Prince Edward wipes away tears as Duchess of Edinburgh gives surprise birthday tribute

- The Duke of Edinburgh wiped away tears as his wife surprised him on Friday, 8 March, with a tribute ahead of his 60th birthday.
Prince Edward will celebrate his landmark birthday on Sunday.
The Duchess of Edinburgh took to the stage at the end of the Community Sport and Recreation Awards in Leeds, describing Edward as “the best of fathers, the most loving of husbands" and "still my best friend."
The duke was visibly emotional after Sophie described how, like his father, the late Duke of Edinburgh, “my husband never seeks compliments for himself”.

I have said it again! They are a great asset for the royal family and a steady backup for the King!
Prince Edward and the Duchess of Edinburgh, along with Princess Anne, and more recently Prince William (despite the open spat with Harry) and the Princess of Wales, must have been a great source of strength for the Queen and Prince Philip and helped to keep them sane over the years, while the rest of the family was going off the rails with all their controversies and excesses. I always liked Edward; he may have disappointed some by choosing the theatre over the army, and his “Royal It’s A Knockout” idea didn’t go down too well in some quarters, but that was nothing compared to what his brothers got up to, it was long ago, and ever since then he has been a hard working, responsible and dutiful member of the Royal Family.

Are you talking about the fake Sheik story? Where the newspaper reported impersonated being a Sheik looking to hire her PR company, and she fell for it but was being set up and secretly recorded?
She was indiscreet with some of her opinions about certain people and then the reporter revealed it was ALL going to print? So, embarrassed Sophie tried to wheel-a-deal to gave them the "My Edward is NOT Gay" story to have them bury the other. BUT it was then sold to another mag and so BOTH stories came out?
Wow, that must be 20 years ago now. I am so glad Sophie and Edward were able to sort it. Sometimes is takes a crisis or two to realize what priorities really matter.
I can't imagine sometimes what it must be like to be RF and have reporters using any means to get a story. Quite a few have fallen victim. I think Diana, Fergie, Sophie. Good grief, it takes a lot of strength to stick it out in the Royal Family.
