  • The North Rhine-Westphalian city of Paderborn nestles picturesquely in the east against the Egge Mountains, which are part of the Teutoburg Forest Nature Park. The Pader, Germany's shortest river at 4 km, meanders through the city. Numerous excursion lakes attract city travelers to Paderborn. The university, founded in 1614 and now a theological faculty, is one of the oldest in Germany.
One of the city's most impressive buildings is the Paderborn Cathedral in the city center with its mighty, 93-meter-high west tower. The late Romanesque/Gothic cathedral church houses numerous chapels with precious works of art and the silver shrine of Saint Liborius from 1627. The Diocesan Museum, the oldest in the German-speaking world, presents magnificent sacred art from the 10th to 20th centuries. Four nationally known choirs perform in the cathedral, including the Paderborn Cathedral Choir, which first appeared in 806.
In addition to the cathedral, Paderborn's historic town hall with its distinctive three gables is also a well-known landmark of the city. The building, built in 1620 in the pretty Weser Renaissance style, impresses with enchanting ground floor arcades based on Florentine models. One of the most renowned museums among Paderborn's 12 exhibition halls is the Heinz Nixdorf Museum in the Fürstenallee in the city center, the world's largest computer museum. During your trip, follow in the footsteps of Paderborn computer pioneer Heinz Nixdorf, who died in 1986, and explore 5,000 years of information and communication technology history. Be amazed by the more than 2,000 exhibits on the development of writing, the first calculating machines, telegraphy and the first PC. The courses on secret writing and robot construction are exciting for children.
A popular destination for a short vacation or short trip to Paderborn is the large park of the Paderquell area in the middle of the city. Around 200 karst springs emerge here, which feed the Pader. Hike along the nature-rich Pader floodplains to the Padersee, past the still active Stümpel mill from around 1800 to the Schloss Neuhaus district with the castle and floodplain park, where the state garden show took place in 1994. Here, at the confluence of the Lippe, Alme and Pader, the stately Neuhaus Castle rises in the style of the Weser Renaissance. The highlight of a city trip to Paderborn are the well-known events of the Schlosssommer in the park of the former episcopal residence, which was mentioned as early as 1036.
