My God, these videos are so comforting. The music, the nostalgia, the old Tomb Raiders. I'm sitting alone in my apartment, on my bed with hot cocoa, there's dark and snowy outside and I'm watching them. Just perfect. Sorry for my English lol
Np XD my english was bad too when I made these videos XD
I wonder if Super mario 64 with AI is also possible and the story?
The mummy follows you because it's a 2D sprite. Because of its lack of depth it always faces you. The medikits are the same. You can notice a similar thing in Duke Nukem and Exhumed. (Sorry to spoil your fun. :p)
this
You're smart!!!!
Billboarding. Very common for its age and something still used today
It was the same thing with the pickups in TR2. TR3 has 3D models for pickups.
It uses something called a lookat constraint, which means that it will always turn to face an assigned object - in this case the camera.
I noticed your A.I. used the secret area jump while pushing forward as well as that quick speed run move after activating the timed door. Both moves are the exact replica of what you used to do back in your 2012 video titled “Tomb Raider Weird Facts - Episode 1 - Creepy Mummy”. This makes me wonder how did that happen? Did you interfere with the A.I.’s behavior and hard coded some of the stuff there? I would love an explanation because this isn’t a coincidence.
By the way, fascinating video, thank you for this entertaining watch.
I also came here from the A.I. video, and some observations here are way too similar to the observations of "A.I. Lara":
dreaming, backwards wolf tracks, the mummy
@@Hiandbye95
Makes one wonder how genuine his A.I. video is, right?
@@Meddi_Logically Sadly, yes
It’s obviously scripted as it also uses other elements from this video. I still enjoy the “self aware Lara” videos though and I hope he continues making them.
Not surprised they used the Mayan calender in Peru. They also had a Thor room in St. Francis Folly which is located in Greece. Clearly it didn't matter to them as much if they got some facts or myths wrong back then.
That's the Aztec's calendar called "Piedra Del Sol", it's not Mayan👀
Thor? I am pretty sure U are talking about Hephaistos who is God of forging. The room with that big hammer thingy?
@@InjusticeHater It was rectified in Anniversary, but in the 1996 version it was Thor. Still, the location of St. Francis' Folly wasn't specified in the 1996 version, and being it a "folly" (which, if I remember properly, is a mix of different styles and, perhaps, cultural influences - I mean, it's a monastery dedicated to a catholic saint but it contains references to pagan deities) it could make sense to find Thor there too :p
@@CarloruggeroAnastasio oh alright thx for info, tbh I haven't been playing TR in ages and after anniversary came out completed that like 3* so my memory on that is way more fresh. ;--)
@@InjusticeHater you welcome. No prob, it's easy to get a little confused and especially with remakes!
,,Lara doesn't eat...she can make super jumps and she has infinite bullets.''-Are you kidding me?!It was a game released in 1996....
Ummm... Even before 1996 there were games where you could starve or have limited ammunition, as well as different types of jumping in games. It's not so much a technical limitation as it is a design choice.
Another theory about the sky....It could just be very cloudy!!
That's what I've always assumed. Sometimes the sky IS just white and there's nothing wrong with it. I also assumed that by the time Lara makes her way to the Lost Valley, it's already evening - hence why the sky is pitch black.
An explanation to this entire video: It was the 90's and video games were not as sophisticated as they are today.
I believe the mummy was inspired by the Chachapoya or Paracas mummies of Peru.
They were placed in this position to be wrapped under several beautiful layers of colorful and finely embroidered fabrics. This technique is called *Fardo*.
Inside, can be placed local herbs and plants, seeds, jewelry, statues or dolls representing family members as well as a mummified animal like a bird.
the sky actually technically does exist, but it just isn't there.
back in the first entry of tomb raider they were very limited, and if you removed the thick black sky that covered most of the game, you would see flat incomplete blocks with textures on them, so to hide it they added a very very thick black fog that would cover it.
that was a good trick :)
"Lara fell in a random cave and hit her face" AND SHE'S DREAMING EVERYTHING I like this explanation ahahahaha
Seriously though, why the lever texture INSIDE the rock column? I love that ahah
And the 2D mummy is fabulous, I literally started this game yesterday, and it's so much fun, even with all its limitations.
