty and sweet taste profile much different from traditional coffee.

    The Tau Foo Fa (soy milk pudding) is actually chinese dessert. You can find them in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. In Malaysia we only have sweet version, I think in other country they have savoury version which I never had before.

    Malaysian coffee is the best.. ,>> well balanced.. fresh and authentic.. it's originally from fresh roasted coffee beans blended with a little of butter or margarine.. Always remember Malaysian "KopiTiam" aka coffee shop.. 👍😊

    • @sebastianbarthez
      @sebastianbarthez Před rokem

      kopi tiam, kopi is coffee in Malay, whereas "tiam" is the meaning of "shop", a Chinese dialect (hokkien). A mixture of 2 languages.

    The kaya puff fillings you can make it your own. Is made from egg yolks + coconut milk + sugar, cook in slow heat and continuously stirring until it thickens. You can make them for your bun fillings too or spread on toasted plain white bread with butter.

    just so you know there are 2 types of egg tarts one is the original egg tart which is pure yellow in the middle (without any brownish burnt look) and the second one is the one you ate which is a portuguese egg tart (with brownish burnt look) but most locals called it "po tart" which translates to portuguese tart and that white round thing is not a seed its actually a "mochi" but stuffed with red bean paste and those other white things yes they are actually made it to look like tofu but its called "tofu fa"

    The black-seed core inside glutinous flour in your the tofu custard (wth ginger syrup) is actually black sesame.
    It would help if you ask the vendor what are you eating. Or, maybe do a bit of research first guys. And, yes that's really a bit too much of 'desserts' at a short span. Hats off you guys for managing all that sugar high that you both did. 👍🏻😅

    I guess the green stuff is made using lotus paste. Salted egg is quite pricey so the quantity maybe too small too notice. The chicken part is made using chicken floss which is quite light on the taste as compared to chicken filling in siew bao. D*mn nice blue plate though.
    The ball in the bean curd is called tong yuen. Its quite similar to mochi ball, but eaten in sweet soup. The black stuff is black sesame. It can sometimes be filled with crunchy peanuts or red bean. Its not meant to be spreaded in the beancurd, which kinda makes it disgusting. Tong yuen is best taken without the beancurd and just plain ginger soup, which is the traditional way to eat it in winter solstice festival.

    “I wasn’t expecting that”, in the first place if you go to a new place to try new food, you should have an open mind and should have no expectations.
    The fact that you said “I wasn’t expecting that”, while frowning constantly just tells me your ability to review new foods is mediocre, while doing 0 research. If you want to review food with this close minded mindset, you might as well review your own local food.
    Also, you said that most of the food was “too sweet”, but mind you, you said yourself that you are tasting desserts for the entire video, desserts are sweet, duhhhh, of course they have sugar.
