Our empathy is important because it affects how we treat others. If we stop caring about sentient and delight in the suffering of others, what is to stop us from wanting to cause suffering to humans, dogs, cats, whales, etc. If we find suffering funny, we won't refrain from causing suffering. We need to care if we are to be decent human beings and not horrendous sadistic garbage.