I think the theory towards the end is a little bit of reaching. She doesn't eat because it's a video game, she can jump super high because it's a video game, and she has infinite bullets only for her two signature pistols, all her other weapons require ammo.
The "wolves not dying of hunger" part seems more like something devs didn't care about back then, and the fact that it felt like they were trying to make the first cave feel like a closed-off ecosystem, hence the dinosaurs. Still a fun video.
Everyone knows this. You are ruining the fun.
Blimey these videos are now officially 10 years old! Can't believe its been that long. I was 14 back then. Memories 😢 thanks for making these videos. I am enjoying your self aware videos ❤ keep up the good work x
4:46 back then it was difficult to do the whole game and then to do heaven who was way too difficult 😄
No one going to talk about how there's thick layers of snow fluffy enough for wolves to leave footprints - inside a cave? You know. With a ceiling?
Damn you're right, maybe wolves placed the snow on purpose ? 🤯
wow, you really pay attention of weird details, but that was very interesting.
Wow, it's crazy how similarly your playstyle while showing off the game is so similar to the playstyle of the AI you made for your most recent video!
The reason why the Mummy faces the camera the whole time is because it is a billboarded sprite. It’s the same technique used on the Trees in Super Mario 64, the dead Nazis in Wolfenstein 3D, the some Demons in Doom, and other 32-bit games of it’s time. Even Gex: Enter The Gecko used billboarded sprites, but not as often since technology kept getting better.
that's a good trick
Even today; Zelda breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom use this technique for trees that are far away. (just an example I accidently kow of, there are probably many more)
My earliest memories are of Tomb Raider and Earth Siege 2.
I have vivid images in my mind of seeing that mummy, and asking why it was put there. Tomb Raider came out at a time where purely decorative features weren't all that common. Still to this day I am asking myself why it was put there, where it came from, what is purpose is, or what moved the developers to include it.
+Samael16661 The lever texture at the beginning is truly a mystery :D
+FoxMaster He was talking about that mummy :D. That texture is probably mistake from developers.
I have vivid memorys of my mom telling me to close my legs
1:50 I guess devs did it to reuse some game assets and make it look more like an actual pillar, instead of random rock. If you played Perfect Dark for N64, you would notice how much textures were reused on guns or walls. There's no need for such details, and back then the console's RAM was just very, low. Reusing textures was crucial to increase game's performance, lower RAM usage, make level load faster, and make game a bit smaller.
3:03 This is actually 2D sprite. PS1 was too underpowered to handle an actual and detailed 3D model of mummy.
3:35 You mean most scaled texture. PlayStation had only 2KB of texture cache and couldn't load huge textures. This is scaled up, or split into few parts and rendered on nearby polygons. And I guess they used that texture to give level it's mood
4:40 the level was designed not to take a place outside, so the game don't load skybox here. Sky would just use more memory and waste processing power. Or developers did that to resemble gray, cloudy, bright sky
4:45 - 5:05 devs probably didn't knew/noticed/realized that. And games weren't so reallistic back then. "Maybe Lara died aganist the wolves" this could make a nice game theory
Best representation of overthinking ever, but it's TR. Thank you
Wonderful video, but I would like to make a small clarification: at 4:45, when that hypothesis is made, in reality Lara eats, the food is included in the medipacks, which are a sort of survival kit, which also include the "k-ration "; about super jumps and infinite ammunition, well it's always a video game ... we could also ask ourselves who left modern ammunition and modern medikit in places abandoned by centuries ... it's just a video game....
I never thought much of the mummy. I just figured that it faces you all the time because it's a simple sprite and not a polygon creature. More lazy design than mystery but that was perfectly normal for the day. I need to check if the lever texture shows up on Saturn. Good point about the animals, though this game also features supernatural enemies so I guess it all adds up.
Also I would thank youtube's bot for the fail during the song identification, that song isn't "MESSIAH project-The Big Sky (Reprise)" by Kontor New Media , but the button to "report a problem with the bot" is removed since the google + rise up.
Thanks!
Cool fact, the mummy that watches you was crafted from an actual image. A few years back I got some books o Peru at the library, and I kid you not, in the book was an eact photo of the mummy in the game. I thought it was pretty cool.
those mummies 3:05 can be seen again at the shadow of tomb raider , same sitting stance but of course better dislayed at the Peruvian Tombs .
OOH! THIS was your video too! how awesome =D
Hehe :p
Only two people have ever noticed the tracks egg. You, amd "AI Lara" lol. For ten bonus points, have you looked really closely on the mesh for our raptor model? I think you'll get a kick out of that. Enjoy!
3:30 daaaaang i passed that leved without seeing that one :O i think the mommy is called "chullpa"
This show very well how you created the fake IA routine of your new videos :p
also noticed the lack of sky during my playthrough. funnily enough in the lost episodes of tomb raider 1 you do play partly outside with a visible sky (depicting lil stars n stuff)!
Cool extra level :D
I liked the white sky, it gave off very cold vibe
Omg it's amazing! I haven't noticed so many things!
other stuff in TR1 also keeps on looking at you like plants :D
3:31
The strange thing about that calendar is that it is not Incan, but Mayan. This means that the people of Vilcabamba were in contact with a civilization across the Darièn gap (AKA impenetrable jungle in Panama)
Just watched the AI video! question: since I notice you and her make similar comments in some places, is it because you "fed" this video to the AI?
It is actually true that grey wolves are not found in South America. The only species of wolf that is found in South America is the Maned wolf. Brown bears are not found in South America either. The only species of bear that is found in South America is the spectacled bear.
Could they be another species that look like wolves ? Idk the animals of the region
Please do a series on TR3. I love these videos you do a great job
Ty dude ^^ Maybe later, I don't know TR3 enough for that ^^
The footprints face the other way, because otherwise they would have to load another texture and memory is scarce.
4:55 HOLY SHIT THAT CAN BE TRUE
awesome man, it's my favorite game and i didn't think about all incoherent thing we can find in the game
I always did what you did for the time trial of level 1. I thought you were supposed to do it that way lol.
I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I couldn't couldn't get to the second secret in TR1, was looking online and couldn't find a thing, stumbled on to this gem by accident.
This is insane lol
#TeamTombRaider
3:59 this movement looks familiar
Great game. I try to retexture it so that graphic look really great. Almost finished Cave level.
epic, tell me when it's done :D
I see AI Lara trained enough to make the parcour jump of the door trial. And got enough information to call bullshit on the Mayan calender in an Inca temple. 🤣
The prints in the beginning are weird because of the limitations of the game engine. They are part of those big square snow-textures and therefore the possibilities to where to place those prints is very limited.
3:03 The mummy works like most items in the game. A flat texture that is allways coded to face in your direction.
You can get better examples by playing the original DOOM
04:44 I alway assumed it was ice and it acted as a sky light hence you're able to see what you're doing.. there a re a few dotted around the caves
Good idea :)
i never noticed this, but it just doesnt make sense that the ground is covered in snow.
Wonderful
I like this video! 💕
Thanks for posting! Will be watching the rest in this series. My all time favorite games are the OG Tomb Raiders. The reboots are okay, great even, but seems like a totally different story or thing with Tomb Raiders name slapped on it.
I only hope the newest planned game follows this taste but only with a little modern flavor.
Ty dude, these videos are old 😚
@@FoXMaSteR001 :) of course! Age doesn’t effect nicely made things! Remember that! I would love to see more of these types of videos. It’s truly an amazing series.
@@CabbagePatch8090 Ty dude 😍
Self-aware AI Lara seems to share the same doubts and same techs as in this video.
2:03.. Probably WAS a secret button-press block.. But what it opens died with the ones who built it. ;j
2:12 OOF
very interesting
5 guys created this game in the nineties. Do not expect answers for these programming limitations..
1:19 .. Things arent always what they appear to be. Sometimes even animals come from places people are blind to. Places they can go right back to, But have no ability anymore to speak about it. Im not kidding.
any idea how to get this running on the emulator used in the video?
5:00.. There were a LOT of places one could travel to, Before the titanic-floods and disasters borne from sheer judgement on countless people who'd gone wicked. That means formerly for animals, Too. Before they were cut-off from naturally going from what was formerly only a matter of 'Time' to go to place to place. This is about 'Atlantis' and the harm its rulers caused after all.. But most people dont care to understand 'Why' any of it is connected or what that means.
And the gist of it was that the world wasnt always 'Divided' by as much water as is presently everywhere.+
I really hope it is for fun! I mean , EVERY static object in TR1 '' stare '' at you if you rotate the camera. Also the lever texture was a mistake. And I really doubt that Lara is dreaming! They didn't have sky effects , because they didn't know how to do it!
What if Lara Croft never gone on this adventure and these events are just a dream
Mindblowing, and Winston is an angle :O
That's not the Maya calendar! that's called "Piedra Del Sol" and it's the Aztec calendar
I subscribed you like 5 years ago i don't remember why but TR facts are very interesting ! Thanks for that. ( Are you french ? Cuz I'm and i think that you were on my MSN friend list ! )
bel fr
3:40 .. Six-pointed star of the fallen-one depicted in their day, By a people who'd gone very-bad by then. Then one day the one they'd betrayed took them out of them picture one way or the other. So they did believe it would be the beginning of the end, But the fallen morning-star they believed in lied to them every step of the way in reality. To their demise.
You miss the another missing texture in the bridge room.
illuminati confirmed...
Vilcambamba can mean 'Sacred-Plain' or 'Plain Of The Spirits..' But guess what, Even some spirits can be bad. Malicious.. Undying.. Put two-and-two together. Theres a reason they loved bad-spirits they considered 'Sacred.'
First I was like naaah but then the mummy came and I was like hahaha.
whats with the negatives. just enjoy a classic. damn...
lol been playing tomb raider 1 for 20 years (it came out almost 20 years ago!!!) and never spotted that misplaced switch texture
+Mike Sully ((Likewise. Replay after replay after replay and there's something never noticed.
I think some things about Atlantis in First TR are truth.
Oh comeon man this is just a game,
The font is so small I can't read the info....
Hum about that dream theory and sky stuff well it was just a trick with the editor because their isn't any horizon object in TR1 so they just found a way to make a fake sky... and dinosaur also have dissapear... but their is some in the game 😂 so the bat and bears...
Where in the Game does this intro music Play?
It's Tomb Raider 1 on PS1, probably the egypt theme or greece, in the sphinx room I think
and those sawtooth? +b🙄👌✨
well this just turned into limbo :P 4:36
fox master a and you like tomb raider seems like my tipe of guy
You forgot to complain about that you have more then one life in the GAME, it should be only one life after that it would be disc error
the 3th secret " not easy to find"?? ya serious m8??
How to make a Russian subtitles for this video?
Wow I had forgotten just how bad playstation texture seams could be
3:12 I do this every time lol
am i too stupid or.. why can't i see anything special in the first fact? someone explain pls
This is a text book definition of over thinking. Especially a video game where all these things could be just graphical errors. Which they all are. I know it’s fun to believe games are real, and to get involved so deeply is what makes games fun. But this is just beyond immersion and falls into an over analyzation, finding meaning where there isn’t any.
You should rename this channel Gaming Sins
The creators of the game werent carefully :p
Lara can run out of breath, the sky could simply be cloud cover lol just poorly made, then again thats no excuse i'd say they just got lazy cause Doom was released for ps1 in 95 so yeah lol
